Image books going on indefinite hiatus or silently dying has made me reluctant to pick up newer titles, because getting invested in a series just to have no new about it for years sucks. At least I know DC and Marvel will put our books monthly even if they aren't all great.

So much happened in the Ultron Agenda event

- Aaron inciting a robot uprising
- Tony being a synthetic clone and losing his company to Arno Stark.
- Rhodes becoming War Machine again.
- Arno created clones of his parents.
- Arno as Iron Man 2020
- Synth Tony reverting back to his alcoholism

It sounds primarily to me like a way to market tickets for the regular 21 Convention. Said another way, this sounds like one of those events you can drop your woman off at to justify the trip to Orlando to go hang with your real loves.

A ticket lets you bring a friend, or you can bring your Patriarch (your man, or your dad, it's hard to tell what they consider the difference), but they go to the separate MEN'S ONLY convention where they pose with the MWGA hat and dream about those debt-free ladies:

The fact that Civil War is the same rating as Kraven's Last Hunt pains me. And that you have it at the same or better than Ewing's Ultimates is just as bad.

- Rhodes becoming War Machine again.
- Arno created clones of his parents.

Also the 2020 armor is Godbuster armor

What comic (new or old) are you most excited to read in 2020?

My backlog is massive, but I'm looking forward to (hopefully) reading:

-Punisher Max by Ennis
-Lots more X-Men(90's popular stories, Morrison, and Whedon runs particularly)
-Lots of Image catchup, East of West, Paper Girls, Brubaker everything...
-Wonder Woman by Simone Omni(Feb!) plus likely Perez' run ahead of movie.

Tons more, but that is priority stuff right now.

My most anticipated is, assuming he doesn't drag it on even longer, the presumed Kindred reveal in ASM #50. It could mean major things for the title's future and past. Or manmademan could be right and it's Carly Cooper. Hopefully it's the former. Otherwise of the titles we know of, Ewing's Guardians.

For older books I'm looking forward to finally reading Wally West Flash after a few false starts. I plan to read a lot of DC this year.

COMICS!!! OT's Top 10 Comics of 2019 Begins!

eymLVfk.jpg

#10 - Batman by Tom King and Others

The stunning conclusion to "City of Bane" is here! How will Flashpoint Batman be vanquished from our dimension? What will become of Gotham Girl now that she's betrayed all she knows? How will the Bat team cope without Alfred? Will Catwoman stick around? Who will rebuild Gotham City? Is Batman ever going to be Batman again? The event of the summer now closes out the year, setting the stage for a whole new path for the Dark Knight Detective. You don't dare miss the extra-sized concluding chapter to Tom King's epic run on Batman-and it all leads to the new Batman and Catwoman series!

To say that Batman by Tom King has been a controversial comic in ComicEra would be an understatement. Some people love it, some people hate it. As the run comes to its end, that mixed response is made evident in this year's list. Batman was rated highly be 3 different ComicEra community members, making it the least-popular comic of the top 10. Batman's earned its place solely due to the passion of the fans it does have. Bring on Bat+Cat.

UfK7gae.jpg

#9 - Harleen by Stjepan Sejic
Dr. Harleen Quinzel has discovered a revolutionary cure for the madness of Gotham City-she just needs to prove it actually works. But with the criminal justice and mental health establishments united against her, the brilliant young psychologist must take drastic measures to save Gotham from itself. Witness Harleen's first steps on a doomed quest that will give birth to the legendary super-villain Harley Quinn in this stunning reimagining of Harley and The Joker's twisted and tragic love affair by visionary storyteller Stjepan Sejic (AQUAMAN: UNDERWORLD, SUICIDE SQUAD, Sunstone).

It wouldn't be ComicEra if either Harley Quinn or Stjepan Sejic didn't make the Top 10. Or, at least, Messi would burn the community down if they went unrepresented. Harleen is the story that Sejic was born to write and the character and writer/artist's following in the community made their voices heard. Harleen is the highest-ranked comic on the list that didn't have a single #1 vote, but still managed 4 top 4 votes. Now begin's Messi's work to persuade enough people to subscribe to Sejic's Patreon so he can make the list again in 2020 (barring a possible Harley+Poison Ivy Black Label book).

HGudBcM.jpg

#8 - The Wild Storm by Warren Ellis and Jon Davis Hunt
A troubled woman, barred by her employer from continuing her research, walks miserably through New York City. It takes her a moment to notice that everybody else is looking up. A man has been thrown from the upper floor of the Halo skyscraper. And that woman—Angela Spica, sick from the transhuman implants she's buried in her own body—is the only person who can save him. What she doesn't know is that the act of saving that one man will tip over a vast and secret house of cards that encloses the entire world, if not the inner solar system. This is how the Wild Storm begins, and it may destroy covert power structures, secret space programs and even all of human history.

The Wild Storm surged onto ComicEra's Top 10 Comics of 2019 despite little conversation about the book in recent months. With The Wild Storm ending in July, ComicEra fans have been more focused on the fate of WildCats going into 2020. But that didn't' stop 6 different ComicEra members from remembering The Wild Storm when writing up their lists. Where to place The Wild Storm was a bit less clear, as members put it at #1, #3, #5, #7, and twice at #9. It took all of that support to bring The Wild Storm up to #8 in 2019's Best Comics.

FBYg0WZ.jpg

#7 - Spider-Man Life Story by Chip Zdarsky and Mark Bagley
In 1962's Amazing Fantasy #15, fifteen-year-old Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider and became the Amazing Spider-Man! 57 years have passed in the real world since that event - so what would have happened if the same amount of time passed for Peter as well? To celebrate Marvel's 80th anniversary, Chip Zdarsky and Spider-Man legend Mark Bagley unite to spin a unique Spidey tale -- telling an entire history of Spider-Man from beginning to end, set against the key events of the decades through which he lived! Prepare to watch Peter Parker age through 57 years of groundbreaking history - and find out what happens to him, and those he loves the most!

Spider-Man is a very popular character on ComicEra, but only one Spider-Man story in 2019 received a meaningful reception within the community. But boy was it one hell of a reception. Zdarsky's Life Story for Peter Parker was very popular, with some community members even saying it's the best Spider-Man story in years. Spider-Man: Life-Story made 5 different users' lists, including both a #1 and a #2 ranking. Now if only we can persuade Marvel to put Zdarsky on ASM...

TY4HB6M.jpg

#6 - Superman Smashes the Klan by Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru
The year is 1946, and the Lee family has moved from Metropolis' Chinatown to the center of the bustling city. While Dr. Lee is greeted warmly in his new position at the Metropolis Health Department, his two kids, Roberta and Tommy, are more excited about being closer to their famous hero, Superman!

While Tommy adjusts to the fast pace of the city, Roberta feels out of place, as she tries and fails to fit in with the neighborhood kids. As the Lees try to adjust to their new lives, an evil is stirring in Metropolis: the Ku Klux Klan. When the Lee family awakens one night to find a burning cross on their lawn, they consider leaving town. But the Daily Planet offers a rewad for information on the KKK, and their top two reporters, Lois Lane and Clark Kent, dig into the story.
When Tommy is kidnapped by the KKK, Superman leaps into action—with help from Roberta! But Superman is still new to his powers—he hasn't even worked out how to fly yet, so he has to run across town. Will Superman and Roberta reach Tommy in time?

It's got punching Nazis in the face, it's got insanely adorable (and appropriately idealized) art from Gurihiru, and it's got a whole lot of love in sheer rejection of hate. No wonder Superman Smashes the Klan made #6 on ComicEra's list of the Top 10 Comics of 2019. And it's not even over yet! Included in 5 different users' lists, including a #1 and #2 ranking, a clear conclusion can be drawn -- Gurihiru is more popular than Superman. At least on ComicEra.

---

That's it for this part of the ComicEra Top 10 Comics of 2019! Stay tuned for the Top 5! And don't forget to check out the previous post, which includes the comics that came just short of making this year's list -- #11 through #30.

Nothing brand new really looks super interesting atm. Still hoping for My Favourite Thing is Monsters v2 releasing this year. Also hoping for a 3 Gatsu No Lion english release.

Continuing series/backlog - Need to continue Batman Morrison, finally read Akira, BPRD Hell on Earth, start on Gilbert Hernandez's Love and Rockets work (I've only finihed Jaime's main books), catch up on Natsume's Book of Friends.

Most exciting is gonna be One Piece. It has been great the last couple of years years but we are reaching peak hype levels again.

Superwoman is a very interesting book. I'll say that. The Lex and Lena shit is horrifying. Traci 13 is weird, but cool. This is basically the Metropolis superhero book I wanted.
Although I forgot about how much Superman Reborn fucked with everything.
There is also the fact that Carol actually killed Stark during Civil War II.
That didn't even cross my mind. I wonder if that'll ever come up. They had the balls to bring up Hawkeye killing Hulk in No Road Home and that was wild.
Nothing brand new really looks super interesting atm. Still hoping for My Favourite Thing is Monsters v2 releasing this year. Also hoping for a 3 Gatsu No Lion english release.

All Image has left is Saga, Crowded and Sex Criminals and the latter is ending by Summer.

Image ain't got shit left unless they want to do SCI FI DYSTOPIA PLOT #356

Also, Marvel is gonna fast track a Scarlet Witch book now LOL.

Deadly Class tho.

Daredevil #16 - It sure feels good to see Matt at the top of his game. Also glad to see Elektra evidently has a bigger role to play in all of this. At this point, I can't wait to see Fisk back and smashing heads together, but I don't mind him sitting out the mafia wars as well. And damn, the art is gorgeous

I love the top 10 comics of 2019 list, and I AM going to let you finish, but while we wait for #5 to #1, I gotta tell you: this list is complete bunk, and you should not respect it, because of how wrong it is.

Allow me to provide the actual correct list below, with two comics that DIDN'T EVEN MAKE IT TO THE SHORTLIST because you are complete monsters.

10. The Invitation (InCase)
Cosmic horror expressed through malleable bodies, BDSM, and dreamlike imagery, executed by one of the best erotic artists working today. Every aspect of it comes together to serve its themes and ideas, also did I mention it's really hot?

9. Martian Manhunter (Riley Rossmo/Steve Orlando)
Great take on one of my favorite DC characters, blending the familiar of great police fiction with a grand cosmic strangeness, mysteries and conspiracies. It's about identity, it's about regret, it's about trauma, and it kept me going through every twist and turn.

8. Superman's Pal, Jimmy Olsen (Matt Fraction/Steve Lieber)
Fraction and Lieber take the format of old Silver Age comics, and weaponize it in the service of an elaborate farce. You'll laugh out loud at the jokes, you'll be dazzled by the complex intersecting plotlines, and who knows, you might even find the odd bit of poignancy in there.

7. The Wild Storm (Warren Ellis/Jon Davis Hunt)
The finale to The Wild Storm was like everything that had come before, but bigger, with more explosions, and all your favorites squaring off. Turns out I'll always be here for stylish violence, witty dialogue, meditations on who gets to shape the future and how, and all that good good Ellis stuff. Also if we don't get WildCATS in 2020 I'm gonna flip my fucking lid.

(Actual 7. Event Leviathan (Brian Michael Bendis/Alex Maleev)
So you know how Action Comics was the cooler of Bendis' two Superman books because of all the intrigue, the conspiracies and the relatively street-level action? Well EVENT LEVIATHAN was basically just those parts. A tight little mystery thriller carried by a heavy helping of all my favorite DCU smartasses, all painted by Alex Goddamn Maleev. It's pure thrill ride continuity porn, and thus it's everything I love about event comics.

6. Naomi (Brian Michael Bendis/Jamal Campbell/David F. Walker)
The constant feeling of discovery I got from reading this book month to month was an amazing experience. Here was a new character, a fresh point of view on the DC Universe, carried by one of the most innovative artists in comics. I've never seen a mainstream superhero book like Naomi, and that's a feat.

5. Heroes in Crisis (Mitch Gerads/Tom King/Clay Mann)
I understand how a prestige giallo about trauma, isolation, loneliness and suicidal ideation might not be for everyone, especially when it involves beloved characters like Wally West and Poison Ivy, but I still feel like the book has genuine mystery thrills, while speaking to the issues it raises with an unparalleled sincerity. Plus Clay Mann is at his best in the body drama of it all. I STILL LOVE IT.

4. Harleen (Stjepan Sejic)
The creator of Sunstone turns "Mad Love" into an all-time classic by zooming in on its central character and getting in touch with the immediacy of her emotions, while making key changes to the story in order to make her the active protagonist she always should have been. It's canon to me now. Also it looks great, and yes somehow the Joker is hot now.

3. The Immortal Hulk (Joe Bennett/Al Ewing, et al.)
In 2019, Hulk escaped Hell, destroyed an Abomination, and declared war on the people responsible for the ongoing ecological disaster that threatens to kill us all. Also he destroyed everything at the end of time. And also it's not just the Hulk. Bennett kept delivering on the action and the horror, while Ewing got even more ambitious and all-encompassing in his weaving together of everything Hulk, past, present, and future. Was it better than year one? Yeah probably.

(Actual 3. Peter Cannon: Thunderbolt (Kieron Gillen/Caspar Wijngaard)
Of all the takes on Watchmen this year, from the TV show to Doomsday Clock, Peter Cannon is the only one to contend with Watchmen's legacy as a comic, and how it shaped mainstream American Cape Comics, from the widescreen blockbuster action of Ellis and Hitch's The Authority to Morrison's rebellion against the form and Millar's entire fucking deal. It's scholarly without being dull, fun without being flippant, and every page is loaded with things to pore over and study. As far as "comic book history done in comics", this is up there with Flex Mentallo, and that should tell you how much of an all-timer this is.

2. House of X/Powers of X (Jonathan Hickman/Pepe Larraz/R.B. Silva)
The idea of mutants as their own nation with their own culture and their own political institutions has been done before, so when House of X #1 dropped and didn't really feel like the most important X-Men comic since New X-Men #114, there were reasons to doubt Marvel's marketing. But then, the two series that were one began dropping game-changer after game-changer, rewriting the rules of the X-Men for the forseeable future with all the gusto and the confidence that had been missing from X-Men books during the decade. Everything that followed would be inevitably new, and it's made going to the comics every week exciting in a way it's not been in a hot while.

1. Dial H for Hero (Sam Humphries/Joe Quinones)
No comic this year reminded me of how much I fucking love comics like Dial H for Hero. Obviously it starts at "Joe Quinones is the most gifted mimic in comics, and his pitch-perfect tributes to everything from 90s Image Comics to Masamune Shirow to Chris Ware are a sight to behold in and of themselves", but the magic is in how Sam Humphries uses these tributes to tell a basic, yet powerful story of finding inspiration in comics to make the world a better place. I cried because of a well-timed Alex Ross tribute in #6 and no comic made me feel that way this year. It's the best and y'all are WRONG.

The fact that Civil War is the same rating as Kraven's Last Hunt pains me. And that you have it at the same or better than Ewing's Ultimates is just as bad.

Kraven's Last Hunt seems overrated to me. Too grim and edgy for Spidey. It doesn't surprise me that the script for it was initially meant for a Batman story. Enjoyed Spencer's Hunted more.

Ultimates is hampered by wasting issues on Civil War II, Secret Empire and also introducing the Troubleshooters and then completely forgetting about them. The stuff with Galactus, Eternity, the Jailer, AntiMan and the actually team working together is all cool but the series loses focus too much.

what would have been the Batman equivalent of Kraven nude and literally balls deep into a room full of spiders

X-men #4 - Feels a lot like East of West in a good way with the political maneuvering and lot of pointed social commentary as well. Apocalypse is so good since the relaunch, from Excalibur to here he's very entertaining to read. Also good to hear Xavier still somewhat believing in his dream . Probably my favourite issue in DoX so far

Kraven's Last Hunt I dark, but I wouldn't call it edgy.

Now Grim Hunt, the "sequel" THAT is some edgy shit. And if you read Shed before that you can suffer an edge overload.

Thor #1 was pretty good. Though I get a little sad seeing chunks of cosmic marvel getting cut out so that Ewing won't be able to use them for his Guardians.
