This doesn't sound that far away from what Splinter Cell was doing with it's PvE multiplayer. I'd give it a shot.

I love immersive sim games for many different reasons and one huge one is that they are singleplayer only and this helps those games tremendously
What I don't want a immersive sim game to be is being multiplayer so yeah, I'am not a fan of this future of that genre of games
In my mind, the next step is for them to be open-world because right now they are all basically hub-based ..
And Fallout New Vegas is mostly a RPG with some immersive sim elements and Cyberpunk 2077 has immersive sim style quest, mission and environment like design that offers many playstyles, ways and paths but still is mostly a open-world RPG..
So yeah, give me some story driven open-world immersive sim games like, right now please :)

Spector to me has earned at least a try no matter my apprehension level.

Uh, that's an Extraction Shooter, not an ImSim.

I mean, it could be good, but it feels like OtherSide is in "Please Investors and keep people on the payroll"-mode now. I mean, I'd imagine Spector would love to be focused on the Art side of things right now, but after System Shock 3 got lolnope'd by every publisher they approached...

I actually agree.

Game sounds cool. Like invasions in Souls but with more thought put into it besides just lagstabbing people trying to coop.

Ok where is my System Shock 3 ?

They sold their license for it to Tencent when they were unable to secure backing from any other publisher, and then shortly after Tencent booted them off development of it, and presumably Tencent shitcanned everything when it became apparent it couldn't be GaaS'd-Up combined with it being NightDive that actually owned the IP.

I remember one of Tencent's PR accounts going-loud about "We own System Shock now!" only for them to retract the statement when NightDive gave them a gentle tap on the shoulder to inform them of the contrary.

I didn't know this. This sucks.

That's one way to instantly make me lose interest in whatever you're making.

WAT? The next step for immersive sims is... multiplayer?

What about, open worlds with actual simulations and physics or whatever behind everything like the grass, wind, water, etc? NPCs including animals with their own "AI" routines, etc?

Sounds more like a side step to me.

Their game would sound a lot more interesting to me if they let players pose as one of the myriad NPCs they're talking about, instead of all of them being the "main character". Of course that sounds way too hard to do.

I'm willing to eat crow, but I 100% believe he won't be able to pull this off properly. It either won't be an immersive sim, or it will be a disaster. I simply don't think he has the funding/time to be able to iterate on this to the point of solving the obvious design choices that will suck the fun out of the game.
The issue with adding multiplayer is that the systems that you create can now be a negative very quickly based on how the other player decides to play. Multiplayer people want to win, and fair-play is rarely part of the equation.

If this was Co-op though... I would be interested again.

Please stop wasting resources into multiplayer games that will die within months of release :(

This just sounds like pr speak to sell his current game and not what an "actual" next step for the genre would be.

Wary, but interested.

I'd love more multiplayer RPGs, but where story and the multiplayer aspect come into play. A favorite example being how people take turns doing dialogue in Old Republic.

Underworld Ascendant was made by OtherSide, it's almost guaranteed to be a disaster tbh.

I hope it's not though; would love more mechanically dense coop games to play with my group.

Seems like it won't be stealing my time.

Look forward to the inevitable clarification that it can OF COURSE also be played as SP.

I agree with him, having a game which is essentially a sandbox of systems in a multiplayer envirnoment sounds awesome. All the interactions sound fun af!

Right?

The fact that so many immersive sims and especially immersive sim RPGs are fun are because you can get deeply engrossed and pardon my pun, "immersed" in them. Add in a multiplayer factor and this could be a very very addictive form of game.

I don't feel owed anything by him and I respect his knowledge/expertise. If he's confident in the idea I'd like to see him try to pull it off. I think this genre especially is fueled by overly ambitious ideas.

Also people looking for imsims there's a lot more to find in the indie space. I'm a big fan of Shadows of Doubt which is early access but still crazy good. Also been meaning to check out Ctrl Alt Ego which I've heard is excellent!

I think ImSim design could absolutely be used in an interesting way in a multiplayer context. Seems like a lot of people here just hate any form of MP on principle.

What separates Immersive sims from other first person games is the attempt to simulator what you see in your mind's eye while playing a tabletop RPG. Multiplayer makes sense. But going straight to competitive play is an odd choice.

Is that so wrong? Immersive sims are already kind of a niche genre so even if I had friends who play video games with me on a regular basis (which I don't), none of them would be interested in this anyways, and I sure as hell am not playing with strangers if I need to talk to or interact with them in any meaningful way. I've had enough people yell at me in Overwatch matches to never ever want anything remotely like that again. Plus, imagine sitting there reading some interesting email in a computer terminal while the rest of your party is hitting "skip cutscene" and yelling at you to move the fuck on, like all the co-op mission-based games I've played before. Yeah, sounds like an amazing experience to me!

So yeah, I'm not interested in this at all, and I sincerely hope there are other "next logical steps" for the genre that don't involve this.

This sounds cool. Not surprised to see people rejecting the idea outright. Par for the course, cause it's multiplayer. Not really enough info to understand what kind of structure it will actually have, but overall I am intrigued to learn more.
