Why is there controversy surrounding CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077?

CD Projekt Red has a history of transphobia. This is well documented at this point and not a matter of debate. Due to this context there is particular concern about transphobic or insensitive content in Cyberpunk 2077 itself, such as the decision to tie gender to voice in the character creator, and trans fetishization in illustrations in the game—and these are just examples from prerelease footage. Additionally, there have been concerns about racist imagery and stereotyping. This article goes into depth about some of these issues.

What incidents of transphobia have occurred surrounding the game and the company, and why are they hurtful?

This list will be updated over time as more examples come to light, especially as the game releases and more content is uncovered. If you wish to have something added to this list, please send me a DM and get my attention.

Why is ResetEra allowing an official thread for this game?

There has been a lot of discussion about whether there should even be an official thread for Cyberpunk 2077, and many points of view were considered for this decision. Ultimately, a thread like this can serve as a platform for minority concerns to be aired and discussed respectfully, and given appropriate attention. We've also heard from minority members, including some trans members, who have asked for a space where they can talk about the game without needing to worry about trolling and bigoted posting. We expect all posters in the thread to extend the consideration and empathy to give them that space. We will be moderating as strictly as necessary to make sure they do.

What can I do to help fight transphobia?

Transphobia exists in many aspects of our lives. From casual discrimination such as the continuous misuse of a person's preferred pronouns, to more serious ramifications such as housing being denied, legal rights being taken away, and being discriminated in the legal system. Every trans person either has experienced transphobia in their lives, or will experience transphobia at some point.

Moreover, transphobia is a systematic issue that is present in every level of our society. Politicians fight to take away our rights. Celebrities use coded language and religious justifications, if not outright hostility, in order to continue to deny our existence. Media continues to portray us as the butt of a joke, or acts like we're something to be fascinated by, rather than treated with respect.

Actions speak louder than words: Become active in your local politics, donate to transgender causes, stand up for these issues wherever they arise, and if you know transgender people in your life be there for them and support them.

Here are some pro-trans organizations around the world where you can make a donation and show your support
  • For those of you in the US, The Trevor Project is one of the leading LGBT organizations. They are dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention for people who are in need of support, love, and care.
  • For those of you in the UK, Mermaids is dedicated to the support of transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse children, young adults, and their families. They have been around since 1995, and have been one of the most vocal voices speaking out against transphobia in the UK, including showing the dangers that transphobia imposes upon our youth.
  • If you would like to donate to CDPR's native country of Poland, you can find the Trans-Fuzja Foundation website here. The Trans-Fuzja Foundation has been around since 2008, and is dedicated to the support of transgender people in Poland in many aspects of life and society, including politics.
We are your friends. We are your family members. We're your coworkers. We're the people you meet on the street. We're the essential workers who keep society running in a pandemic. We're everywhere. We're not some sort of freak or joke, and we're not going away.

I want to give major thanks to Uzzy for lending her talent, time, and effort in putting together graphics and material for this official thread. Without her, this would not have been possible on such short notice. I would also like to give a shout out and thanks to Kyuuji for allowing me to use images and links from her own thread for this posts.

Got a 3090 and have a 4k Monitor but it only runs at 60hz. Have an option to get a Acer Predator XB271HU 1440p monitor.

I am actually considering buying this screen and playing the game on it without dlss. Am I crazy?! should i stick at 4k and 60hz (no freesync or gsync)
You'd be crazy not to turn on DLSS imo. The 3090 can't even hit 60fps at 4k native ultra (and thats without RT)

Tbh if aiming on PC in this game with 50-60 fps works fine I dont care that much.
But usually you feel a noticable delay at that framerate when aiming.

Probably aiming for 1440p high settings, no RT and DLSS (if it isnt too blurry) and hoping for 60-70 fps.

Early trailers for this game implied an immersive sim ala Shock or Deus Ex, it turned out to be a regular open world game.

Everyone was calling it GTA x Deus Ex anyway when the early trailers hit. It never looked remotely like an immersive sim to me at all, but more of a bog-standard open-world game with Cyberpunk trappings. CDPR wasn't going to radically change their formula to a genre that would sell less overall. I'm just hoping that the quests are engaging enough and that the combat isn't terrible. That will at least make it more entertaining than just being GTA with cyberware.

As for the day one patch, does this mean the patch only gets released when the game unlocks ... Meaning you pretty much have to wait for the patch to finish downloading before you can play the game?

Or can I play the game with the day one patch already installed the moment the game unlocks?

5% impact is a big deal when you are a website that specialises in accurate benchmarking performance like TH and GN.

That 5% can push the 3080 to over 60fps avg at 1440p Ultra w/ DLSS + RT. Its meaningful.
And your statement on nvidia drivers is bogus, there have been plenty occasions where their drivers have given around a 10% increase in performance (most recently, AC:Valhalla)

Was gonna say, 5% is kind of a huge deal. PC gamers are out here doing anything they can for stable overclocks on every single component they can just to squeeze a handful of frames in performance boosts, so even if a driver and patch combine to just improve performance slightly that gain is very welcome and what helps a lot of people hit stable framerates. If removing Denuvo gets me an extra 3 fps thats less work I need to do to get a stable 60 and extremely significant.

You should be alright. I believe that's about what the recommended specs were for 1440p/Ultra when they released them. Could probably scale back a few things to hit a stable 60+ fps.

In any case, you should check this paragraph from the Tom's Hardware article:

"We'll get to the DLSS results in a moment, but it's worth mentioning that you don't have to have RT enabled to use DLSS. For example, the RTX 2060 managed a respectable 55 fps average at 4K medium with DLSS Performance mode. Sure, that's upscaling 1080p to 4K using an AI algorithm, but the end result is actually quite good—better than native 1080p, probably comparable to 1440p".

So, if you are willing to make concessions (such as RT) you can still get great results with lower GPUs. DLSS can push the RTX 2060 lifespan, it will depend on the developer. For Cyberpunk it seems that we might be fine, let's see what the launch day patch has to say.
Yeah really I'm fine without RT, I just wanna hit 60 at 1440p. Death Stranding pulls it off mostly well, but it seems this game is way more intense

Why do reviewers seem to care so little about bugs when scoring the game, it's so weird.

Yeah there are frequent bugs everywhere every moment of the game and it's horribly optimized, 9/10 amazing game.

That's media critics for you when it comes to marquee AAA games. I haven't put much stock in them for a long time now.

You can fix bugs with future patches. You can't really fix bad writing or terrible gameplay. A lot of games have been buggy at launch and still scored well despite it.

Yet it's only ever specific developers/genres that ever get this leniency. Hmmmmm.

You could also release a game after two hours dev time and just patch the rest in later I guess. Why hold it against them?

Because the whole game reviewing business is total nonsense these days.

with games like that countless smaller outlets give 9/10 or 10/10 because they are not interested in backlash and just do what everyone does: giving higher grades than they should.

and there are enough sites that are metacritic relevant who always do such reviews which pushes the scores always higher than they should be.

i am done with game reviews for a long time now, it is just nonsense. if i am interested in a game i play for myself to see and experience the game for myself and i don´t need to know what some peeps writing for some outlets think or not think about a game. it is not interesting to me because these are all just opinion pieces anyways and real "criticism" is so rare that reviews just don´t matter anymore.

this game has 7/10 written all over it but because it is hyped and the next big thing they give 9/10 regardless of the technical state of the game. as i said, its nonsense.

Blind faith that the game will be patched post launch. Game reviewers have built an ethos where they review what they imagine the game could be rather than the actual product.

I wish I could get a complete listing of the music artists in game but haven't seen anything yet. Given the fact that Richard Devine is in I'm hoping to see more artists like that. GTAV had the Flying Lotus station and such so my expectations are high.

I usually don't care for review scores but it's a shame most of the critical reviews about the trans issues are those that don't give number scores anymore.

Yeah at a later time. But corpo will probably be my first choice. I did some more digging and seems the arc is this
Wich seems more "realistic" then being full top dog

During the prologue V starts off as an up-and-coming employee working in the counterintelligence division of Arasaka. They work under Arthur Jenkins who covets a promotion recently given to his rival Susan Abernathy.

Had the PS4 version pre-ordered but cancelled it until I have more info about performance on base PS4... At this pace I might as well just wait for the PS5 version.

I can see a new Crowbcat video made out of this game. 100%.

I think I'm going to wait though because I'd much rather play it on the next gen patch and hopefully by then they have a GOTY edition or whatever with most of the bugs ironed out. I have such a huge backlog that this is probably a good thing. Well for those who have it, enjoy and I'll keep tabs on this thread to see how people like it.

Of course 5% can be impactful, I was speaking in terms of Funo's and my situation. As in a 5% increase wouldn't make us be able to play this at 1440p with RTX on with our graphic cards. Even if no denuvo and drivers gave us a total of 15% increase (which is incredibly generous) we'd still not be able to.

Yep, certain studios and certain franchises get that special treatment.

I don't think this is true. Destiny had average reviews, and it came from Bungie.

Ghost Recon: Breakpoint had horrible reviews last year, and the game was an actual mess at release. I was playing it (and still liking it) at release, but that game was a mess.

After reading most of these reviews, it looks like CP2077 is a great game, but not without problems.

I will take the plunge on Thursday with day one patch and it will be interesting to see how I feel about it later this week.

A lot of Early Access games do just that. Release the bare components and then build off them. My point is that a game can be good or great if a little buggy, and that's notably better than a game that's not fun but runs flawlessly. If they game literally doesn't launch or crashes frequently (like, every 5-10 minutes) it absolutely should be docked points. But if it's just weird clipping and some AI issues every hour or so, I think you can still form an opinion on the game with the assumption those bugs will be taken care of.

Awesome OT, kinda looking forward to playing this, but also hesitant.

After the recent events, i for the first time ever donated to charity. I donated to Trans-Fuzja. It wasn't much, but I will most likely donate more in the near future. This game, and the surrounding issues has really brought to light these issues, and made me think pretty hard about what's happening.

I have a trans cousin, and I'm the only person in my family that still talks to him and supports his transition. i have always felt bad for what he must go through daily, but only recently have i started to see abit more of what that would look like. Life is horrible sometimes.

Thanks for bringing up some of these subjects, thanks for making it more widely known. I really hope one day these issues aren't issues. Nobody is bothered by who we love or who we are.

Anyways, i just wanted to post this.

That's what I've been missing this past decade, a game to finally, once and for all, trully step up to the challenge of rivalling that ultimate Fallout 3 PS3 experience.

I had alright luck in Fallout 3 but New Vegas PS3 I encountered so many bugs. Like randomly after being able to enter The Strip for dozens of hours it suddenly needed a key. Thankfully the robot guards had one

The funny thing about that is they are labeled EARLY ACCESS. This is a game with 8.5 fucking YEARS since being announced. It's hilarious.

I swear this will be the game where the zoom feature missing on PS5 will be hard to swallow, the item descriptions look so small and now you can´t zoom in anymore.

Was a nice accessibility feature Sony, don´t know why it isn´t on the PS5. but thats the console as a whole, one step forward, three steps back.

Here's hoping that Gsync will do the trick for everything below ~50 FPS then :)

Think I am going to wait for the ps5 patch, hopefully by then they will have sorted the bugs in the game. Cd project have only made one good game so I am not sure why the bugs have been washed over by reviewers. They really should be taken to account when the game is scored regardless of day one patches. (the patched version should have been available to press.)

I expanded on my point after the first 2 sentences for a reason. I think we can also agree that Cyberpunk is a much larger scale and complex game than just about any Early Access title (except maybe Star Citizen?). I was addressing specifically the claim that you could garner good review scores based on potential alone—and that definitely happens with many Early Access games. I think we need to see more gameplay footage to determine if the buggy gameplay is game breaker or just immersion breaking—or likely somewhere in between. I don't think some frequent but minor bugs completely destroys someone's ability to gauge the potential of a game if those inconveniences are fixed.

Normally I'd grab a game like this on PC but since mine is outdated and I just got both next gen systems, I'm wondering for those who also have both - what system do you plan on getting it for? I keep going back and forth between xsx (the controller comfort) and ps5 (cooler controller features... that may or may not get used later down the line). Visually I'm sure they will be pretty much if not exact parity for whenever the next gen patch launches, but I'm having a surprisingly hard time deciding. If it werent for the DualSense's haptic capabilities it would be xbox, easy decision (which I might have to make based on available HD space alone...). But man, Astro Bot is dope and I can REALLY see a game like Cyberpunk doing some really cool haptic shit if they take the time. Since DualSense is supposedly on Steam now too I'm not sure I'd rule out CDPJKT from actually updating it to use the features... dammit.

Probably gonna be playing this and Ghost of Tsushima concurrently. Prepared for some serious tonal whiplash as I can't imagine 2 AAA games more different in pretty much every aspect.
