Doom is still legitimately great to this day. Hell, it's aged a lot better than most console games of the era.
legitimately great gameplay? we'll have to disagree.

Ooh, yeah get Modern Warfare in there. It basically declare the end of dominance from games like Halo and more arcadey shooters.more important games? halo3 (and cod4) brought online gaming to the mainstream. theres a shout to halo2 but the og xbox didnt have the worldwide reach of the 360. halo3 sold 15 million copies. and that was just on one console. cod4 sold 16 million but that included pc and ps3. halo3 dominated xbox live game with the most play time. they launched with over a million people playing at the same time. had some insane attach rate, like 50% of people were playing halo3 at launch. and there was some insane stat of something like a billion games of halo3 were played of the span of the next 5 years. halo3 was the catalyst for ms to 'win' last gen. at least early on. its arguably the most important game of last gen.
There are more important games that deserve to get in way way way before Halo 3.
Guys, it's not HOTTAKE day.wolfenstein and doom arent 'great' games at this point though. theyd be rejected for the same reasons pong got rejected.
Those posters aren't even certified ramen masters smhIt's HOTTAKE day every day when it comes to arguing for games on an imaginary list for a pantheon that doesn't really mean anything, what are you talking about
Because of what Halo 2 did for console online MP, I'm inclined to agree. And also Halo's aiming had repercussions that go beyond its FPS genre.I personally think halo has more impact on the industry at large than doom does
Yeah that's a great point!Doom's coding alone made a lot of games possible. Its impact on the industry is simply ridiculous.
By that logic then does Unreal since the unreal engine is still impacting games being made to this day?Doom's coding alone made a lot of games possible. Its impact on the industry is simply ridiculous.
I agree. Doesn't mean we can't discuss influence though. And also the HoG has made it clear that's what matters most anyway.Influence =/= Greatness
Unless y'all wanna say Pac-Man is better than TLOU, P4G, Galaxy, BotW, etc

Maybe, though it's not the same thing. It's not about reusing the engine to other games/purposes, it's about how it was done. Doom wasn't even 3D, yet created a type of 3D gameplay and was used for other first person games in actual 3D. It paved way to other games to render graphics and made possible (or viable) stuff that wasn't before. It made FPSes a thing not only because of how it played, but because of how it was made and designed.By that logic then does Unreal since the unreal engine is still impacting games being made to this day?
I know this isnt a popular opinion but i would rate pacman higher then those games yes.Influence =/= Greatness

Yes, yes, no, noInfluence =/= Greatness
Unless y'all wanna say Pac-Man is better than TLOU, P4G, Galaxy, BotW, etc
There is a tiny bit of correlation though. I think it's important to measure both, specially since influence is also a little bit more objective. Personally, I think the game design of TWEWY is essentially flawless, and the game as whole is one of my greats. If I was in a HoG induction and had to say TWEWY "greater" than SotN though, I would not, even if I think SotN is more flawed. The care put into SotN's craft and its importance to the industry are undeniable and very important to recognize and celebrate.Influence =/= Greatness

Not gonna lie...D&D getting shut down was great because it sets a precedent that non-videogames won't be voted in.
that's a weak thumb45°
at his time, sureInfluence =/= Greatness
Unless y'all wanna say Pac-Man is better than TLOU, P4G, Galaxy, BotW, etc
at his time, sure
tlou is gonna get surpassed by tlou 2, what's the point in admitting it on the HoG to take it out next year when tlou 2 is out?
nonono, don't you see, newer games are always betterWhat? Games don't get taken out of the hall if they're surpassed, and you can't leave a game out because you think another game (that's not out yet and he haven't seen gameplay of) might be better.
IMO, the best moment of that Halo stream was when they changed to DK:TF lolHalo stream was aight. I didn't grow up playing a bunch of Halo so the nostalgia didn't really hit me, but it was still a jolly stream. Simple thing they need to improve on is consistently labeling who is who when multiple Allies are playing at a time. For some reason they only did this like 25% of the stream.
I don't even like TLOU but yeesh this is one hot take too hot even for me.
Is it? Pac-Man has been a hit for 37 years, TLOU isn't 5 yet ᖍ(ツ)ᖌI don't even like TLOU but yeesh this is one hot take too hot even for me.
I don't think this would work in their context. Ocarina of Time is the game that put the standards for a 3D action games. Ocarina 3DS is the game for people who want to relive or imagine what that game was at the time, it's not notable in any way even if it's the better version. As I said one time, bring all versions of a game. Ocarina 3DS is better in every way except if you are a speedrunner who wants to finish the game in 20 min.
It's true. Also, Joel and Ellie aren't in Smash so clearly not a HoG worthy candidate yet.Is it? Pac-Man has been a hit for 37 years, TLOU isn't 5 yet ᖍ(ツ)ᖌ
If I had said Pac-Man DX I might be more open to this :P
