I don't think there's anything wrong with a 360p port (at minimum) of an incredibly demanding game from this generation to what is essentially a portable device with the power of a last-generation console. The game looks great on the small screen.

It's clearly "up to snuff" for these two particular current gen AAA games, and I can imagine games with similar performance demands such as RE7 and Black Ops 4 could be "up to snuff," on the console as well.

Sure if you strip it down enough and make it run at extremely low resolutions. Also again let me remind everyone that these two games were on one of the best engines out there in terms of scaling, and it still produced these results. On most other engines they'd have to strip down even more, if it could run at all.

Joy Cons are perfectly fine, even goat controllers in my eyes. I've not played a single game and thought "wow these suck I need to use another controller".

I think it's interesting that they decided to keep almost all off the visual features of the Xbox One X and sacrifice the resolution instead. It's also pretty interesting for comparison with the original Xbox One as that ran in 720p iirc. As with most PanicnButton ports, I think they've done a fantastic job of posting it, but I also believe that it could be optimized to run at a more consistent 720p from here. Overall, it's an interesting tech showcase that hopefully will be matched and surpassed in the future.

What's the purpose of this comment? The switch is what it is and so is this version. There is no punching above weight, nothing that is really a surprise.
In context of the best looking fps handheld game, it also has the lowest resolution this whole gen, by quite a bit.
You can always try to give things context to make something look better than it might be but the hard facts are there: dynamic resolution down to 360p, 30fps limit but by no means a lock.

Similarly you can give no context at all to make it look worse than it is, like many are doing in this thread. The "it's punching above it's own weight" comment is based more on the fact that the game was never designed with the Switch in mind and while I disagree somewhat with how Panic Button have decided to do this port (same with what I would do with Doom, I would lower the amount of rendering techniques and increase the resolution personally) it is still quite impressive especially when it reaches the higher end of the dynamic resolution which it does often enough from my short time of playing with it so far.

I'm amazed that it seems few publishers are interested in tapping them - or similar port-specialist studios - for more last-gen to Switch ports. I would absolutely be interested in Mass Effect Trilogy for Switch, Deus Ex for Switch, Burnout Paradise for Switch. I'm playing Far Cry 2 now on 360-BC-on-One, 2 and 3 should both be within the Switch's capabilities.

If they can do an impossible port with some sacrifices of a current-gen title, they ought to be able to do a damn near perfect portable port of last-gen ones.
Apparently Panic Button got flooded with requests from publishers for Switch ports, but they had to turn them down.

Think they should try to give Switch owners the option between an average higher resolution/possibly steadier framerate and less demanding rendering techniques or vice versa. Console users are getting accustomed to this sort of simple option like the performance/quality modes on some home console games and even some last gen remasters. Then again I don't know, maybe some of these effects are essentially "free" for Switch with specialized bits of hardware/programming that couldn't be utilized to improve other areas, at least for these games.

Lol @ all the people annoyed that this game exists for Switch and even garners widespread acclaim not in a vacuum but actually compared to the other versions as well as what it offers a given player coming into a game to play it and have fun rather than just post on forums about it, as if they have to buy it or like they would suffer if they did, haha. But then before this new trend of "pro" console versions they were fine with playing vastly inferior versions of games that could look and run twice as good on a modest PC, no problem there apparently, but for the Switch to have that difference with other consoles it's such a huuuuuuge drawback, hahah.

RE7 is a dark game, and dark games do not mix well with blur. It would be a miracle if it happened but my eyes are already hurting just trying to visualize it.

what part of praising it for running on a handheld at 7 watts is blindly praising?

The Switch is a hybrid system, if you're only focusing on the handheld part of it it's impressive, if you bring the docked aspect of it in it's not. I don't have an issue with anyone posting the positives or negatives, I have an issue with people acting like others saying the negative aspects doesn't allow for discussion, but somehow only talking about the positives does. That's a joke and really annoying.

The biggest problem with Doom on Switch is the audio.

The df video doesn't mention anything about the sound quality for Wolf 2 so I'm guessing it doesn't suffer from the same compressed and flat issues as Doom' s port.

Wolf 2 isn't a game I'm looking yo play through again anytime soon but the port seems as good as anyone could realistically hope for.

another super impressive port, kudos to the folks at Panic Button. This isn't necessarily how I'd want to play it, but the option being there for handheld folks is great.

as they said, if you can play DooM or WF is any other machine, is a no brained to not play it there, but if your only console is a Switch, then rejoice, you got the game running.

so go by "but dock mode dont looks as good as it world on PXBONE OR PC" is a really meaning less argument

idTech 6 is a great engine but it's not magic; there's no insane difference between it and other well-optimised engines (such as the reEngine, the CoD engine and Ubisoft's Snowdrop Engine) that makes most, if not all other third party ports completely impossible. This is especially true considering Wolfenstein 2 runs at 810p on the OG Xbox One yet the engines I gave manage to run at 1080p or similar resolutions at 60fps.

RE7 is a dark game, and dark games do not mix well with blur. It would be a miracle if it happened but my eyes are already hurting just trying to visualize it.

It looks perfectly fine on my PSVR and that's with the pixels literally centimetres away from my face, I don't see how dark games need 1080p+ resolutions to work well. That and the game doesn't have as much detail as Wolfenstein 2 in practically any of its areas, and it runs at a higher resolution (1080p vs 810p) on the base X1 than Wolfenstein 2 does, so I doubt that a version with dynamic resolution would meet those lower bounds of resolution as often.

Can't help but feel like some people are a bit too.... snobby (?) about resolution. It's a handheld, whether it's docked or undocked the system itself is a tablet, no it won't look as nice as an XB1X, but ITS NOT ABOUT THE POWER with the switch. It's the ability to play it on the tv and keep playing if I go somewhere or just want to play it somewhere else. I love handhelds far more than a stationary console and any multiplat game that's on the switch I'll buy on the switch. Someone bought me this game for my birthday and I really like it and see nothing wrong with the visuals. Stop comparing a stationary console to a freaking handheld tablet, being docked doesn't suddenly make it a stationary console, it makes it a handheld tablet using an hdmi port.

The amount of work put into this port is insane. Kudos to Panic Button. Shame that it wasn't possible to get it to a higher baseline resolution, but given that this is a very competent version running on hardware that draws 7 watt of power is just outstanding.

The best part is, the people complaining the loudest never had any intention of playing the Switch version anyway

This is a Digital Foundry thread, where the entire point is to discuss the technical aspects of the game.

If all you care about is playing docked and portable then why are you here?

Switch owners are super defensive in DF threads. I take it you never ventured into a DF thread where PS4/Xbox One games got torn to shreds every time in comparison to the PC ports?

People are calling them wizards, but when you lower resolution this far, you're obviously gonna reach a playable state at some point for this kind of game

It's not that simple. Beyond the obvious difficulty of working with much less powerful hardware, there have apparently been a lot of clever little adjustments to get the game running on Switch. Check out the article or video.

For a handheld device, this is a great port that has the overall soul of the game. It's plays exactly like what you expect.

For a home console, it's a blurry mess with low resolution and performance overall and blown up on a good TV will highlight how weak the Switch really is.

End of the day, it's great for Switch owners who get to play the game, reduced heavily in terms of IQ and other features, but it's a solid title.

It's an impressive port, no doubt. I think for people interested in purely handheld gameplay, what's there is enough since it retains the overall experience. Just for example, John's point about texture detail vs. geometry, where the latter is retained and represents the game's big picture. That said, this is clearly pushing the limits of what is acceptable vs. what's doable.

We'll see how the game performs. I'm certainly curious as to what other ambitious projects Panic Button would be willing to take on in the future.

It's too blurry on portable version, defeating the purpose basically on why you should get it on switch (small screen + blurry mess). It's cool that they're able to port it though but that's it. Godbless the person who play this, the game is already infuriating due to level design (downgrade from the original) and low life, add blurry and 30 fps.

I would have preffered if some of those visual effects they talk about were cut to make way for better resolution, my main problem with Doom on switch was the bluriness while playing it, since that made it quite hard to focus on enemies and such, and it seems Wolf 2 will have the same problem unfortunately...

To be fair, it is mildly hilarious how a lot of the opinions from DF (the professionals who literally make this this their job) are talking about how impressive the port is, and how smartly it handles the drawbacks it needs to make, then all the people here who haven't played or seen the game in action themselves are like "ummm, actually no, this is terrible".

Except the technical aspects FOR THE SWITCH are great, panic button know what they're doing and DF themselves say it's a good port. People complaining about the technical aspects are complaining about the switch itself because it's not as powerful as a stationary console and never had any intention to get this port.

The biggest drawback from most is that it's really blurry, and for some people that's an acceptable deal breaker despite the overall impressiveness of it.

Well so is saying this is very impressive for a handheld, because then you're comparing it to what handhelds exactly? The 3DS and the Vita?

The truth is the Switch is it's own thing, acting like it's just a handheld or acting like it's just a console is reductive to any discussion. The only difference is that you're on opposite sides of the spectrum.

Heh, it's always funny scanning threads like these. I've been playing a lot of PSP games on Vita lately (including FPS' like Medal of Honor Heroes) so this looks absolutely great to me. Whenever I get a Swich, definitely gonna check this out.

Yeah I emulate a few PSP games on my Moto at 2x resolution and though those games are obviously dated in regards to detail, boy do they pop on a 5.5 inch display with a few more pixels.

I was just playing MoHH also... one of my favourites.

It sometimes goes to 360p?

I understand that everybody wants all the games on Switch, but dayum. (and I don't blame the developers, I'm sure they've done their best).
Yeah. Author kept repeating how impressed he was with this port, so I was kinda began agreeing with him, but then he showed this scene...

I bought it and playing it right now

It IS blurry but it also is the best looking potable shooter ever. Its nothing short of incredible to be able to play this game on the go....

I could play this game on my gaming pc or my ps4pro but no, I'm playing it on the switch while taking a dump or in bed before bedtime

We could just reduce it to the fact it's a less than 10w nvidia machine performing pound for pound in ways one wouldn't normally expect with such power. We have other nvidia architectures with much better graphics and cpus and sadly the games made with them aren't 15x-25x better in the looks sucking up much more power to do so.

Pure number crunching in gaming doesn't work the way some wish to peg it.

Great video and I agree on the point made, it's a damn impressive port considering the hardware. The comparison to Quake on the Saturn is very fitting. Both games were thought to be impossible on the targeted hardware, at least in any playable form, but both studios succeed in their goals. Panic Button have pulled out all the stops to port the game accurately and should be proud of what they accomplished here. I thought this would going to be a train wreck after the Doom port but the results are better than I expected.

The point of these ports is really to play them in portable mode. There's no reason to play DOOM or Wolfenstein 2 in docked mode if you have access to any other platform capable of running it. In portable mode, however, it's an entirely different story.

I agree with this. I play my Switch almost entirely handheld. I'm purposely waiting on games like this because I know I'll actually be able to play the game and finish it. I've got a PS4, so I'm perfectly fine making concessions like IQ, especially if it's more apparent in a mode ill hardly ever use.

To each his own, I compare it to both handhelds and consoles. I just don't see how stating just the negatives is any worse then stating just the positives. Doesn't make sense to call people out for that, when others are doing the same just on the opposite side.

I think it's more to do with the hot takes like OMG '360p resolution' when the video clearly doesn't say its 360p all the damn time. We see it dynamic resolution titles all the time. Some like to pick up on the lowest point and run with it.

This post is hilarious. The opinions of the port from DF is just that, opinions.

People are allowed to both be impressed with how many sacrifices were made to get the game running on Switch and to also not want to deal with those sacrifices.

I also thought this would run much worse than it actually does. Good stuff.
It did basically end up rendering at the resolution I thought it would run at though.
