Title definitely did not match what I was reading. LOL

But all jokes aside, I'm glad there was no jail time. Tired of folks thinking they can say whatever to us and reap zero consequences.

The old man's consequence was falling down and hitting his head. Tough break, old man. The future is now.

Eh more like old dude fell to his death after getting clocked in the head
Yeah, title paints the manager in a really bad light. I was expecting more of a beat down than one punch.

Title should really be "racist dies after punch knocks them over" or something…they're really painting the manager to be super violent here which isn't the way it seems this story should be being portrayed…

Can't fault someone for swinging at a blatant racist. Them's fighting words, as they say.
Guess I'll just say it's sad that any of this happened and I'm positively surprised by the the legal response not being as unjust as I expected it to be.

And yeah, "punching to death" absolutely evokes a completely different and much more severe image than what actually seems to have occurred.

Classic 'stand your ground' defense... I'm shocked that it worked out for a POC in Florida.
This had nothing to do with stand your ground laws, unless I'm missing substantial mentioned in another article? Manager got let off because he hadn't initiated the situation or clearly intended to kill with just one punch, the victim wasn't at all sympathetic due to a variety of factors, and his team managed to get him a solid plea deal for a less severe charge and sentence.

I've heard way too many "hurts donut" jokes in my life to ever think about messing with a baker.

I really hope the manager is ok and doesn't have super sore knuckles or anything.

This is one those situations where I don't agree with what he did but I understand why he did it.

Thread title is a bit gnarly. "Punches customer to death" I thought would be a fucking beatdown but it sounds like just a punch after being provoked and then a dodgy fall. I guess that's why the dude's not in jail.

Yeah, the article's title made it sound like there were multiple punches as opposed to the old dude getting hit once for being racist and then dying from hitting the floor.

Single punch resulting in unintended death, and they still used "punches to death" for the article title

Hmm, I wonder why

I'm weirded out by how quick people are to celebrate the old dude dying in some of the other replies in this thread though. Just a lotta posturing from those uninvolved when I'm pretty sure the subject of this case likely wishes he hadn't ever thrown that punch, and it was absolutely the wrong thing to do in that situation.
You say there's a lot of posturing but then invent your own fanfiction about how the manager feels to justify your own discomfort with people not caring that a racist died, while further going on to say that punching the man was the wrong thing to do. Please do tell us Blacks how to better deal with racism.

Hmmmm had races been moved around I'm sure the article title would have been around the tone of "Adult male passed on due to altercation related accident after verbally assaulting restaurant manager"

One punch homicide. It happens way, way too often.
The head hitting on the floor (especially the back) is even more dangerous than the punch. Try to catch someone if you knock them out. Or punch them in the gut instead. Or don't punch at all. Just walk away. Sparring in the ring is way more fun than bare knuckle fighting anyways.

If someone is so repugnant that people celebrate their death, that's sort of on them. It's not on everybody else to try to be sad about it, regardless of the dead dude's behavior.
It just feels very....off? Like I'm sure everyone in this thread would be shitting their pants and crying if they clocked that old dude and killed him in one punch, terrified their life was effectively over because they made a mistake, so coming in here and celebrating it when that manager very likely feels completely different about his own actions seems tasteless to me. Like would any of these people react the same and be cheering him on for killing the guy in person? I wouldn't be, I'd feel that would just be downright disrespectful to whatever he was likely going through.

Like I'm not asking anyone to have sympathy to the racist (pedo) scumbag who died but it just seems weird to be trying to act tough and celebrate this situation when it isn't really a winning one for anyone actually involved. That man is gonna carry this for the rest of his life, and as others have pointed out is very likely still going to face further legal battles if the dead guy has any living family. I doubt any celebrating he's doing is going to be for the guy being dead instead of his life not (definitely) being ruined for it.

I am suppose to feel sympathy for a racist pedophile/sex offender? GTFO with that silly ass statement.

Victim in fatal Tampa Dunkin’ punch case identified

Vonelle Cook is the man who was punched by a Dunkin’ manager after calling him a racial slur, authorities said. The manager has been charged with manslaughter.
this is the feel good story I needed today. I hope Corey Pujols isnt feeling too guilty about what happened and if he is I hope he finds peace with it one day.

It's unfortunate for everyone involved that the man died, but from the limited info available in the article (and the other one it links) that sentence sounds largely appropriate. Manager likely wasn't trying to kill anyone and I doubt there's much worry of a repeat offense in the future, glad that this wasn't met with decades of imprisonment for the pure sake of punishment and that rehabilitation and common sense won out.

There is nothing, absolutely nothing wrong with people being glad that such a vile person died, considering such people often get to act this way with impunity, and that the manager who punched him didn't get the book thrown at him as expected.

You are right that the manager may regret his actions since that one fleeting choice will disrupt his life for years. But maybe he doesn't. And it still doesn't change the fact that the old guy had this sort of thing coming to him for being so stubbornly awful. You complain about posturing, but that's what your post comes off as.

The charges are too strict for what happened. Hopefully home arrest reduction. He was a victim who defended himself.

Not sad for the death sorry. Racist pedophile won't be able to harm anyone else anymore. If you are sad, be sad that the US allows someone to live like that their whole life thinking there's nothing wrong.

Police said Cook enticed teen boys into his home with comic books, video games and candy. He then used the boys for his pornographic fantasies, including filming himself performing sex acts with a 16-year-old boy, police said. At the time of his arrest, Cook told reporters that he was not guilty, saying there was no evidence the photographs were child pornography.

Cook was sentenced in 2008 to five years in prison for a range of charges including lewd and lascivious battery on a child, using a child in a sexual performance and several counts of unlawful sex with a minor. He was released in 2011.

Jesus fucking christ. Piece of shit only did 3 years too.

"Cook was arrested in 2006 after police raided his home at the time, on 19th Street near University Mall, and found surveillance cameras mounted around a bed, homemade videos and DVDs and boxes of photographs of nude young men and boys, according to news reports at the time."

Corey should get some thanks for getting us rid of some filth.
