Not sure about that. The exciting thing about Control was precisely that Remedy was evolving their game design to a more open level design and game structure. Quantum Break would be like slipping back into a straight jacket, with less interesting encounters to boot.
You're right, they shouldn't even try it for themselves. Forget I said anything.

Interesting pick. Got somewhere around...halfway through? Didn't really hold my interest. Neat tech demo, cool graphics and effects.

While I want to say Sekiro or Fire Emblem, games like Control are probably more accessible than a From game and less niche than an anime-strategy game.

Safe choice.

My pick, taking into account user accessibility, would be Jedi Fallen Order.

I don't know about safe, I'm not sure if there was any kind of popularity behind it at launch. It's actually something of a wild card choice, it's like picking a cult classic movie that became popular due to word of mouth to win best picture at the Academy Awards.

Yeah.

"Control is a safe pick...my pick would be Jedi Fallen Order" is an ... interesting take on the meaning of "safe pick". Bit like saying "The Shape of Water was a safe pick. My pick would be Dunkirk"

Fair point. Though it's safe as in it's a pick that won't offend anybody (look at the DS review thread lol). It's not a remake, not anime, and can actually be finished by an average gamer.

It's a game I'd show my non-gamer friends if they came over and politely asked "what's new in games these days" to make conversation :)

I just started playing it. Looks great, but not feeling like a GOTY. I mean, we had Sekiro, DMC V, RE2 and Smash this year...

Jedi is the first SW game since probably KOTOR series, with a serious and singular focus on single player. That alone makes it stand out at unique (and similarly to be fair to Control, it also thrives in its single player vision).

The academy award analogy you note is a bit strange IMO...shape of water made almost $200M on a small budget.

Edit - I see the context of my jedi suggestion was lost. Essentially I was saying if we're looking for a neutral-ish choice for GOTY, then Jedi fits better. If we're going strictly on merit, I mean we have Sekiro, Smash, RE2, just as SoulsHunt noted. Fire Emblem too.

Great game, but not feeling GOTY.

That heartfelt reaction video from Remedy really drives home the human element I think we tend of forget exists behind these games. Those smiles, the genuine reactions and exclamations of pure joy — great stuff.

The game deserves it. The only other game that actually felt as memorable for me this year was Death Stranding, and it's because of how unique these two games are. I can't really compare them to anything in recent memory.

I'm a big DMC fan, but the story and atmosphere in DMC5 were so bad I forgot I played the game this year. They ruined Trish and Lady too, which left a pretty awful taste in my mouth.

Sekiro was probably my GOTY overall, but I'm not mad Control won.

Honorable mention: RE2 Remake, but it is not a new game, it's a remake.

I'm just happy it wasn't Outer Worlds. That is easily the most boring game I've ever played in my life.

More alienating subject matter (freaky fish sex / xfiles meets brazil meets Finnish mythology) vs tried-and-true pop culture franchise (WWII / Star Wars) was the comparison I was making. The tried-and-true franchise is obviously the "safe" pick — no one ever got fired for voting for it, etc. "Safe pick" is the phrase usually used to describe what you're calling a "neutral-ish choice"

Yeah, I have both of those issues. I think the first (also happens when loading into an area) is kind of a non-issue. Game stabilizes within a couple seconds.

Performance is also bad if you have the map up. If you try running around with the map up there's a lot of stutters. Kind of strange I think since I wouldn't imagine a map would have any real impact on performance, but oddly it does here.

Yeah I definitely saw that map issue as well. I think I didn't notice it as much since I usually just opened it up briefly to re-orient myself if needed or to find where to fast travel. I think I remember hearing somewhere (maybe on Eurogamer) that the game originally wasn't meant have a map, though I'd have to verify that. But perhaps would explain how barebones the map is and the wonky performance issues it brings.

I think one thing I really liked about Control is it was really fun to find my way around The Oldest House with minimal map assistance, as it did feel more natural to me that way. That being said, I did wish it had something like RE2 Remake's map system to quickly tell you which areas you still had collectables to find (and marking off areas where you found everything of interest). Uncovering lore was one of my favorite things in the game, and a system that streamlined it a bit would have been nice, at least to me.

If you enjoyed Control's lighting, atmosphere, and overall drug-trippy audio/visual presentation, check out Beyond The Black Rainbow (should still be free on Tubi).

X-Files and Twin Peaks are often referenced when talking about Control, but I'd be shocked if this wasn't a primary source of inspiration for Remedy.

Anyway, well deserved again. Hoping to squeeze in another playthrough over Christmas.

"Beyond Control" eh

Hopefully this helps the game sell well. They dropped the ball with the promo for this game prior to launch because with the scores and praise there should be no reason why this game didn't chart on NPD when it released.

I know and i am surprised, i heard some said it was okay so never thought that it was this good to win GotY.
It's really awesome TBH. I would just be wary depending on the version you're getting. PC is best, then X, then Pro is where you start to have some noticeable performance issues, but the game still runs well a lot of the time. Base systems get pretty dicey.

Pretty sure Control is wrapped and waiting for e under the tree. Can't wait to give it a go, I love games with telekinesis like Psi-Ops!

This is the one game I haven't played of the big GOTY contenders, i'm so annoyed it never made it to Steam. Happy they got that big paycheck from Epic, and its done so well for them critically though! Maybe its for the best, i still don't have an RTX card.

Fantastic news, absolutely loved my time with the game and now patiently waiting for the DLCs. First season pass I bought in years. In similar news, Control is also porn for people that love fonts. Everybody on the brink of getting it please check it out so that Remedy can continue being awesome.

Sad Disco Elysium didn't take it, but Control blew me away so I am still happy for it. Great pick.

Probably in my top 5. Disco Elysium is the number 1, but of bigger budget multiplatform games, it's a fine choice.

I'm a little more than half way through. I like it a lot but not sure about GOTY.

Yeah. I don't think it executed on a high enough level nor was bold enough for GOTY. A solid 8/10 but I felt like a lot of games ended up that way this year: Jedi Fallen Order, Outer Worlds, Borderlands 3, Days Gone.

For GOTY I'd be picking between DMC5, Death Stranding, Sekiro, and Destiny 2: Shadowkeep.

To be fair, aside from Death Stranding and possibly Sekiro, both DMC5 and Destiny 2 Shadow keep are pretty by the books games that we've seen a thousand times.

It seems to me like they went strictly on merit and picked Control.

Well deserved.

In terms of story concept and world building it's quite creative but in terms of actual gameplay design it's the most bland and uninteresting thing I've played all year. There's nothing about it that makes it worthy of a GOTY title imo.

I like Control a lot thus far, but didn't IGN give it an 8.8? Surprised to see it win.
Jonathan Dornbush gave it 8.8 to be precise. I very much doubt others there had much of an input to the review and the score, I believe it to be an invidual opinion. While IGN Goty is picked by a team I think. Don't know what their system for picking the best game was. Could be that Control wasn't even any one person's top game for the year, but was like the second or third favorite to many so it did well in their voting.

Well deserved

One of the few single player games I have completed recently, really enjoyed it.

Disco Elysium would be my number 1 though personally.

Currently playing it. Fun game, but this shows how weak 2019 was. The story almost immediately lost me, but the destructablility is something else.

I had more fun with Fallen Order and Days Gone though.

So let me get this straight.

-Well known studio with multiple classics
-Third-Person shooter with superpowers
-Great graphics, an RTX showcase
-Great reviews and good WoM
-Multiplatform
-Gets nominated almost everywhere for GOTY and even win wins it on one of the most popular gaming sites.

Sells like 400k copies. What is wrong with this industry?
