i could feel my blood pressure rise just from reading thatI remember driving around a white lady who I was helping out at the time.
We ended up passing by these rural southern homes off this road. She was amazed and marveled at the houses and design.
She said " Wow, look at these beautiful houses. Incredible... I wonder what these people used to do to have a house like that...."
I took a look and told her "it's a plantation home... They used to own slaves..."
The lady got a little quiet and said "Ya know, you will go alot farther in life if you aren't so negative all the time......"
Moral of the story? White people are fragile as fuck when it comes to the truth and reality of history.
You might as well have a wedding at a concentration camp. Sorry if anyone finds that hyperbolic.
Nope.
"Because of the world we live in now, it's all about race and everyone wants to put everyone in a different category," she said. "I think it's a shame because everyone's so accepting, and social media is dividing people because people get so offended by everything."
They'll be arguing how the March on Washington has been twisted into a race issue next.
Ok, this got a good chuckle out of me.
Economy anxiety.
If concentration camps were pretty, white people would absolutely be all over that shit. You might as well have a wedding at a concentration camp. Sorry if anyone finds that hyperbolic.
Nope.
I am losing brain cells reading this"Because of the world we live in now, it's all about race and everyone wants to put everyone in a different category," she said. I mean you can find nice ranch/smaller farm venues that have a modern rustic feel and look great with your photos of mason jar holding the flowers. Chances are they're the same price or cheaper than these plantation venues. I think those being an option pretty much says it all.I'm pretty sure if you show these people two equally pretty houses: one with a history of slavery and one without they'd still choose the one with the slavery. History they say.
"I've always dreamed of getting married at Boone Hall, just because of the location and the history
If that's the case with that property (I am not disputing you... I just don't know a better way of saying this), then good. I wish them success. I hope their guests walk away as better people. If I am in Savannah, I will add it to my list, if for no more reason than to donate.I mean, the good versions of these are exactly like this. For example this year I visited Savannah and the Owens-Thomas House and Slave Quarters. There they explicitly speak to how preservation of these locations involves reconciling the fact that yes, these are beautiful and historically fascinating spaces, and immense atrocities were committed there. That fact cannot be shied away from.
Should have burnt them all. Reconstruction was a fucking mistake.
Also the first and only American coup d'état in the Wilmington massacre of 1898Reconstruction saw black men voting and getting elected to Congress and state legislatures, along with the prosecution of the original KKK. The compromise of 1877 that ushered in Redeemer Democrats, however...
It's that "a lot of horrible shit went on here but damn does this place look pretty" thing. Like having a wedding at the pyramids, except far more recent so the negative impact still exists, which is why "no one from that time is alive anymore so whatever" ain't gonna cut it
"Back when times were simpler and more honest"And then whines when people rightly point out that history is horrific and evil.
Yeah, about that...If that's the case with that property (I am not disputing you... I just don't know a better way of saying this), then good. I wish them success. I hope their guests walk away as better people. If I am in Savannah, I will add it to my list, if for no more reason than to donate.
Some weird white shit. And I say that being white. It's that "a lot of horrible shit went on here but damn does this place look pretty" thing. Like having a wedding at the pyramids, except far more recent so the negative impact still exists, which is why "no one from that time is alive anymore so whatever" ain't gonna cut it

they just want to be smiled upon by their ancestors. They know what they're doing. These plantation weddings are their victory laps.
