The government has lost its way, and people just let it happen, especially after shit went crazy after 9/11.

The First Amendment does not simply say "Freedom of Religion", it says "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". The Constitution's imperative is a neutral stance on religion, but the people not only do not enforce it, we let people actively cheat it.

We have cults openly taking over the conservative side of the government, whether they're evangelicals or nazis. They do not respect the rules, especially not for outsiders.

This was the Republican strategy going back to the fall of Nixon. Wooing the evangelical Christian right, or the "silent majority" as they were called at the time, worked and led to the Reagan years, so the Republicans continued doubling down on it, not realizing what the logical end result of whipping (let's be honest) crazy people into a frenzy and handing them the reins of power would be. And here we are, the magical thinking inherent to the demographic in question having pushed the position of the GOP so far to the right that it has easily embraced naked racism, misogyny, and fascist ideology in a startlingly smooth motion. The truly scary part is that the Republicans clearly don't have any better ideas, so apparently they're just going to ride this nuclear hate bomb to the ground rather than back off and risk complete party dissolution. If they can't have America, nobody can.

it's not about religion

it's about hate

the religion is just a front for the hate

At a certain point it's a distinction without a difference.

It's disgusting and I'm sick of this bullshit. Why don't you just try being a decent person on this earth? Seriously, what would Jesus think of modern American Evangelicals?
He would think very poorly of them.

Maybe even more crucially, what would modern American Evangelicals think of Jesus if he lived today? My guess is he would be called a socialist, communist, open border loving libtard or something like that.
Disagreeing with Jesus to own the Libs

Religion is supremacists by nature in most incarnations.

Combine that with racism and privilege and here we are.

Religion requires you to put aside reason in exchange for believing unsupported things. Apply that to politics and you can believe anything

I wish the Rapture happened now. Willing to bet a lot of the evangelicals will not be ascending anytime soon.

Evangelicals worship a false idol, and represent said idol with Supply-Side Jesus.

They are hateful, cruel people who value their own wealth and success over everything else, and attribute said wealth and success to their being "blessed", while those who face misfortune and struggle in this unfair world are disregarded by God, and not worth caring for. They appeal to vices like racism and personal wealth, regarding them as justifiable and righteous, instead of virtues that the real Jesus of Nazareth would've espoused.

Evangelism isn't "destroying" America. They already did. We just need people to realize that we can put the pieces back together.

As an outsider, it does puzzle me how much your nation clings to the bible in the realms of politics.

Modern American Evangelicals have very little to do with the Bible. And I don't mean that in a "Jesus is a commie" sense, I mean theologically speaking, a large number of modern American evangelicals are incredibly ignorant of the basic theological tenants of the evangelical tradition.

'Evangelical' in America is a political and cultural descriptor long before it's a religious descriptor.

Like, the idea that prosperity gospel heretics now get lumped in as 'evangelicals' is something that was unthinkable 30 years ago.

American white Catholicism seems exclusively about talking down to others. Nothing more. A bastardised interpretation where they drop and the "do good onto others" stuff and just whatever they can to justify their own prejudiced views.

catholicism or christianity? dunno why you'd leave out the largest christian denomination in the us

I'm not going to get too deep in to it as I honestly don't have the knowledge to do so, but my point wasn't really just about a specific branch or party or anything. More about the whole thing overall. I realsie the thread is about evangelicals though.

Like, would Obama still have won if he was openly atheist? Would he even won the Democratic nomination?

Nobody I know gives a shit about that stuff here in the UK, hell, being a bit too openly religious will actually turn people off. From what we see from this side of the pond though, it seems the opposite, even for the not crazy old white republican folk.

religion is the easiest tool to control the most amount of people. Republicans don't use it because they believe in it, they use it because it works.

It is the GOPs single biggest inroad to poor whites. Without it they have next to nothing to offer.

I agree.

I grew up going to church and youth group. Most of the people I grew up with who I thought were generally good people, are big Trump supporters and are seemingly ok with all the anti-Christ shit that Trump does.

This is literally the entire thing with this country. They've fucked over politics and most everything else the entire time while being entirely hypocritical. They even rewrite history to make themselves sound integral to the nation ((e.g. the Mayflower and its 102 passengers, only 37 of whom were Pilgrims/Puritans, being entirely associated with that group); also this is a far too much of a thing in general here with many downright lies taught as history in our school system (such as much of the Columbus story, most of the story behind the construction of the Panama Canal, Pocahontas and John Smith, and far too many more examples)).

I can sorta undertake the pro life deal. If you are "Christian."

But fanaticism about guns and hating other people for being different is insane.
Exactly. If they were against abortion but also for gun control and for universal health care they would at least be congruent and consistent and I could respect that. They're not.

They're not pro life. They're just anti abortion.

It's what the country was founded upon... despite these same politicians who use it ultimately taking a big dump all over the actual values at its core at some point or another. People love talking about God in that way without ever actually practicing or even talking about the important aspects of their religion: the whole treating people humanely, helping the poor, and not being the worst humanity has to offer...

I recently had a discussion with my die-hard conservative Christian Republican parents about LGBTQ rights and abortion. Rather than having a secular discussion on the matter, like why they feel the need to police people they have no relation to, they rebutted with biblical nonsense to justify their views.

Bottom line... people that are that steeped in religion will never see the world through the eyes of non-religious folks. They're beholden only to God, they view their take on His word as law, and see this life as temporary. That last bit is really the most frustrating part as they're just making the world a shittier place by concerning themselves with other people's affairs instead of minding their own business until rapture/death.

As far as I'm aware, the United States of America wasn't founded as a Christian nation. The aspect of Christianity bled into the fabric of our society in the 50s when there was a shift in ideals to set us apart from the "commies"... that's when "under God" was added to the Pledge of Allegiance and "In God We Trust" became our national motto.

To be fair, the Catholic Church does do a whole lot of outreach all around the world. Even the American Catholic Churches jump in. I wouldn't lump them in with the Evangelicals tbh.

I'm non-religious, but I do know that even though Catholicism is plagued by a bunch of rapists, there's also a lot of good stuff they're doing to help the poor in America, and around the world.

Evangelicals seem to be around to fuck everything up.

That's actually a genius question.
Evangelicals have already made Jesus into a white , militant , abortion fighting , self made alpha male so they don't give a shit who he was accurately. And they looove the old testament with all its thou shalt not lie with a Man, spare the rod spoil the child , wrath of god bullshit . So they just conveniently ignore any of the parts where Jesus said anything else

Might as well add in the world, they've imported their insane worldview to other parts of the world where they can influence politics with more ease.

A person who has decided to unwaveringly buy into their religion has chosen to forgo critical thinking. They simply can't be talked to.

I think people are being unfair to cast a blanket judgement for all Evangelicals

I know religious people who vote Republican some times. Calling them evil is a strong statement. People should understand their point-of-view. They are afraid of immigrants, people-of-color, LGBT changing things. The transgender bathroom issue makes them irrationally scared of pedophiles harming their kids. Or immigrants moving in and raising crime. Its all stupid. They're being manipulated by conservatives, not because they enjoy seeing others suffer. I'm sure many do it for the liberal tears as well, but most don't vote with evil intent.

Their lack of critical thinking and refusal to overcome their ignorance make them prone to do evil things, what's the difference?

So they're dumb bigots? That's not a valid excuse for anything.

There is a division between the sides because of how gross and closed minded that group is. They've lost our respect.

They actively vote against human rights for people that are different from them. Is that not evil?

We're supposed to be. But if someone thinks an all powerful omnipotent being controls whether or not you spend eternity burning in hell, then all other considerations will be secondary.

This, and I would be the same way if I were a theist who believed in that type of deity
