These measures all feel about two weeks too late and too toothless to actually work.

The schools remaining open is the most baffling half-measure, to be honest.

Not for long though. Scott Morrison won't be able to sustain this narrative if number of cases continue to grow at the current rate.
I gotta give it to the government though, the announced stimulus packages until now actually surprised me and with some luck we might get out of this barely alive but strong enough to recover faster than other affected countries.

I can see why they held off for so long, the economic impact is going to be massive but I can't help but feel that they should have gone harder earlier

Also, can't believe those fuckwits going to Bondi and being out on the weekend. How can they be that dense?

I won't be surprised if all non essential businesses are closed by Wednesday.

I live and work in the NT, and the Premier annoucing yesterday the de facto closure of our borders was the worst case scenario for the community I'm part of. By the end of this fortnight, we'll have to let go of hundreds of people :/
Very conflicted about it, and guess it's a pure case of "damned if you do, damned if you don't"

My colleagues and I are absolutely seething right now. As a school teacher, ScoMo and his band of merry fuckwits in the Liberal party are playing with our lives. He talks about social distancing and not letting your kid mingle with others if you keep them away from school cause that would be irresponsible...what do you think happens in schools? We're exposed to potentially hundreds of kids/Parents daily. I'm just absolutely shocked this moron continues to give the teaching profession, along with parents, the big middle finger.

One big positive thing that Australia has done - in comparison to other western countries - is test a shit tonne of people very early.

As a result, unlike other countries who were slack, we've been able to track down people who may have come into contact with infected people much much sooner.

There has been a lot of cock-ups, but our early testing is one thing we should be proud of.

I work in a school, as does my wife and my kids are in child care. I'd love to be able to rip the kids out of CC and look after them at home, but we'll be penalised for doing so. My wifes workplace has said anybody staying home without an illness will be placed on leave without pay.

So we're feeling pretty exposed to danger.

I have so many friends who are now completely out of work and laid off, they are already trying to move back with parents or trying to find ways to survive cause there is no way in hell they can get by with how awful Centerlink is and the current cost of living.

Right there with you mate. My wife is working at home luckily but now I have to worry about bringing it home to her when she's in a high risk category. It's unbelievable.

Restaurant I work at is closing from tomorrow. Going in in the morning to pack the place down and then I have 2 weeks annual leave and no shifts for potentially months.

Glad Animal Crossing just released at least, perfect game for this time...

The conference that happened a little while ago with the PM clarifying what stays open and what closes was such a disaster. This is the worst half measure ever. This will not contain the virus. We are in for terrible times here I'm afraid.

i work in the ACT for a large government department and uh, I.T. isn't great. not sure how it'll cope with so many people working from home. my flight to adelaide (where i'm originally from) is in 3 weeks but i'm assuming it'll just get cancelled.

I feel we are not doing enough now to stop the tsunami of covid-19 cases that are about to swamp our health system. People are just taking the piss too.

Adelaide has 100 cases, a cluster of US tourists yesterday, interstate arrivals recently, before that no community transmission reported. Community transmission has probably started.

We lock our land borders Tuesday, this includes Sydney and Melbourne. There is some lockdown policy. In two weeks we will know where it's at.

We're all about the drive through clinics.

Hope the response will be adequate to suppress.

Down in Tassie, I'm utterly frustrated with their testing processes here. We keep claiming there's no community transmission, but Public Health is only testing people coming in from overseas or if you've been close to a known case, so...we're not -testing- for community transmission.

The hospital has different test referral criteria than public health, so even if they want you tested Public Health can tell them no.

Fortunately, UTAS moved to full online delivery (in a move that honestly surprised me) so I'm able to study from home where I'm self-isolating, because immunocompromised.

Melbourne, Australia
i've barely left my house in the last ten days but have to go into the city (melbourne) tomorrow to go into the office. it's going to be interesting to see what they say in regards to the state wide shut down. i'm not *too* worried about my job or anything (i work in utlities so in the short term i think we're going to be okay) but this whole thing is so weird and scary and the just embarrassing way the government is handling it is not helping

Dude, I'm with you. I just found out tonight that a parent of one of my students has tested positive. I've seen this kid multiple times over the past couple of weeks. I'm just assuming that I have it at this point. I'm just hoping that I haven't passed it along to my own parents. But hey! Apparently kids don't spread the virus! Scomo and his mates said so. His magical Sky Wizard probably told him so. Best of luck to you for the rest of the term. I've made the decision that I'm not going in this week. Luckily I'm in Victoria and our Premier has just gone it alone and schools are shutting Tuesday.

My brother who works in a uni cafe has had his last shift so now hes jobless. As for the rest of us its going to be interesting to see what happens considering we work in the meat industry and production has only ramped up due to the panic buying

Wishing you all the best mate. We've recently moved to QLD and all my family are back in NSW so it doesn't look like I'll be seeing them for a while (probably a good thing given my mother's health). There's no way I won't have this thing by the school holidays in 2 weeks. Apparently our teacher's union are having an emergency meeting tomorrow, I hope they give ScoMo the bird and say we're all walking. We literally have a third of the teaching staff at our school that would be considered high risk, yet they are exposed to incredible numbers of people. That's before we get into the total lack of social distancing measures (not possible in our crowded classrooms) or poor hygiene standards (not enough soap for a start).

All Australia has going for it is that the population density is much more spread out than other countries. That's the only reason we haven't been hit hard

It'll be interesting to see. I've just agreed with Mrs Squirrel that we're pulling our kids out from Tuesday.

This shits fucked. Im in an ok position as I can work from home the entire time. But my partner is a casual teacher who has been working every day. We had to pull the plug on that due to a health condition that I have that puts me at risk. So no more work for her so we have to live with, pay rent and bills off my wage and eat into our savings. Wont be eligible for any of the stimulus packages either. So yay I guess.

Really love being on the fringes of the lower middle class, where I'll get absolutely not a red cent out of the stimulus package, can't even drawdown on my dwindling super. If I lose my job tomorrow I'm basically fucked.

Good thread.

First, absolute solidarity with every worker in hospitality, tourism and the arts. I cannot imagine what it must be like for the tens (hundreds?) of thousands of people who will be effectively unemployed from midday today.

The messaging from the Commonwealth v The States has been incredibly confusing. I'm based in Canberra, and it came out yesterday that all 'non-essential' services were closing. What did that even mean? Im in the public service - do I I go to work? The press conference and interviews by Morrison last night only blurred the communication.

I could go on I suppose, but more importantly - I hope everyone is doing okay.

Should have shut the borders ages ago
Should have enacted a strict lockdown in Feb or the start of March.

I'm scared of what the future may be.

I truly feel like Australia is not doing enough. The mixed messaging from state and federal governments is not helping things.

QLD Government still wants everyone to go outside into a crowd and vote at the upcoming elections...How that has not been postponed yet is beyond belief.

NSW schools remaining open is the most brain dead shit ever. Not to mention how lax these restrictions are. Like hairdressers and beauty salons still being open is fucking mind numbing.

An announcement from Gladys is expected today to close all NSW schools by this week and extend Easter Holidays by a week.
