I really hate how much the 8bitdo controllers are getting equal time on image and video porn as the Super NT when those controllers are basically shit compared the the FPGA consoles. They aren't good.

I dunno about shit, but the dpad is too sensitive on diagonals still. I was hoping they'd have improved them.

I ordered an SN30 anyway because I'm gonna play a lot of RPGs on the SuperNT and I don't care too much for those, and I was hoping they had improved the d-pad.

Synced my SN30 up to my NES Retro receiver and played on the NT mini a bit. Especially hit my controller torture test, Contra. Diagonals feel a tiny bit less sensitive than the NES30 - good, because the fiddly diagonals on the 8bitdos are the worst on Contra. Overall it's like 90% the same as the NES30, any difference could be my imagination, or just the different design of the SNES-style dpad vs the NES style one.

Basically what happens is to get straight up or straight down you have to be very precise - you get an up or down diagonal too often when you should get just up or down.

Maybe I'll try the electrical tape mod on it, it's supposed to help with the over-sensitive diagonals.

I'm always surprised all most of the reviewers that review the 8bitdo pads don't notice it, even the My Life in Gaming guys didn't seem to notice it. It's pretty obvious.

I use the RetroUSB wireless controllers on the NES now instead of my 8bitdo NES30 - the microswitches in the RetroUSB one make for a too-clicky dpad, but at least it is accurate.

Why does it seem like such a mystery to be able to make a good, cross-shaped, d-pad? Even Nintendo can't do it these days.

What colour did you get and is text printed or a sticker?

I've had the SN30 for a few years now, I consider it to be equal to the original SNES pads. Until the Xeno pro controller, it was the only way i could play tetris on the switch accurately.

Looks like PC Mag UK broke the embargo

Is this the first image of the bottom that we've seen.

Just got my clear controller yesterday.
At the end of the day, I'm going to be more focused on what's on the screen than what's playing the game and what's in my hand, but, yeah, shoulda stuck with the black one that I had originally ordered...

Got my SFC style controllers in yesterday and tried them out on my RGB Modded SFC Jr, they seem to work just fine to me. Not sure what the people ITT saying they're bad are talking about. Did some intense rounds SF2T and they took in all my commands properly.

The answer may be that they vary in quality, and that some work better than others.

Try something like Contra that requires a lot of diagonal inputs (shooting down and up forward, or straight down to duck). You'll get a lot of down-forward instead of ducking which gets you killed. Or a shmup, you'll find yourself skating diagonally a bit more than you intend to. If you do a lot of jumping straight up in SF2 you might notice it there also when you end up jumping diagonally instead.

It's very decent overall, I've certainly used worse. But flip back and forth between that and a real SNES controller (or a SNES classic controller) and you'll probably be able to notice the difference on anything diagonal heavy.

I suck at Contra enough, I don't need any more help at sucking.

See here on why they respond a bit different:

https://www.resetera.com/threads/8bitdo-sf30-sn30-pro-controller.1742/page-2

Post 70 has a pic of the PCB underneath showing how it is different / why it responds differently. Why they didn't more closely clone the original I don't understand. Before the 8bitdo forums were shut down there was a very long thread on this, so it's not like it wasn't brought to their attention.

Ordered an SD2SNES to prepare for this thing. Was thinking about ordering one of those "box of random Super Famicon games" listings that pop up on ebay. Hope a decent one comes up.

Man, after all this dpad talk I'm really on the fence about getting an 8bitdo. Any chance someone could throw up some pics of the new series pcb?

I have absolutely no problem with my 8bitdo controllers. I think they feel great.

::shrug::

They aren't even in the ballpark compared to just pairing up a Wii U Pro controller with the 8bitdo receiver but people have a fetish for the original shape and look of SNES/SFC controlllers.

Don't fall for the hype.

I wouldn't want to play SNES games with a Wii U controller. Mix of nostalgia as well as just me preferring the simplified SNES layout for older games as I'm using all of the controller instead of just parts of it.

Was testing my (old bluetooth) 8bitdo controller yesterday with Higan on PC and I immediately felt the difference between an original controller and the 8bitdo. It's way more "stiff" for lack of a better word. You don't feel differences on some games but Contra Spirits was bad and SMW felt different too with it. I played a lot with the SNES Mini lately so I am used to that controller now.

Well, I bought the 8bitdo for emulation on PC some time ago. Glad I didn't order another one for my Super NT. I think I am better off buying original used ones if I ever need more.

I noticed the difference in stiffness of the d-pad vs. my original SNES controller but I thought it was simply because it was a new controller. My SNES controller at the time was more than twenty years old and I just assumed it felt more loose/mushy due to it being old.

I honestly don't remember how original SNES controllers felt out of the box. I was too young back then.

I never used an SNES mini so I don't know how those controllers feel.

Edit: I'm now wondering if there's a difference in the d-pads of the three different SNES 8bitdo controllers. I have the older model that's in the same style as the official SNES controller and I've honestly never had any problems using the d-pad in input heavy games like Street Fighter.

Anyone received the black version of the 8bitdo controller? I would like to know if the text is printed directly on the plastic or on a sticker. Thanks!

Saw a random youtube video on the new controllers. Not gonna lie:

ZFOtt6X.jpg

I think that looks like absolute shit. He also said the giant face sticker wasn't on there perfectly, and one of his two controllers came completely DOA. Still loves it overall, but man. That clear looks like trash.
I had a feeling the clear was going to turn out that way. I can't think of when I've ever seen clear plastic with a matte texture that had as clean a transparency as those target renders. Truly clear controllers like the SN ProPad and the MakoPad 64 had glossy finishes. Tripped that 'too good to be true' alarm right away.

I held off on ordering on the off-chance that they actually pulled it off, but now that it's clear (heh) they didn't, I just put in an order for a black controller.

Yeah I just got my SFC 8bitdo controller today, but I'm not interested in posting anything until I get the matching system. I live in Seattle so I'm hoping they're shipping them from here and I only have to wait a day or so for it to arrive.

I don't think the transparent SNT can ever look appealing (to me at least), no matter how much people try to make it look sexy. I also don't like LED modding consoles (or any electronic device) anymore. I thought it was cool back in the day, think it looks really tacky nowadays (I am aware that this model isn't LED modded). The matte finish is what kills the transparent design for me here. Controllers look atrocious.

Remember many people modded their original Limited Edition Crystal XBox back in the day.

Same, though I might as well add that the Black doesn't look good to me either. I like both the classic models, though.

Yeah I had to choose the black one because the SuFami color wasn't available anymore, unfortunately. And I don't like the US colors. Black looks really boring but I am okay with it.

I picked up the black one to play it safe. The Super Famicom colours are my favourite but light coloured plastics are prone to yellowing.

Got my black controller, looks spiffy.

BUT

I was excited to mod it up a little with some different colored buttons to give it a bit of contrast, and lo and behold, the screws are some irregular little security hexwrench bullshit instead of the regular Philips head screws 8bitdo and regular SNES controllers always used to this point. So now I have to find out what I need to open the damn thing and order one of those. ARGH

Yeah, I just looked at mine and they take a torx driver. It's worthwhile to own some torx drivers since they are fairly common for electronics usage. XB1/360 controllers use them as well. Companies like to use them since it'll stop your average owner from voiding their warranties. On the plus side they are far harder to strip out than Phillips screws which makes them superior in my opinion.

I have a Super Famicom that I use my two SF30 on and I've noticed no issues with my games. I also use them with my AVS and they work great with that. I love both of those controllers and just picked up a SF30 Pro. I haven't gotten a chance to mess with the newer 2.4ghz controllers.

So did anyone ever get an answer as to why it costs 40 dollars to ship this thing UPS ground to within the US?

I did an estimate of shipping from my house to Las Vegas, via UPS Ground, and it came out to be $30.12. That was using some guesses on package size and weight, and declared value of $200. Honestly, I would think it was within their margins to eat the cost of shipping, or at least make it $9.99 for shipping within the US.

at least you're not going to pay 70€ for custom fees on top of the 52USD I payed for shipping like I will...

So I'm still confused. The Turrican games are coming with the system, but where exactly are they stored? Like in the firmware itself, or does it come with an SD card?

Also, does this mean that loading roms is something that could potentially work out of the box and they just haven't talked about it? Or is this something that Kevtris will have to make a custom firmware to enable?

Although DHL is hella expensive, they are always rediculously fast and i've never enocountered duties (fingers crossed) in the past. Amazon Japan uses DHL to ship to Canada and I get my package in 1-2 business days; It's insane. Whenever I order from the US it takes minimum 1 week whether it's UPS, FedEx or good ol' Post.

Not saying I personally liked paying $43 shipping, but it is what it is. Hopefully they can eat some of the cost or find better shipping contracts for future products.

There's no included SD card and I'm fairly certain rom loading off SD card won't work out of the box. If rom loading happens it will likely require a custom/unofficial firmware.
