GTO has an arc where he enters a student in a bikini contest and then takes the rest of the class on a field trip to that bikini contest and then sells photos of his student in a bikini.

But it also has an arc where he arm wrestles 100 guys in a row including Jason Voorhees and that was way cool when I was 16.

Hey remember how "fun" it was to see people coming out of the woods to defend the depth and literary merit of "Goblin Slayer" and "Shield Hero" and how dear anyone suggest there was anything sexist or racist in them? HERE WE GO AGAIN!

I came across this... work's manga adaptation (Why yes it DID start out as web novel how did you guess?) years ago and noped out after the first chapter.

I'm going to give a quick summery of what I read I've heard about some later things that are even worse, really the very beginning is more than enough. Putting this in Spoilers because no one should a word of this by accident.

So our MC was healer in party, and healing magic is viewed as near useless so he was used and abused, including being drugged and raped, including by one of the guys on his team, who if I remember correctly was black, because of course But after his team saves the world the MC discovers that healing magic is the most powerful magic of all. Mostly by abusing BS to define anything he wants to do as healing. So he starts off by rewinding all of time back to before the adventure happened. Because you see he's returning the world to a previous state which is what healing does.

He keeps his memories because he was the caster, or something, I don't care enough to look this up. He find the princess of his group kicks her and her guards asses with healing magic, and then rapes her. And then brainwashes her with healing magic giving her a new super submissive personality, though I think hints he left the original buried in there so he can bring it back out at the apex of his revenge to completely break her, and then uses healing magic to forcefully give her an all new appearance.

I've already seen the "Well he's doing it to horrible people so just an eye-for-an-eye situation and not that bad." defense being deployed.
I looked up some pages from google and Jesus Christ.

It's basically incel revenge fantasy porn. WHY THE FUCK IS THIS GETTING ANIMATED?!

Are we gonna have people recommending and defending this? This is basically a mean-spirited fantasy hentai. It makes Goblin Slayer look fucking benign in comparison.

I think this might still be one of their more extreme takes on it since

it ends up with the 10-year student and her 30-year old teacher all but saying out load that they are agreeing to get married when she 's older.

From what I've heard even the Japaneses anime toned it down to "one sided crush" and made the teacher oblivious to said crush.

It is interesting, in a morbid kind of way that there are a lot more "older-guy/younger-women age gap romances in manga, and that the gap tends to be bigger then it would in the smaller number of "older-women/younger-guy" situations and the older-guy ones have a higher chance of staying together.

Almost as if society is more comfortable potential power imbalances if it favors the guy and not the women....

There's a manga about a female teacher and her student (Sensei wa Koi o Oshie Rarenai), though it's supposed to be all fluff and they promised to wait until the student is of age, it still makes me uncomfortable because 1) I'm a teacher too 2) the relationship feels like a time bomb and it's grooming no matter how you look at it. Something like Watashi no Shounen is also eh, maybe twice eh because the age gap is disgusting. But in general yeah, the combo of older guy/younger woman definitely dominates and the degree of yuck depends on the demographics.

Sensei wa Koi o Oshie Rarenai also has MC's younger sister who dates a divorced man with a kid which is nice and all but I struggle to think of a single mother being portrayed in the same positive way. And by positive I mean that there is no shortage of single moms in the Japanese media who remarry/date but most of those appear in... not really appropriate settings.

That teacher-student talk reminded me - thoughts on Great Teacher Onizuka?
I tried to get into it back in the day because of its popularity, but I dropped it pretty quick.
There was a lot of "trying to look girls up the skirt" stuff going on, and they played heavily with the "easy to get sexy teenageschoolgirl" trope.
Was I just off to a bad start or is the complete series invested with this? I never digged further. <.<

Instead I watched Gokusen, what's a different take on the unconventional teacher theme.
Daughter of a Yakuza head just wants to live a normal life as a teacher of a class, full of troublemakers. What they don't expect is her being able to fight back.
While there was still a bit of shipping going on in the fanbase, that one of the students has a crush on her, I didn't really see it in the anime. And I can't remember any creepy stuff.
For Gokusen, i think in the book she ends up marrying one of the kids

Yeah don't look up this manga people. I looked at the 1st two chapters and then another random one. It just get worse as it goes along it seems.
How the fuck is this getting an anime?

So the MC changes a guy to a woman? And uses some spell to have his companions rape him and then burns them alive as they continue.

How is this popular?

This shit is getting an anime before Dungeon Meshi.

We live in a world where this is getting an anime before Dungeon Meshi.

IS there no semblance of quality control anywhere? Did no one in the entire project go: "Huh, this seems like a bad idea."

I really liked to read Until Death do us Part. Drawing was nice, and I was digging the blind samurai MC.
But after a while it got far too convoluted, and I began to just skip through it. Anyway, in the end, he marries the young girl as soon as she is out of school.
I didn't know how I should feel about that.

The Wife Husbandry ending, this trope is becoming annoying

Been in Japan for over a week now and advertisements are generally heavy with Moe girls (sorry didn't get a chance to take picks of them). Their not sexualized in any way but it a little weird in the characters endorsing the famous locations or products instead of having the product speak for itself.

Yeah, mascot culture is huge over there, and for small towns and cities Otaku pilgrimages has been a big boon to them in the past decade. Just shows how much of a spending power otakus have for them to overtake normal tourism in some places, like with Nuzamu with Love Live Sunshine, and Washinomiyamachi with Lucky Star.
It has gotten to the point where anime is made specifically to try to bring people in their cities as shown with that awful Tenchi (remake?) anime, and more recently Zombie Land Saga. As for plastering them in Windows 10 boxes, and the like, well they are easy eye catches that easily catches people attention in, and brings up conversation when they are show off. Take that Toyota advertisement where they created over 40 girls each being based on a different car part, or when Gamefreak turn all the Eeveelutions into cutoe bishonen boys.

More thoughts on Japan soon after I recover from jet lag but it was interesting to see how many female fans were around Anime shops and everyone were pretty normal people and not the stereotypical otaku but people who enjoy shows and wanted characters goods or figures. It was a good way to remind myself of the wider audience and not the troubling hand full of fans that look to spout nonsense.

So ive watched interviews with monster girls and caught up with the manga. With that i just have to say im legit surprised how idk... Not gross this is? I heard of it a while ago and dismissed it as some monster musume garbage but its a really wholesome series that has a damn succubus written with more care than a large percent of normal anime girls. Its sad that i am surprised that the MC teacher isnt a huge creep and is insanely likeable (also ripped prof best prof).

Glad you liked it. I was in the exact same situation. Figured it was related to Monster Musume and was just fetish material. But I think someone in the other thread (when it derailed and talked about anime) said it was good like Centaur's Life, I gave it a shot and enjoyed it. I hope. it gets another season. Seemed to end on a sort of cliffhanger with the new girl.

It's funny I was just thinking about this because Funimation just licensed this.

How yall feel about beastars?

With Haru and Juno in particular?

Lotta layers there with Juno and Haru actually being the more sexually dominant characters in the show/manga with taking lead over their own sexuality.

It's interesting to see adult relationships explored in this media that doesnt make it feel like cheap fetish fodder.

That image....Jesus, Also funny thing about the new girl is she's anime original. I read the manga from where the anime left off and she's nowhere to be seen ;). The manga introduces a completely different new demi girl.

Can there be a show about monster girls where the characters aren't overly sexualized -and- the girls actually look like monsters? I like Interviews with Monster Girls, but the girls themselves look way too human. I'd argue even Centaur's Life doesn't go far enough.

"Monster Girls" is a fetish trope tho...

There are subversions of the trope in other stuff but the whole concept of "Monster Girls" is all about "Yo...I wanna fuck that dragon...but give it tiddies"

What I really want is a good gender-reversed Beauty and the Beast-type story. The themes/messages of the typical Beauty and the Beast story would probably have to be changed, but I'd still like to see what could be made from it.

Id love to see some examples of that actually....

I've tried, but I haven't really found anything in officially-released fiction. The most I've been able to find is gender-bent fanart of existing properties:

Eh, thats just making the beast "cute"

The whole theme of Beauty and the Beast was about how a handsome young man was nothing more than a selfish animal on the inside and the curse reflected that physically.

It would be pretty simple to apply the same concept to female character as well, but I've never seen the concept explored from that side.

That's cause B&B is very heavily gender coded. It's the same reason most fairy tales have a knight or prince saving a princess or why most horror films star a female protagonist. The roles are too steeped in gender.

For manga, the closest I can think of is Kaiju Girl although that is a Shojo manga. Other than that, I've heard there's some decent yoai manga in the vein of B&B.

In broader media, maybe Miss Martians subplot in the first season of Young Justice? That's about it.

I'm currently on chapter 5 of Beastars. Once I read a bit more, I'll definitely discuss my opinions of the women.

How is the Gridman anime?
From a feminist perspective specifically? I don't remember anything particularly problematic, and while there was an episode involving most of the cast in swimsuits it was incredibly tame by anime standards.
it has a couple of major female characters who contribute to the plot significantly, although the actual fighting is pretty much only the dudes.

On a more general level I'm going to put it in my top 25 of the decade, easily. It's probably the best thing Trigger have made, especially coming immediately after the disastrous Darling in the Franxx.

I'm not sure how much it helped, but the lead writer is more of a Tokusatsu writer than an anime writer, having worked on a lot of Ultraman series before.

These are the most traditional toku fights. They've animated it so it feels like the monsters have the same kind of weight and movement as rubber suits do, it's really fun to watch.

So I am nearly finishing Black Lagoon.

Bro. This is the most 90s feminist anime. It is, boiled to the core, "look how much ass these women kick! AND LOOK HOW BIG HER TITS ARE/GOOD HER ASS LOOKS IN JEAN BOOTY SHORTS!!!!"

Dont remind me of the known Gintama meme....

Anyway, I am watching 2 80s anime more popular in Europe (no need to mention Japan) ,directed by Hidoshi Shirata. Hello Sandybelle and Step Jun. Toei back then was active in some of the very best shojo titles. Had watched some episodes of the former when I was very young. It is one of the few original shojo, not based on any manga and the last purely shojo title by Toei. .

Shares similarities with Candy, but it takes place in Scotland and England. While today it is more likely to find shonen titles resembling some 70s-80s series, shojo landscape is completely different and such approaches are very rare, almost extinct or rather transferred to magical girl genre. Even Ashita no Nadja resembled it but with less dramatization yet it flopped, leading to the creation of Pretty Cure.

This sounds like someone's messed up D&D campaign.

It's also insulting as an FFXIV fan.

Our healers can set off literal mini-nukes in battle.

Take one look at Y'shtola (the most prominent healer character in the story) and try and tell me you'd fuck with that.

So I've been getting into Spy x Family lately and on a character design level it's pretty good. It's helped by the Cold War not-Berlin setting which means everyone wears somewhat sensible clothing. Only risqué outfit is Yor's assassin dress but compared to like 90% of anime it's pretty tame. Also has the smuggest faces in manga.

The weird way that Nekopara seems to be positioning itself as just a cutesy catgirl maid thing or "not porn" is what gets me. If it was just some niche porn thing it would be easier to ignore but it's obviously trying to attain somewhat more mainstream success thanks to kickstarters and switch releases and tv shows.
Other visual novels like Fate or Key's stuff could drop the porn and succeed thanks to having something else going on, but Nekopara seems like a world built entirely around "what if you had sexy cat-sister-maid-slaves".

I looked down into the abyss that is Nekopara and turned around as quick as I could. The only thing more discomforting than the show was the fanbase I've seen defend it on Reddit and Twitter. There is a darkness to this show.

Want to bring up BOFURI: I Don't Want to Get Hurt, so I'll Max Out My Defense
It a simple show of a girl playing a MMO her way, dumping all her points into def. What makes it fascinating is that it having fun with it premise from how Maple was able to gain passive skills from getting hit by different attacks and getting lucky drops of rare items. It the thing that most MMO show or isekai shows are missing on is fun with how silly the world can be. The only other show that does this is That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime.

Now I'm curious on how So I'm a Spider, So What? does?

It was a fun and entertaining anime with an interesting plot. It's like isekai but they're not actually stuck in the new world, which makes it refreshing.

Be warned though, there's this one hyper sex lolita girl appearing later in the show. I hate her.

The only MMO anime I liked was Net-juu no Susume which rly captured the feeling of early F2P games. There's a lot of anime where the MC take the game too seriously or just isekai.
