Whelp looks like something I'll be excited to pick up in a few months on the cheap. Fingers crossed for summer sale.

Man I've never even tried an AC game but I am tempted. Mostly considered because of that limited AC5 bullshit, but now I'm watching videos and reading reviews and I think I might really like it.

Having not played this series since PS1, I am wondering if this is more like Starfox rather than a simulation? I really miss the Starfox series :(

Don't forget the Eurogamer review I wrote! That should balance out the IGN one.

Edit - whelp, there we go ha ha

Hey John, was it your first ever game review for Eurogamer? Nice review you got there! We have an expression in french for people who write beautifully. "Tu as une belle plume".

My biggest complaint is the severe lack of control options and not being able to adjust the difficulty once you've started the campaign. Both of these seem like pretty obvious oversights but I'm still enjoying it

Good writeup from Gamecentral:

https://metro.co.uk/2019/01/18/ace-combat-7-skies-unknown-review-flying-high-8357968/

sum up:

In Short: A successful return flight for the veteran franchise, with highly entertaining aerial action that remains accessible for new fans and old.

Pros: Excellent controls and combat, with plenty of options for both veterans and newbies. Fantastic graphics, promising multiplayer, and plenty of content. One of the best VR experiences ever.

Cons: There are still unavoidable problems with variety in mission design. The plot is both confusing and not very interesting. No squad commands and ungenerous checkpointing.

Score: 8/10

Hey.

You guys should like, buy this game so we won't have to wait another seven years for another Project Aces games.

These games have solid controls, fun arcade gameplay, amazing soundtracks, and engaging stories and characters.

This series is definitely one of the most underappreciated of all time.

Wow, pleasant surprise. Another game to add to my list of purchases.

I haven't played an ace combat game since the original PlayStation, if this is even still the same series.

I'm just chuffed right now. Hopefully they can patch X though to help our resolution and performance. But overall it looks like Pro was the lead console that got all the TLC. No surprise.

I'm glad the critics like it, people don't realize how close this game is to Soul Calibur territory when it comes to sequels. Especially now in the HD and online era.

I did read it earlier, you should continue writing reviews too, probably in combination with the graphics as this time. I think it worked great.

I also saw that you were an American living in Germany. For some reason I always pictured you as a pure brit living in GB, but when actually connecting the parts I listened a bit closer and there is indeed an American dialect there.

Haben sie in Deutschland deutsch gelernt? Ich kan nur ein bisschen deutch sprechen, aber ich habe französisch in die schule gelernt, nicht deutsch. So ist est villeicht nitch überraschend. (sorry all real germans for mangeling your language!)

i'm very happy with these scores. Ace Combat is one of those franchises from the PS1 era that I still love. It is so good to see a good resident evil and a good ace combat in the same year <3

Great reviews, but still waiting on the PC reviews. Hopefully it runs well on my gaming laptop but not sure if it'll have problems. The fact that it looks gorgeous has me concerns that my new machine may be underpowered for playing it there. But MAN! I wanna play AC7 even if i've never played an Ace Combat before.

Those are some solid scores.

Will pick this up, I cannot now though as I have too much of a backlog.

Interestingly enough, AC7 still does
Reading the full review they do elaborate

there's a heaping helping of exposition in every mission briefing, which you can also skip but shouldn't because that's where your objectives are explained. There's also a steady stream of inane commentary from your squadmates and mission commands during each level, and you need to pay attention to that dialogue because it sometimes provides context that will help you understand your mission.

Ace Combat 7 expects you to understand what's going on at all times but rarely tells you what it wants.

And you need all the help you can get on that score, because even though Ace Combat 7 expects you to understand what's going on at all times it rarely tells you what it wants from you.

The descriptions of mission objectives are often defined broadly — protect an ally, take down the enemy bombers, etc. — but often come with specific time limits or procedural constraints that aren't made clear, so you only find out about them when they cause you to suddenly fail the mission. You can eventually master missions through repetition, learning where enemies come from and honing your response, but that kind of trial and error grinds the flow of most missions to a halt.

You also aren't always given enough information to properly track your objectives. In one mission where you and your squad must protect a group of fellow pilots you are constantly fed chatter about how different protectees need help, but nothing to tell which pilot, specifically, is calling for help at a given moment save for a temporary blue outline that can only be seen if the pilot is already directly in front of you. Despite each fighter having a character name, the jets are all marked "ally" on your HUD and radar. It adds an element of randomness that the mission does not allow for, since a single downed ally forces you to start over.

It doesn't help that many of the missions divide your attention across its wide levels. Demanding you take care of multiple problems at once, it oftens seem as if your missions were designed for a squad of capable pilots working together, but there's no co-op option. Instead, you are saddled with inept AI teammates who cannot pull their own weight. I technically saw one of them take down an enemy, so it isn't as if they are completely inert, but they'll never advance an objective or take down a bogey on your tail.

The reviewer at IGN probably didn't even use their brain when playing. There is nothing unclear about objectives in the entire game.

Wrote the same in my review, for first timers it is a really hard game. People familiar with Ace Combat won't have any issues at all but I can imagine that many gamers will curse with the learning curve and absent of any explanation.

I'm a first time player (and have to write a review) and got to mission 6 or 7 without too much trouble. Does it get that much harder later on ?

This is an unfortunate take.
The vast majority of the IGN complaints were related to the story. There was just the one paragraph where they - rightly - criticized the lack of a training mode or any effort to fully explain the mechanics.

I'm with you. All the people knocking the IGN review seem to be missing key points of the reviewer's arguments. Like with mission objectives being vague, the reviewer mentioned that objectives were contained in cutscenes and briefings, indicating that they at least paid attention to some of those and still had issues following what to do. The main point of mentioning that objectives were mentioned in cutscenes and briefings was that the story wasn't well-implemented, and you have to get your objectives through the story. Not to mention the entire paragraph spent detailing why one of the escort missions was unclear.

I'll grant that the reviewer's comment about having to listen for updates on objectives during missions comes off as something an impatient person would say, but again, that overlooks that comment they made about your wingmen also providing a steady stream of banter. If that much banter happens during the action as opposed to the slower points, that is an issue. If the review does have one failing, it's that the reviewer doesn't explicitly state when all that banter occurs.

The repeated attacking of the IGN review in this thread is embarrassing.

The reviewer at IGN probably didn't even use their brain when playing. There is nothing unclear about objectives in the entire game.

They were not the only review to complain the game is unclear about exactly what it wants you to do and how to do it.
