You said he "failed upward." And now you're clarifying that you mean post-TLJ?
... You mean after he made the most profitable film of 2017? It's somehow failing "upward" to be given more movies?
No, that's wrong.
If we are going by profitability Jurassic World was a massive hit, which invalidates this entire argument.
What I was trying to say was that the RJ getting a trilogy was somewhat adjacent to this, but I could have worded it better. "Failing Upwards" specifically was meant for CT.
I did say "to a lesser degree", maybe I should have added a "much" not to get everyone so riled up about it. And there was no possible way that TLJ would not be extremely profitable as the follow up to TFA. It would have been even if we had CT directing TLJ.
What I was trying to allude to was that it was supposed to be a slam dunk, and everyone including me expected it to be much better than TFA after all the hype pre-release. Everyone was saying stuff like "now we got the nostalgia stuff out of the way, now we can get started for real!" before it came out. I'm not saying star wars is ruined or any of that crazy bullshit, but this current trilogy has lost some momentum due to it. There is no doubt about that. This narrative that it's some masterpiece that only SW fanboys hate because of their reasons isn't true. The general consensus seems to be lukewarm/good not great. Some like it, some don't, but at the very least it didn't manage to build enough momentum towards episode 9. Again, not terrible but not enough to get handed a trilogy. That is my OPINION and of many others, not only crazy fanboys.
(Them giving DB Weiss And Benioff a trilogy? Something star wars? is much MUCH worse though, and reeks of "GoT is a huge hit! Let's get those guys!" that development is much more worrying)
And as I said before, I only happened to mention this shit in passing, I wasn't trying to make some huge statement, I PERSONALLY thought it reminded me SOMEWHAT of RJ. But I should have known better than to even mention anything related to TLJ. Might as well start talking about Pineapples on pizza or Israel.
