I want to hold out until Black Friday or until the 3950X drops so that I can get some sort of discount on these processors and mobos. (Another Ebay 15% off? Yes, please!)
Hopefully the AIB boards are ready by then.

Is there any reason to upgrade from i5 6600K to Ryzen 7 3700x for video games? Plan is to go pretty high-end and pair it with an RTX 2080 Super.
a 4c/4t cpu vs a 8c/16t cpu? what do you think?

the 3700X is holding up against the 8700K/9900K and all the while using less power and running cooler. if you are getting a 2080 Super then you're probably wanting to play at 1440p or 4K where games will be more GPU bound than CPU.

also more and more games will make use of more cores so 4/4 is just not good enough any more for high-end.

Won't be able to build a new rig till later this year but I'll likely go with the 3700x. The value to performance ratio for it is insane.

Prices for x570 boards should also be a bit down by then too.

if you can wait until later in the year you might as well wait for B550 boards unless you need X570

Dang, those are some nice chips. Gonna be holding to see Intel's response, but for right now it's tempting to pull some triggers. I never really expected to see AMD running cooler than Intel, my old FX PC pulled double duty as a space heater in the winter.

I'm excited. Even though the 3900x doesn't beat my 9900k in pure gaming, by the time I'm ready to upgrade, AMD will probably have surpassed Intel. with the 4000 or 5000 series.

I remember my first proper pc after my hand me down 386 and 486, it was an AMD Duron that was pretty much a joke in comparison to Intel's offering at the time. I vowed never to go the AMD route again! For the most part... I stayed away Pentuim 3, Intel Dual Core and the first one I ever built.. an i5 2500k for the last few years..
Time to jump on the AMD train.

The Duron was an excellent budget CPU.

Any opinions on this...Currently running an AMD 390 with an ageing i5 4670k CPU & 16GB of DDR3 RAM.

Thinking about getting a Ryzen 3600 (would love to go for a 3700x but need to watch costs) and perhaps pairing with a 2060 Super (the 5700 runs a bit hot from what I have read but maybe I should wait for non reference coolers).

Any reviews that have a comparison dropping these new CPUs into the B350/X370 Motherboards? I've seen a few with the 400, with less around 1% differences. 3700x drop in replacing my 1800x looks real tantalizing.

I wonder if we'll get those rumored(leaked?) Intel price cuts now lol. Even the piddly 10% cuts would make them much more appealing but Intel seemed to enjoy being the "premium" alternative vs the 2000 series and the 3000 still hasnt snatched the crown.

So it'll be €355 for the 3700X and €430 for the 3800X in Finland. The difference between these two really doesn't seem like worth the €75 premium (about $85 in US bucks). Looks like 3700X is the way to go.

Go for it IMO. 3600 looks like a winner to me(in terms of value) and it'll be a huge upgrade over the 4670k for modern games.

So if I'm using a B350M motherboard with my current Ryzen 5 2400g, can I just buy one of these new CPUs and slap it in? I really CBA buying a new motherboard as well right now!

I'd save a little more money, delay the purchase a month or two to get the 3700x. A true 8 core processor will be beneficial with next Gen consoles also having 8 core Ryzen processors. Plus, more cores are always helpful if you do any streaming, video editing /encoding, etc. You can also save a little money ordering from a store that is tax free like Newegg (unless you are in CA + a few more states).

The zen architecture doesnt allow that.

Right but it leads me to believe that intel doesn't see it as a threat to their K skus at least and won't be price dropping them, at least by much anytime soon. Pure speculation at least on my end. At least if I were intel, I wouldn't see a reason to.

Thanks both, will continue to have a think about what to do!

Current setup:

R5 2600 @ 4.15ghz
Asus Strix B350-i gaming board
16gb 3200 CL14
GTX 1080ti

Was looking to upgrade to 3600 or 3600x, however 3700x has thrown a spanner in the works. I will almost exclusively game on it.

Is it worth spending £100 on 3700x?

I also understand that x570 offers no real performance boost other than PCI 4.0, however is it worth upgrading ram to 3600 CL16?

Thanks

When will these start appearing in prebuilts? Spare me the criticism of deciding to not build. Just curious on the timeline

I love how Digital Foundry tests their games at 1440p, but uploads the gameplay footage that looks more like 360p.

I still love you guys.

No shame in going prebuilt if that's what you want to do! As far as when they'll be available in them I imagine it won't be long realistically. I'd say give it a month or so, maybe a bit more? Assuming amd's supply is sufficient.

Intel already preemptively cut their prices.

Thanks. I'm just tired of the two paragraph long lecture before the "idk" to the question I was actually asking. This forum is actually pretty nice but I just wanted to be clear

No I get it, people can get really high and mighty when it comes to building your own system sometimes. I've built a few now and I still consider buying a prebuilt from time to time. Especially when you see how good the quality can be. Derbaur has a prebuilt with a custom water loop you can buy and it looks phenomenal.

It was alright for the most part(not game related) , at the time my parents bought it pre-built from a store.. and it struggled to run most games decently though, maybe it was the Rage 128 Pro's fault though...
It's crazy only like 3 years ago AMD was still offering their godawful Bulldozer series. What a change since then
Yes. and to think in 2013 the best they could offer next gen consoles were those Jaguar cpu's..
Exciting times!

It's not just that. You can get an ACE deal at Alienware if you're patient enough.

I wonder how the 3800X looks because I only see reviews for the other ones and the 3800X has higher clocks.

Could someone let me know what kind of performance difference the 5700XT brings over a RX480?

Not home so it's hard for me to see all the new info coming out.
