Kind of a random question but I remember there being a 9999 damage cap on the old PS2 version. Am I mistaken or was that just... always the case? But anyway, I'm asking because someone mentioned to me in passing earlier (on a bus, actually) that in The Zodiac Age you can break the damage cap in several ways. What sorts of ways?

If any of this doesn't make sense (I haven't played XII in an eternity) just let me know!

There's no damage cap anymore. There's no special way to break it, it just doesn't exist, so enjoying seeing those massive numbers! Your black mage will definitely be posting some huge numbers late game (and even earlier depending on set up.)

Bought this on Switch. First time playing it and I'm loving it so far, except the forced d-pad in menus. My left button stopped working when i was trying to fix the joy-con drift, so i am struggling a bit...

In the original game I believe only Summons and Quickenings could break the damage limit but starting from IZJS and now Zodiac Age, anything strong enough can do it. Stuff like Scathe + Faith, Excalibur + White Robes, Berserk + Bravery, etc., are some easy ones. If you're super high level and have good gear tons of stuff will break it.

That's so badass! Thanks!

Just curious, how far into the game is the second job unlock? I am approaching that part and I glanced at a walkthrough to gauge how far along I am, and based on how the guide is laid out it looks like nearly halfway, but it really doesn't feel like I've already played half of this game.

I'm just curious because I am so fucking thirsty for another FF7 playthrough lately but I definitely need to finish this before I do that lol

Maybe a little bit before halfway of the story... right at the end of the Tomb of King Raithwall? Keep in mind that if you ignore Clan Hunts, optional espers, and other sidequests, you can breeze through the game pretty fast. A big portion of the length is those things.

I'm about to enter to tomb, so yeah, guess I really am nearing the halfway point. Huh, I am having a lot of fun with it, it's just going by so fast. I do intend to get more involved with hunts and stuff (only done 3 or 4 at this point) so I imagine I do have quite a ways to go factoring that in.

Exodus was beating my ass during the early levels of 40. Come back a few levels higher and with the aid of another Esper and it wasn't too bad. Also managed to beat and capture Zalera as well

Just did the intro sequence last night and kinda disappointed how it looks handheld on switch. I wish I could transfer progress between PS4 and switch so I could play it in 4K when I want and portable when I wanna grind. Oh well. Still brings a big smile to my face.

Any tips on getting Vrsabha?

Looking at Reddit/wiki it's in the Great Crystal and dropped by Evil Spirit. 3% drop rate >__>

I hate that area after getting Shemhazai I went a bit further in and was getting beat by mobs of bombs and those necro spirits to the point I just had to leave and hoped never to return even though it seems like there are some great items to find deeper in..

I really want this game but I'd much rather get it on steam. How much of a game changer is it to be able to reset your jobs? Seems to be the only feature I'd miss from the switch version.

i mean, if you don't plan out your party in advance, I would say it is pretty big. If you are going to go in blind, I think it could be a big deal if you want a "good" party.

If you are just going to have fun and do what you want, I don't think it matters.

Ok fair enough. I suppose I'm the kind of guy who'd just be playing for fun. I guess I could always just play it through more than one time.

BlakeofT sorry I edited my post after I reread your question then it clicked. The job system reminds me of FF11 online where you have to create the right job balances to maximise battles

Ie White mage was preferable to have black mage secondary role to get max mp and magic atk etc... Switch and XB1 just feels much more free to experiment without much regret

It's a pretty big game changer imo. I bought it on PC and love playing it on my widescreen monitor but I'm probably going to end up buying it again on Switch because of the ability to change jobs.

It's not a game changer at all. It's a nice QoL feature, but the game is so easy that it's not even an issue to worry about.

You can use almost any job combination and complete everything the game has to offer. In the original IZJS there was only the option to have 1 job, and even then you could beat the game with only WHMs. The PS4/PC versions gave you a second job + Trial Mode (You can get OP items very early and carry them over to your normal save. Essentially allowing you to get unlimited Ribbons, Excaliburs, etc).

The game is so easy in fact that I have a save file with all party members and no classes selected as a "Base NG file" so if I ever wanted to play again I can just start from that point and select any jobs I want to experiment with.

The adding a second job + trial mode allows you to completely break the game in so many ways that nobody should stress out at all about combinations. Just use whatever you like the best. I use all 12 jobs because I think it's fun, and I'm sure its far from optimal.

If you were concerned about min/maxing then you'll have to monitor every characters HP gains per level as it's random. Look up Ashe10 on youtube to see how insane min/maxing can go.

The game is also pretty short. A lot of the lenght comes from the optional content, so with 4x speed you could speed past most of the game up until you get your second job.

While the Switch/XBox additions would be nice, I wouldn't let it get to you.

So this game is piss easy and kinda takes the fun out of the combat system. I played the original release on the PS2 and remember it being much harder...to the point where I couldn't beat an enemy and gave up. I'm not at that point on the switch version yet but I really don't remember it being this easy. Does new game + make it challenging at least?

Hunts + trial mode will give you a lot of challenges.

No, NG+ is the same unless you change the difficulty. I started the game on hard difficulty and the start was pretty hard and so was the last boss + the entire post game + DLC. The DLC is very challenging honestly. The majority of the main campaign is rather managable though, true. The hard difficulty increased the XP and gold I think, which kinda made up for the harder enemies.

edit: Wrong game, lmao.

I think the game has been pretty hard honestly, until you unlock the second job tree I suppose, but then again I have no idea how to earn gold in this game. All those weapons and abilities and gambits are just taunting me while I'm window shopping as a lowlife peasant. I guess you farm loot from low level enemies and sell them? Hunting marks doesn't seem to give much and treasure chests (can you even call them chests?) are a joke.

Stealing and poaching are your best friends. Also sell equipment if you have more than one copy, they fetch a decent price

Thanks. The problem is also that enemies dish out different status effects as the game goes on so you're continually buying and using items. At first it's Blind and Poison. Then I get the spells that heal those statuses. Now it's Petrify, Sleep and Doom etc. Also one time one of my characters got X-Zoned? Like I literally had no idea what happened and how to combat that. The game doesn't really tell you much.

Also, when I perform a Quickening the game tells me to do something but I have no idea what.

Some effects can only be dealt with remedies and remedy lores activated. X-Zone you have to switch areas for your character to come back iirc

Status recovery items are not very expensive but you could still buy white magic spells like esuna, stona, etc if you want ot use MP instead

So anyone really tried to figure out the ideal job combinations? Or just what has worked best building toward the end and the hardest bosses/hunts?

I see random articles and such but there seems to be little logic or such and just all over the place. Just opened the second job and am curious what people have found to work best?

Holy shit dude, I thought I was in the Dragon's Dogma thread lmao. Well, I platinumed FFXII too, so you're lucky.

This game doesn't get hard until you go for the optional content. They added a separate arena mode which is very difficulty as well. The story fights remain easy though.

There is no real point in min maxing honestly, the game is allrdy way too easy as it is you could finish the game without even touching the second job board because they never actually rebalanced the game for it and they allrdy did very little for the IZJS version.

Nabbed the Barheim Key and went back into that tunnel, going a new way. Wasn't expecting to get swamped by so many enemies down there, but eventually made it to Zalera, so killed and nabbed that as a new Esper. The amount you can go off-story in this game and just explore is phenomenal.

When I set up my gambits for Vaan for example it just keeps doing the first thing on the list and nothing else

Party leader target - steal
Party leader target - attack

All he does is steal the whole battle and never attacks

That's because since the first gambit is always applicable he doesn't attack.
There is no gambits that makes you steal until the enemy doesn't have loot. You have to use roundabout ways like foe hp=100% steal to ensure he steals from everyone at least once

Some of it is less relevant now that people have done more experimenting with job combinations post-TZA, but I did round up some links here. A good one for quick reference was done by a user Kensuke on the old forum, and he gives good reasoning on why job combinations would work for each character.

I'm not sure if we're allowed to link to the old forum or not (and I can provide a direct link if we can), but Kensuke kindly made a updated version to DonkeyPunchJr's guide, which is an excellent quick reference if you're looking for ideas.

Kensuke's original post:
I thought it would be fun to write a small guide to compliment this one from GFaqs a lot of people here seem to be using. That guide is a bit older now and since then new amazing combinations have been found (mainly Shikari/Red Mage). I put most combinations under characters so you can mix and match your party more easily.

Vaan – Can pull off any job thanks to high stats everywhere. A lot of people like him as Shikari though for 'canon' reasons.
Shikari/Foebreaker – DPS (genji gloves) + Breaks. Big con is that it has no magic (therefore suits Bash and Balthier better).
Shikari/White Mage – Nearly invincible tank with healing.
Shikari/Red Mage – Tank+Black Magic+support spells. Jack of all trades and mostly great at them all (makes for an amazing 'leader character'). Penelo and Ashe are also great with this one.
Pretty much any job combination (can use any of the ones below)

Balthier – Best as a katana user, but a lot of people like him as Machinist.
Machinist/White Mage – Healer/support that uses gun on downtime (better used by others because Balthier isn't a great mage).
Machinist/Uhlan – Gunner that can hit all weaknesses and is able to dish out big damage.
Shikari/Foebreaker – See Vaan list above.
Bushi job (see below).

Basch – Best as a katana user, but a lot of people like him as Uhlan (he's fastest with spears too).
Uhlan/Archer – Can use both jobs very effectively, gives a ranged option + use of many item lores.
Shikari/Foebreaker – See Vaan list above.
Bushi job (see below)

Ashe – Has the best magic stat in the game, but can also work with physical jobs because she also has decent strength.
Knight/Time Mage – Healing (with espers) + Time Magic + decent damage. Makes good use of her stats.
Uhlan/Time Mage – Decent with spears and can use that time magic effectively.

Ashe/Penelo can both do these jobs very well. Fran can do them too, but not as great.
Black Mage/Monk – All HP lores making your Mage tanky + ultimate Holy spell. Only con is that the 16 battle lores Monk has mostly go to waste.
Black Mage/Archer – Access to all item lores for emergency support + some extra HP lores.
Black Mage/Machinist – Same benefits as archer with a few less item lores. Access to some late game time magic.
White Mage/Time Mage – Ultimate support character, but perhaps not enough gambit slots to use it efficiently.
Black Mage/Red Mage – Ultimate Ardor (fire) spell, but a lot of overlap and only 2 swiftness.

Fran – Probably best as a damage dealer with poles (she's the fastest with that weapon), but a lot of people like her as a Red Mage and Archer for canon reasons.
Red Mage/Archer – Good utility for most of the game and an endgame combo with burning bow+ardor.
Red Mage/Machinist – Effective user of measures, allowing for amazing evasion. Access to Dark Shot + Black Robe combo.
Monk/Foebreaker – Allows you to use Kanya+Genji Gloves, nearly as strong as the Bushi alternative (you can have both though).

Bushi gets the strongest weapon in the game (Kumbha), which makes it the best DPS class. There are lots of useful combinations with it. All of them are best used with Bash, Balthier and Vaan. Ashe can do well too with the ones that use magic.
Bushi/Knight – Allows the Bushi to use some healing spells. Heavy Armor + 10 battle lores. Access to strong Excalibur combo.
Bushi/Uhlan – Very strong in terms of DPS because of Heavy Armor + 13 battle lores.
Bushi/Monk – The strongest one with in terms of DPS with 16 battle lores and access to Heavy Armors through an Esper. Allows Bushi to use Curaja + great support spells.
Bushi/Foebreaker – Breaks of course, but also Heavy Armor + 12 battle lores.
Bushi/Shikari – Ultimate Yiazmat killer, but besides that not as great.

Whatever you pick, another thing to keep in mind is that you get two Genji Gloves in this game. That's the equipment that allows you to do combo attacks for insane physical damage in the endgame. Only Bushi, Knight and Foebreaker have access to the Genji license. Besides that you want a weapon with a good combo rate. Kumbha (katana) is the best one for that, followed closely by Kanya (pole). Vrscika (hammer) and Mesa (ninja blade) are also good. It's just something to keep in mind while dividing up jobs. Monk for example could use a subjob with a genji license to use the Kanya efficiently.

There are a lot of other decent combinations, but I just tried to focus of some of the better ones. Keep in mind you can finish the endgame with literally any combination and that you should pick whatever you think would be fun. Still, here are some combinations with bad synergy you should probably avoid: Machinist/Archer, Machinist/Time Mage, Samurai/White Mage, Black Mage/White Mage, Knight/White Mage and Foebreaker/Uhlan, Knight/Red Mage.

For me, I like to go by a combination of a) what weapons look good with each character, b) what jobs are kinda appropriate for their skill sets. It's worked well for me thus far, lol. But as other users have said, go with whatever you're interested in - between doubling up on jobs, the ease of accidentally over levelling, and TZA being easier in general that the original, it's pretty hard to go wrong. Plus, you can respec if a character job combination isn't working.

Just finished it. I had played a bit of the game on PS2 but never came close to finishing it before. Wow, that's definitely one of the best Final Fantasy games I've played. Makes you wonder how they went from XII -> XIII.

There were a couple of downsides (second half can feel like a slog) but overall I enjoyed the game a lot.

Also, 4x speed modifiers should be an option in every 60hr+ RPG.

The optional stuff can be quite the challenge, especially if you try and tackle them as soon as they become available. Thanks to the job system, your characters are less versatile, but a lot more powerful, mostly due to the addition of many extra Battle and Magick Lores to the License Board.

So anyone really tried to figure out the ideal job combinations? Or just what has worked best building toward the end and the hardest bosses/hunts?

Outside of a few "top DPS" combinations like Bushi / Knight and weapon combo speeds, a lot of what's optimal is just opinion.

I feel like a fucking dumbass.

I'm in Barheim Passage (I think) and up until this point, my early impressions were glowing. I was having a blast. But this... ... is like negative fun. I hate this. It's the worst part of a timelimit + harder enemies when you're doing poorly. I hadn't died once yet, and I've died like six times already. It seems pretty linear, I'm rushing straight to the battery bugs and killing them, but I've dipped a few times below 30%, and then the darkness comes and I get ganked. Also, I got pretty far south but there's just a giant fence/gate in front of me.

Surely I'm just missing something? This sucks.

It's a big advantage. Keeps things fresh all the way through your run. It's not a short game.
The changes might come to the Steam version too. There is no reason why they shouldn't.

IIRC, the power level only falls when there's actually a Battery Mimic nearby zapping electricity; so you're best off checking every nook and cranny for them. It sounds like you're missing one or two so they're constantly draining the bar.

Checking the side areas should also take care of that gate.

And that was my miss! Thank you! Didn't realize the battery meter only depleted when there was a zapper around. Focusing on them first and as exclusively as possible got me through no problem.

Boss at the end gave me some trouble; I feel like I leaned in way too heavily on potions, even with gambits set up for healing.

Is there a way in game to view the license board, or do you just have to "minesweeper" it and hope to get what you're looking for?

Got my Great Trango, got my Kumbha, and got my six Ribbons and six Gendarme shields. Now I truly am OP.
Time to clear out Trial Mode.
This game still kicks ass.
Any tips on getting Vrsabha?
Stealing it from Diabolos in Trial Mode stage 70-something is probably the simplest way, if you can make it that far.
Otherwise it's off to the Great Crystal with you, and I wouldn't wish that upon anybody. I hate that place.
