Anybody else just worn down over trying to get a PS5?

I've been on the hunt for a PS5 since launch (Couldn't get a pre-order, shocker), and while I expected the first few months to be hard to get one, I didn't imagine it would be this demoralizing and draining. Obviously the pandemic, supply shortages and the like have contributed in making the difficulty of getting PS5 only rivaled by finding a Wii around it's launch, but almost 6 months on and I'm just worn down trying to find one... even more than I was trying to find a Wii back then. I check numerous times a day, always sold out. The 1 time I actually saw one available for purchase, it was sold out literally in a minute. I'm also almost to the point of just stopping trying to find one in-store too, since my local stores say they almost never get any unless it's already sold for in-store pickup.

I know I'm not the only one having an exceptionally hard time finding one, but is anyone else in this situation just worn out over looking day after day for one?

I've stopped looking and won't start until the first big PS5 exclusive. Everything I need immediately is crossplay on PS4.

I am not even dying to have one as PS is always my secondary console...but the weekly disappointment I feel is almost to the end for me. I understand all the supply issues, but I think ultimately this will be the end of the 2-3 console house for me. maybe in a couple years I will grab the Pro version or something.

At least I got lucky and got a Series X, so I'm not left behind completely.

Yes and no. I do want a PS5, but at the same time don't really care to own one until it has a worthy library of truly next gen games. It would be cool to play PS4 games with improvements, but that's not why I want a PS5. Also, my PS4 Pro is treating me just fine at the moment.

What I'm already stressing about is trying to get a Switch Pro (or whatever it's gonna be called) when it releases.

I'd just stick to following people on Twitter for announcements of available stock and not try to visit individual storefronts in hopes of getting lucky. Then if there's a time window of availability try the mobile apps instead of trying to use standard browsers when checking out.

If it makes you feel any better, while I lucked out and got a PS5 at launch, 99% of what I'm playing are PS4 games. Apart from having a new machine/box/toy, you're not really missing out on much by not owning a PS5 at this moment in time.

I tried to get one from GAME this morning and Smyths a couple of hours ago, but their websites are so shit that it's impossible. GAME is particularly annoying because bundles that are out of stock can still be added to your basket. So you add one, try to checkout, are told it's out of stock and when you try to add a different product it slaps a cooldown on you for trying to add too much stuff to your basket! There has to be a better way.

I wouldn't really care but my PS4 Pro is on it's last legs and has already been repaired once. I can't play without it shutting down through overheating so I just want a PS5 to replace it. First time ever where I want a new console just to play old games.

Look at the bright side. There are hardly any games on it right now anyway (mine isn't getting used at least), and what few games are available now will be dirt cheap by the time you get one.

You need to get connected to stock notifications, be logged in and following things on a website where people are discussing it, etc. I get that it doesn't feel like it should be necessary, but it is, because that's what the people who are successfully buying them are doing.

As an example I've set up my stuff so that I get a text to my phone every time one pops in stock on any of the sites that nowinstock.net is tracking. (I'm in the US). Using that and with preorders I've bought half a dozen of them at this point for family and friends.

If you're an avid PS4 gamer, it's about the most no-brainer upgrade ever. And because PS5s are so hard to find, used PS4s are selling for top dollar. I sold my LE Death Stranding PS4 Pro for the same price I paid for it on eBay once I got my PS5.

I guess I'm saying, keep fighting for it, it's worth it, and see how you can improve your chances.

I caved in a month ago and bought one from a scalper. The markup wasn't a lot, and it was absolutely worth being able to not stress over trying to get one.

To be sure, I'm not condoning scalping, and you should do what makes sense for your situation. But I don't regret doing it.

I got one on the launch date through Playstation Direct, but I have been trying to get my brother one ever since and it's been MADDENING.

Not really, other than Demon's Souls there's not really anything I want to play on the PS5. Maybe I'll even wait for a hardware revision that fixes (hopefully) the rattling fans and rampant coil whine. The current offering seems like a rushed beta product to me.

I didn't buy a PS3 before the Slim (Uncharted 2 bundle) and the PS4 I didn't get until a year or more after launch. I generally don't feel a rush to buy new consoles. Better to let them mature a bit and iron out the various issues and shortcomings (Why does the PS5 still spin up the disc every so often?).

Last time I bought a newly released console I ended up with the terrible PS4 Pro that sounds like a jet engine. So excuse me if I'm wary picking up a PS5 with a 59 page thread here about coil whine and fan noise - with multiple people managing to get replacements and ending up with PS5s that are no better than the ones they replaced.

An RTX 3080 + Ryzen 5900X on the other hand, I want those badly and there's absolutely nothing available here. First time I remember simply not being able to build a nice €2500 PC :(

I haven't really bothered trying since I figured I'd probably wait til at least summer before getting one, but the outlook of getting one even then seems grim. What with some problems I've been hearing about and whatnot I might just skip it and wait for the Pro version if they plan on making one. Go with bundles if you have the chance (or remaining credit limit). Bots don't usually go after those and you can return what you don't want. That's how I got my PS5.

Unfortunately for us, scalpers are still cleaning new stock it seems. Argos finally had the PlayStation 5 page up around 6am this morning but none were in stock, the basket button was in the green too but sold out in every location.

I mean, with Returnal at the end of April and then Ratchet: Rift Apart and FFVII: Intergrade in June people are going to be saying "Yeah I am ready to get a PS5 now" very soon and the extreme shortage will still be there. If anything it is just going to make the demand even worse as we go into those months

I'd love to get one for Souls and D2 with my clanmates but I've got a PS4 to tide me over until scalpers aren't the only reliable way to get one. I keep missing updates for restocks due to work and/or just being away from my computer and phone, so I've almost given up on getting one in the next few months. Ratchet coming out will probably reignite the want though. Returnal also looks great.

It's super tough. In case you're not already doing these:

Follow Twitter accounts that specifically focus on PS5 stock alerts. Not wario64, not cheap ass gamer, but specifically ps5 stock alerts. There are a few accounts out there.

Try using the store app instead of a web based browser. Sometimes the app is easier/faster.

Keep in mind that stocks can come in waves. Even if it sells out in a minute, keep refreshing because additional stocks can always appear.

I mean, it's not even that there are more than 2 PS5 games that i want to buy now, but weirdly enough still want it (will be big upgrade over my slim PS4 for older games).
This year retailers in my country don't sell consoles online. They keep the consoles for people with connections (friends of chiefs) and some unfulfilled orders from last year. It's super frustrating when i know this month there has been two restocks here.

btw only Series S is super easy to find here (i guess demand for quite weaker next-gen machine is low). Series X and PS5 noope.

Fair point I suppose, but the strategy I mentioned is possible to do in a lot of countries. Not sure where OP is, but you can do this stuff in the UK, Japan, Italy, Spain, Canada, US... if we had more information on where we might be able to help.

Anywhere they sell them online strategies for tracking websites can be done.

I really can't imagine myself walking into a store and finding a PS5 just there for the next year or so.

I gave up as soon as I got my RTX 3080. It just felt like it would be wrong to own both when so many people are struggling to own a single one =P I'll wait until stock levels are sensible again, and by then there should be a lot of exclusives. My PS4 is fine until then, and it looks like cross-gen is going to stick around longer than planned. I have no doubt Covid means God of War is definitely cross gen now.

Good luck with the hunt OP! I know the pain of checking stores daily. I signed up to two different Twitter bot checking accounts that auto-tweeted with links whenever UK stock appeared, and that was how I eventually got my 3080. Make sure you've got the instant notifications turned on for the accounts you follow, and then it's just a case of being lucky enough to be by your phone when it happens.

Honestly if you are looking since launch, you didn't try hard enough. Me and my friend (Both 38, so its not like we have the physical capacity to do this kind of thing anymore) stayed up for 40 hours trying to secure our PS5 during launch and we did it. Try harder and you might get one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess I've been lucky. A few hours worth of looking and using tracking sites that send alerts stock levels have yielded me with five opportunities to preorder or buy a PS5 since October. I did so twice (once for me, and once for a friend) with minimal issues at check-out. The two I bought were from amazon.ca and bestbuy.ca.

Similarly, I spent a good 30 minutes using the same tracking sites to land a Series X last week without any hassles and minimal reloading.

I feel terrible about it, but I decided I was interested in picking one up yesterday and happened to get a digital bundle from GameStop later in the day. I don't mean to say this to brag, as I understand the frustration as I've unsuccessfully tried to buy PC parts for me and my SO since last fall and have had multiple orders cancelled. Yeah. At launch when we were facing down interminable months left of lockdown I wanted one to enjoy my PS4 library at the best performance/resolution while stuck at home. Now that the weather is getting better and vaccination is in sight I'm just not interested- for now I just want to stick with my PS4 and use the $500 I set aside to support local restaurants and bars when it's safe.
