i feel like most people would suggest hard for starting out, since you can always drop the difficulty down (but not going up) if you're struggling with it
or just go maddening like some of us did and suffer :v

Give hard a try in that case. If you start on normal you can't raise it if you feel it's too easy.

If you've played a FE game before and want a bit of challenge I've found Hard to be decently challenging without getting frustrating, you can lower the difficulty midway but not increase it.

Thanks friends, sounds like it's hard for me then

Been playing around with the Emblems. Gave Marth to Yunaka and Micaiah to Alear so they can both reclass into Wolf Knight should I want to. Also gave Leif to Framme for several proficiencies should her current class not work out.

That said, I refined (+3) and engraved (Genealogy) her iron arts and she's kicking ass now. Just promoted her in fact and she's hitting 18 physical Atk... with a brave weapon. Pretty sweet.

Honestly she's my favorite character so far.

Wasn't entirely sold on Yunaka's performance thus far but I bought her a Kard (+2, Holy) and oh wow, she's a murder machine now? Granted I used Anna's paralogue to try her out and I'm pretty sure I was overleveled. But she put up quite the performance.

Her animations are pretty insane. Is it just me or does she actually parry the foe in her dodge animation?

Anna looks fun. Dig the design and new VA. I've always liked the gremlin archetype and she seems to be a good example. I've read that she wants to be a Mage, though. I think the easiest way should be giving her Celica and leveling them in Arena?

The way she says Lady Anna makes me feel sick, makes me want to play Arc Rise Fantasia to cleanse myself

Encountered a weird ass glitch

The control stick doesn't register when I push it all the way, meaning Alear just walks incredibly slowly. I tried it on both pro controller and joycons, both have the issue. Played another game, no issue.

I usually dash 90% of the time, but it's mad annoying

She does and it's awesome.

I turned Anna into a Mage Knight (Axe/Tome) and it's pretty fun. Not sure it's optimal, but I like it.

Is your camera zoomed in really close or even all the way? I noticed Alears running speed changing to walking while having the camera zoomed in too close.

Chapter 20 done. Phew.

Wondering whether I should finish two paralogues before next chapter or just continue the chapter until I got all my emblems back.

Some gameplay(and I guess story) spoilers for 21 and 22 that may influence your choice.
We lose our Emblems again going into 22 and won't be able to change our party/return to Somniel until done with 22.

No reason to give her Celica, she has awful Mag as on her startng class so you will have an awful caster if you do that. Try to level her to 10 and then do the (aroundch 8 spoilers) promotion -> reclass thing to move her to Warrior and then inmediatly to Sage.

Yeah my Framme has been a murder machine too. She's had some really really good luck with levels early on, so her speed ends up giving her 4 attacks paired with arts. Just need to shore up her defenses cuz she's pretty squishy. Her and Yunaka have been my favs so far.
Fire Emblem reached #5 on NPD without digital, rejoice friends.

I heard the game doesn't have a New Game +. But can someone who beat the game tell me what happens after completing the last chapter? Does the credit roll and you get a game over, or do they drop you back into the game to dabble with the rest of end game or side content?

What's the point of winning Emblem arena battles? Can't tell a difference between winning or losing, and it won't let you skip it. Do you get some extra bond exp or something?

I meant not to actually use her with Celica but to boost bond levels in Arena --> unlock tome proficiency --> reclass to mage before I actually start leveling her.

I suppose the downside would be that it takes longer for her to promote this way, but on the flipside she should be easier to get kills with as a mage than a frontliner.

That's not a bad idea tbh.

Ch.20 would probably have been interesting if I wasn't overleveled. All the divine paralogues and regular paralogues allowed me to march down the lanes. That's probably why skirmish spawn rate is non-existent on maddening. I liked the gimmicks for this map though.

Glad the game was a big success. Started a hard mode play through today to experience the new dlc, zoomed through chapter 6 as quick as I could

Cleared Hector and Soren's paralogues, I'm at chapter 14 and those two stages skyrocketed my levels, my main team is advanced class level 6-8. Soren's paralogue almost got me at the end as it was just Alear and Yunaka near him, but then the AI decided to nope the fuck out and went straight to where most of my units were, sometimes the AI does dumb things even on Hard.

Panette is the MVP of my team, she just shreds with Ike, just throw her in the middle of the brawl and let her go wild.

I'll do Ike's paralogue next. I still don't know who to pair Camilla with, so I'll leave her paralogue for a bit later.

Yeah overleveling from DLC is definitely an issue. I wonder if staggering those maps out will alleviate the problem. On the bright side there is a notable surplus of SP now.

On future playthroughs I'm gonna save all the DLC maps for right before the last third of the game so I can just power through the slog the maps become, haha.

I'm gonna save this new set until I finish this playthrough though.

Though I wasn't necessarily a defender of this game's story, I didn't mind it. I liked the sentai comparison and am fine with real stupid stories in some of my media. My favorite anime is fuggin Fairy Tail of all things after all.

But man............maaaaaaaaaaaaan..........

I just finished Chapter 21. And all the events post-chapter almost made me drop the game.

I cannot express how much it just deflated me. Like, in future playthroughs I was already planning on skipping cutscenes, but I don't even think I even want to attempt a Hard or Maddening run anymore even to experience the gameplay. Though I enjoy it well enough, a story is what keeps me engaged (hah) in the game.... I have plans on going back to 3 Houses to do the routes I haven't completed. I plan on going back to GBA FE once it gets put on the Expansion Pak.

This though......I don't know if I can. I might boot it back up for Wave 3 & 4 since I paid for things, but I think I put in enough time once I complete the game to get my money's worth out of it. There's no point in me returning to this again...... And that's such a.....weird feeling. I rarely have buyer's remorse and I didn't expect to get it from FE.

My current plan is to do them as you get their main game pair, so soren after you get ike, hector after you get Lyn, etc, and see how that flies. Saving them for later has its benefits but I'm interested in how challenge they might be earlier when you have a smaller pool of emblems to work with.

Just finished the game, last map was really intense and it took every Engage and every unit to clear the final boss without losing any character.

I have enjoyed it a lot, map design is great and battle graphics/animations are amazing, it feels like a proper follow up to the 3DS games in this regard. Music and the few CG cutscenes are also good, and I like a lot the Engage mechanic and the approach to classes of this game (even if Support enemy units can be too much at times).

Story and writing are weak points for sure, some supports are fine but the overall tone is too silly and simplistic. I have also some isues with the non-combat presentation, aside from some early cutscenes and all CG cinematics, most of the time you are not battling you are watching 2-3 still characters talking in front of a JPG background, this was also an issue in 3H of course but as Engange 3D models and animations look far better is disappointing that the story is presented in such a boring way.

Overall Engange is a great FE entry, it may not be the most complete FE as the story side of things is weak, but after 2 games with less than stellar map/gameplay design (Valentia and 3H), it feels great to return to what FE does the best: making every map a good challenge, making every crit an adreline rush and reducing all non-combat things to a mostly meaningless activity for players who want a more relaxed experience instead of forcing them.

I am still on chapter 18 but if it helps people said it lands well at the end and yeah most of those agree with you. (not reading spoilers but I'm already bracing up for that particular chapter you mentioned lol.)

You go back to the title screen, but if you continue your file you get a bunch of extra resources and can just continue playing, yes. The final battle is also available for replay from a room in the Somniel too.

I seem to recall other posters mentioning 20-21 before so it makes sense. I won't go into details, but there was just a LOT in that post-chapter cutscene of 21 in particular that just rubbed me in an extremely wrong way. I hope it bounces back so I'm not soured on the game completely, but even if it does I think I stand by the fact that it's not a story that I'll ever watch again.

Yeah that's the nadir of the story for sure

For what it's worth, though: it never recovers

It tries to, but it keeps leaning more and more into completely unearned, saccharine emotional notes that fall flat or worse-than-flat each time

Wanting to tap out because you aren't enjoying something isn't a weakness. It's noble to spend your time in other places

So I still love this game and I'm optimistic about FE again, I thought I'd stick to remakes after Fates - but late game missions are honestly not as fun, and it's a shame. And hearing the comically bad story gets somehow worse is just, how? ☠️

But I'd probably go for a second playthrough, I really enjoyed the gameplay. Next time I'm going to reclass early in the game before that happens. I might even try casual mode for the first time.

On my second playthrough on Maddening/classic with RNG growths. I had over 100 hours in my first playthrough, probably shouldn't turtle so hard to kill every unit on the map lol.

I just want you to know, if you hit 60 hours of playtime before realizing emblem training in the arena is infinite and not once per mission ala the 3 regular fights per battle, you are not alone.

I really liked Celica's paralogue. I like when the game makes you go all in from the beginning. The infinite reinforcements and warp strike follow up were really cool setups.

I was watching someone's stream and noticed in the top right corner when you're targeted by an enemy it shows the damage you may take
I can't figure out where this option in my game is at all? There's nothing there

Aaaaand done with the campaign (hard/casual). Memorable gameplay, but the characters/story are a series low point. Not sure if I'm going to replay it before the next couple of DLC waves. I hope to see a lot of elements Engage introduced in the game, but I hope whomever was behind the story to skip the next game or ten games.

Chapter 22 did alleviate a lot of the bad taste that Chapter 21 left in my mouth. That said, I still have a LOT of problems with how 21 was handled in many aspects.

Everyone just STANDING THERE for......well.....everything that was happening. Marni sacrificing herself after seconds of "character conflict" and back/forthing. Zephia not stopping her. The heroes standing there a 2nd time when Sombron somehow got the rings AGAIN. No one removing that stupid fucking HELMET that was damaged even as Veyle/Evil Veyle stood there complaining how damaged it was. Thank fuck SHE finally decided to rip it off herself, because no one else was going to step up and do it apparently. Just everything about that sequence of events is just. so. stupid.

As I said in a previous post, I have a high tolerance for anime bullshit. After all, Chapter 22 was kinda stupid but not AS stupid as the one before, so it didn't bother me. At least the Emblems hinted at their Deus Ex Machina back in the upper Teen Chapters so it didn't feel as completely out of left field as the Hounds/FellPrincess Identity Crisises that was going on.
