Yuri Lowell was such a popular Tales protagonist that they had to take him out of the Tales series popularity polls because he kept running away with it. They gave him a place of honor lol.

OP: yup, I love Fio, but she's popular because she the meganko and that's probably, really about it. I slowly migrated to liking Eri more, but then MS4 came out and we got Nadia...

Er

Anyway, Cloud is a good answer for this because I'll be goddamned if I can find a reason to like him, personally, from the OG game. I actually ended up liking him and Aerith both more in Remake than in OG for some reason, but I think it's because the game actually gave me a reason to give a damn about them.

Here's a good example:

Genosmrpg.png

Now obviously Geno isn't more popular than the mainline Mario cast, but speaking purely in the context of Square's Mario RPG originals, he's certainly the stand out favorite. To the point where he weirdly became a hugely requested Smash Bros. candidate.
Ya know, I've never personally, in my life, met anyone who is actually a fan of Geno without it being a meme. I've become convinced that his love on the internet is just a meme gone wild and nothing more.

Talking about characters that haven't been mentioned yet: Sub-Zero and Scorpion are effectively the faces of Mortal Kombat nowadays.

Both are better known than any other character from the roster and far more popular than Liu Kang, who was originally intended as the hero of the story.
Also Boon really, really, REALLY likes Scorpion. He's the face of every installment for that reason.

Yuri for Tales has already been mentioned but before him there was Leon, and tbh for the longest time this one made absolutely no sense to me since he was just kind of an asshole and didn't have that interesting of a role in the story. Though now that I've seen how fans react at events and whatnot it seems like among a very vocal sect of the JP fanbase, the character design and seiyuu are like 90% of the reason behind any characters popularity.

Valve has a lot of these: GLADoS and G-Man, if only for the fact that their series' protagonists are mute. Bill is also widely beloved despite clearly not being the intended main protag of L4D.

Hey! Some of us did played Super Mario RPG back in 1996 and got to genuinely like Geno (if only because he was the "cool and edgy" party member, but still...).

You might not be wrong about his current internet popularity or why he became so requested for Smash, however...

I mean, I did too. None of the original characters were terribly interesting to me, least of all a most naked, cape-only wearing living creepy doll.

Crap, I think I just made myself realize why the internet likes him so much.

This is really making me want to play Yakuza 0 after I eventually get tired of Nioh 2. I really need the context for this.

He owns a construction company that he uses as a front for money laundering and Yakuza things

Then he actually started building stuff

The rest is legend

Great so I basically have to finish KIwami 1, buy Kiwami 2 and start Yakuza 0 after Kiwami 1 kind of bored me towards the middle of it.

So basically, Kiwami 1 is a tough sell because at the end of the day Yakuza 1 is...a very old game. Kiwami 1 is trying its best, but the side content in Yakuza 1 isn't THAT great and the core story, while compelling, is still figuring the formula out. I would not recommend Kiwami 1 as a starting point for the series - I'd vastly recommend Y0 as the starting point for new players, and then you can play Kiwami after that.

I already have Kiwami one. Actually been playing Yakuza on and off since Y4 came out (on the PS3, I even have the damn zombie game). I just don't play too many of the games though, because they just seem like the same game after a while, hence why I have really long breaks from them. Also yeah Kiwami 1 came off as like the prototype game, which was why I stopped playing it since it was boring after a bit. I do want to pick up the two Judgement games and Like a Dragon at some point.

Yeah, don't bother with Kiwami 1. It worked well enough for me, but Yakuza zero is among the best games in the series anyway and a much more appealing introduction. If you were only going to play one of the games in the first place, it should be zero. They were way more experienced by the time of making it, and it shows.

Kiwami 1 is still at its core a ps2 remake where they were just starting out.

Here's the introduction cutscene to majima in Zero. It's early on, you start out with two chapters of kiryu before this, but this gives you a much more solid idea of the charater in zero than the jokey GIFs above.

I can't speak for everyone else, but for me, it's a few things. He's representative of the game itself, being the one who explains the story, and it's hard for me to think of him without thinking of the game's music and world, which I also love. Plus, he's great in battle, and his attacks are fun and cool (rocket arms, lasers, etc). For what it's worth, he looks less silly in game than he does in the official render.

In a just world Marcus and Blank from FFIX.

For a more serious answer, Vergil from DMC and Zero from Megaman.

EDIT: Also, I'm a unironic fan of Geno >_>;

Yakuza fatigue is real. If you want to hear about madness, think of this: I beat Judgment 1 last weekend, Like a Dragon on Saturday night, and I'm now in chapter 4 of Lost Judgment.

At least the genre shift in the middle makes it SLIGHTLY more palatable, but man, I'm gonna need a break from Yakuza for like 8 months when I finish LJ.

and I still have Kiwami 2 and Fist of the North Star Lost Paradise to beat...

I'm aware of the game's story stuff. The best part about Yakuza to me is how it's a mix of serious and just absurd comedic shit that's supposed to be taken seriously.

I still really need to buy Lost Paradise. Too bad I missed out on the Kiryu DLC.

Yumi from Senran Kagura, she is one of the protagonists but she's just WAY more popular than anyone else.

In Cross Tag she's the only rep of the series while Asuka/Homura are not in it.

Lost Paradise is on sale for 8 bucks, and 0 is $5 digitally right now. You should just buy both, lol.

Lost Judgment is the only game in the series (except Kenzan!) that I don't own on disc, help
I have had Yakuza 0 physically since the year it came out and was on sale for Black Friday, just never started it. Guess I can just pick up Lost Paradise. The Judgement games on sale?

2B.

I don't think many people knew what NieR was before Automata came out, but 2B is hot, so the Internet became obsessed with her, and at this point I think she has transcended her own game, seeing how people continue to cosplay her and make fanart of her to this day. Meanwhile 9S and A2 are nowhere that popular. It's all about 2B!

I don't think I understand what the fuck the actual question is.
lmao.
I'm taking it as "games which have multiple playable characters*, where one character is a standout favourite in terms of popularity"

*so things like Final Fight with its 3 main characters, fighting games with their rosters, Kingdom Hearts BBS with its 3 playable characters etc.

That's a mostly naked, cape-only wearing living creepy doll that has guns and shoots lasers. =P

Don't forget the lasers, they are kind of important.

Trials of Mana gives all six protagonists equal billing (though you do sort of get the impression that they consider Duran to be the main guy). Riesz is the most popular by a very VERY wide margin.

(And also... well... when the remake was announced there were a lot of comments from certain corners of the internet to the tune of "She's from a game? I only know her from porn!")

I'd say Scorpion and Sub Zero, but Mortal Kombat is a big IP to be fair.
I feel like MK is in the SF category, where even though there are certainly a few standout characters, almost all the classic characters are up there in popularity. Like I wouldn't say characters like Raiden, Akuma, Cammy, Liu Kang, Jax, M. Bison, Shao Khan, Sagat, etc. are as popular as the big characters, but they're still way, waaaay more popular than most of the later characters they introduced.

I feel like Bill and Coach are far more popular than the rest of the main casts in Left 4 Dead and Left 4 Dead 2 respectively.

Chun-Li

She's become the face of the franchise right alongside Ryu despite just being introduced as another World Warrior in SFII like everyone else. Every crossover (besides Smash), it's always Ryu and Chun-Li at the minimum.

She even had her own (terrible) movie, something no other character can claim.

I wonder where Mario ranks in player choice for Mario branded online games. You hardly ever see Mario in online Mario Kart. I'm sure it is the same for Mario Party.

in my personal experience, i spend so much time playing as Mario in his solo games that the last character i want to pick in the multiplayer games is him. i feel a lot of people feel this way.
he still has some fans that will pick him in those games but i'm pretty sure his low appearance ratio is because of what i mentioned earlier.
