Why is there controversy surrounding CD Projekt Red and Cyberpunk 2077?

CD Projekt Red has a history of transphobia. This is well documented at this point and not a matter of debate. Due to this context there is particular concern about transphobic or insensitive content in Cyberpunk 2077 itself, such as the decision to tie gender to voice in the character creator, and trans fetishization in illustrations in the game—and these are just examples from prerelease footage. Additionally, there have been concerns about racist imagery and stereotyping. This article goes into depth about some of these issues.

What incidents of transphobia have occurred surrounding the game and the company, and why are they hurtful?

This list will be updated over time as more examples come to light, especially as the game releases and more content is uncovered. If you wish to have something added to this list, please send me a DM and get my attention.

Why is ResetEra allowing an official thread for this game?

There has been a lot of discussion about whether there should even be an official thread for Cyberpunk 2077, and many points of view were considered for this decision. Ultimately, a thread like this can serve as a platform for minority concerns to be aired and discussed respectfully, and given appropriate attention. We've also heard from minority members, including some trans members, who have asked for a space where they can talk about the game without needing to worry about trolling and bigoted posting. We expect all posters in the thread to extend the consideration and empathy to give them that space. We will be moderating as strictly as necessary to make sure they do.

What can I do to help fight transphobia?

Transphobia exists in many aspects of our lives. From casual discrimination such as the continuous misuse of a person's preferred pronouns, to more serious ramifications such as housing being denied, legal rights being taken away, and being discriminated in the legal system. Every trans person either has experienced transphobia in their lives, or will experience transphobia at some point.

Moreover, transphobia is a systematic issue that is present in every level of our society. Politicians fight to take away our rights. Celebrities use coded language and religious justifications, if not outright hostility, in order to continue to deny our existence. Media continues to portray us as the butt of a joke, or acts like we're something to be fascinated by, rather than treated with respect.

Actions speak louder than words: Become active in your local politics, donate to transgender causes, stand up for these issues wherever they arise, and if you know transgender people in your life be there for them and support them.

Here are some pro-trans organizations around the world where you can make a donation and show your support
  • For those of you in the US, The Trevor Project is one of the leading LGBT organizations. They are dedicated to crisis intervention and suicide prevention for people who are in need of support, love, and care.
  • For those of you in the UK, Mermaids is dedicated to the support of transgender, non-binary, and gender-diverse children, young adults, and their families. They have been around since 1995, and have been one of the most vocal voices speaking out against transphobia in the UK, including showing the dangers that transphobia imposes upon our youth.
  • If you would like to donate to CDPR's native country of Poland, you can find the Trans-Fuzja Foundation website here. The Trans-Fuzja Foundation has been around since 2008, and is dedicated to the support of transgender people in Poland in many aspects of life and society, including politics.
We are your friends. We are your family members. We're your coworkers. We're the people you meet on the street. We're the essential workers who keep society running in a pandemic. We're everywhere. We're not some sort of freak or joke, and we're not going away.

I want to give major thanks to Uzzy for lending her talent, time, and effort in putting together graphics and material for this official thread. Without her, this would not have been possible on such short notice. I would also like to give a shout out and thanks to Kyuuji for allowing me to use images and links from her own thread for this posts.

Everyone asking about the Quality/Performance modes on PS5... I thought it was already well established that Series X backwards compatibility can make changes for the Series X version specifically, whereas the PS5 backward compatibility simply runs the PS4 Pro version at better resolution and framerate?

Is that not correct?

Oh there isn't even a performance/Quality selector? That sucks. Oh well, will play it now and then play again when the next gen patch releases.
Not yet unless they patch it. Who knows, Maybe there is some weird magic making the ps5 version dynamic 4k 60. It is weird atm, because the series X version currently has those sliding options. So the PS5 is left out. The only logical reason IMO is they figured out a way to maximize both FPS and resolution in the same mode on PS5 and called it a day. While some weird tech mumbo jumbo on the Xbox side perhaps only allowed them to choose between 60 and the 4k mode. I don't think this is a situation of the PS5 not being able to have 2 modes. Eithera patch is yet to be applied (likely), or there really is a backwards compat ps5 bug stopping it from working like the video/article suggests above. I don't know.

But if ps5 is defaulted at 60fps for this game, i can only assume they have maximized the visuals and graphics in that same mode.

I thought Series X BC worked similarly to PS5 BC in that, if the game had no fps cap, and/or dynamic resolution, it would just run at the upper limits of those. Anything extra would have to be patched in

The only unique thing Xbox BC has over PS5 is auto HDR.

edit: For games that don't have HDR already, to be clear.

I don't think so.

I think the assumption and execution should be that any Xbox One X features are possible on PS4Pro, via slider or default. Regardless of any other platforms, and then as an extension, these sliders or features benefit better on both platforms for nextgen, SX and PS5. The weird thing here is that one doesnt get that. Due to bug or lack of patch

I think you're conflating the fact that some one X games can run at 120fps on series X but that's just because technically the one X supported 120 to begin with

Ok, guess I misunderstood the discussion from a previous release last month. Thanks

It's kind of blowing my mind that people are saying this will run at 60fps on next gen consoles..at launch? Is that right?

Since this is the mega thread, and no thread exists for performance related questions:

Am I better off going with a PS5, 4K TV with 120hz and HDR available

or

PC, RTX 2080, i7 9th gen 8 core, 32 GB ram, with a 3440x1440 120hz monitor?

Many will auto say PC, but I find too often that I'm getting more bang for buck with PS5. I assume PS5 will be the game on high settings at a locked 60FPS with HDR and ray tracing ?

I'm unsure what my PC can realistically put out. High settings at 60FPS as well without HDR and 4k ?
The ps5 from what I know won't have any ray tracing until the patch next year and if BC mode is what the game runs at currently I doubt its on high settings since it's basically the ps4 pro version but at higher fps. My guess is probably medium settings and resolution wise its probably closer to 1080-1200p.

Your PC in this case until the patch comes out on the ps5 should take the easy W. 1440p DLSS, High settings and 60-80fps RT off. Also we cant forget the PC version will have the DRM removed, first day patch and updated drivers so theoretically you should be able to squeeze some more performance out of it from what's above.

From what I've seen, only performance, they're the same game, it just runs better on ps5. I imagine, lightning and other details will look even better on the future ps5 version they'll bring out

I see. Thanks for all the info.

This makes me believe that the PS4 Pro versions has an unlocked framerate while the Xbox One X has both an unlocked and locked perfomances modes.

I will say, Los Santos is one of my favorite locations in a video game even though there is barely any foot traffic (at least on PS3). It sucks there isn't much in Night City on consoles, but I'll be too busy looking at the other sights around the city.

Looks like a neon dressed theme park for larping set in an international airport terminal. So empty.

If I preorder digitally on the Series X will it download the Day one patch too? Or does that not actually download until unlock time?

Damn i really wish CDPR hadnt been so coy about the console version, i still dont have a PS5 so im having a hard time chossing between playing on a base PS4 or running on my machine (i think i can running at >60fps fine on 1080p medium). Any advice would be welcome, i would prefer not having double dip when i get my PS5 but if its unplayable on base PS4, i would have to stick with PC.

One thing this shows me is during the day there is more people and cars on the streets. Which is what I suspected earlier when people were talking about the density at night. In cyberpunk YOU DONT go out after dark unless you are getting into trouble or getting someone out of trouble.

Or it's more taxing on the hardware to render a higher number of dynamic light sources with vehicles and NPCs at night.

If CDPR is trying to get one thing right, it's the aesthetic, and I'm sure they'd have preferred having a shitton cars and people walking around at night to show off.

I Mean maybe? But having the streets full of cars at night would have been 100% lore breaking. Not a tiny break, but a massive break to the city itself.
