Unless it becomes a platform in and of itself and not an accessory or add-on it will never become mainstream and it will be nothing but an enthusiast toy.

With that being said I absolutely think with advances in technology it can become a platform in and of itself. Either that or it will have to be packed in with every console.
It already is a platform in and of itself. Oculus Quest was the first of many still to come VR consoles.

As for consoles, Sony even put forth the possibility that at some point in the future, consoles may just be peripherals for VR HMDs.

My expectations are pretty high for games developed for SSD and 16+ gigs of ram.
Imagine a game like valves Portal, except instead of the portal being in a tiny room it can take you from one side of Breath of the Wilds map, to the other.. no that's thinking too small. 1 side of the portal is Breath of the wild, and the other side is Super Smash Brothers, open another portal and it can take you to Mario World. Its gonna happen.
That's the start of the metaverse. There are working small-scale examples of this, but the metaverse will take decades to mature and will be significantly larger than just the space of gaming. It's effectively the evolution of social networks and the web.

This is the next big leap, not just in terms of the end-user experience but game development itself. Some of the more rote tasks like asset creation could be partially automated, allowing development budgets to be used on something else, be it making more games or improving the areas where automation is less effective.

Absolutely, imagine the resources that would be saved if there was a true AI engine released.

People were saying the same stuff around the tail end of last gen too. We still have a long way to go, especially in the animation and physics department.
