NPD rankings tell you very little about performance. Just because a platform isn't recognized as the best-seller doesn't mean that the platform is not selling well.
That's because you still don't understand why people are picking up a Switch.Only Pokemon Quest was a new game, right? It's amazing that so many people are apparently picking up a Switch off of it being a machine full of ports.
I judge the game on what it is, not what pr beasts say it is.They are the ones making the game. If they say it's mainline then it's mainline. You don't make the rules for this.
Period.
It almost tripled but you know...Only doubled? Why didn't it triple? Looks like this is the end for old Nintendo...
It's marketing. Pokémon go plus set in johto hardly fits the bill for what I'd consider a mainline game.
you got the math there wrong, its obviously 0 X 3 = 0
Doubled from what? Compared to what time period? Week over week? If so what's the weekly trajectory been so far? A statement like this is pretty meaningless by itself. Surely E3 is going to sell some units, but double the amount of [no information] is still [no information].
What I glean from Benji's post is that the trajectory is upwards both in the week prior to E3 and the week after E3. In that context, furthermore, Switch did "very well." My conclusion is that Switch did very well.Everything saw substantial increases in hardware performance the 2 weeks surrounding E3.
Switch did very well yes.
I literally had this thought go through my head reading the thread title and I don't even work at retail.Everything saw substantial increases in hardware performance the 2 weeks surrounding E3.
Switch did very well yes.
Switch is going to take June, July, August. I can feel it in my bones.
The Fortnite fever is real.
If you are going to make a joke about the stock market, don't make it obvious that you don't have a clue.
just because everything saw a bump dont detracts from the fact that Switch saw a bump.I literally had this thought go through my head reading the thread title and I don't even work at retail.
GameStop isn't in the business of saying negative things about the consoles they sell.
Nah, guy who works for the NPD, winning the NPD is all that matters.
It varied by model (including Pro and X), $150-300 iirc.Wasn't that the week where they were giving $250 credit on any PS4 or X1S that got traded in for a Switch?
Well, you guys are the experts. I will take you at your word and it sounds like you're calling it for PS4.
That's what got my girlfriend a switch. Planned on upgrading to X so I traded in my S and got her a switch. So we are part of this number from gamestop.Wasn't that the week where they were giving $250 credit on any PS4 or X1S that got traded in for a Switch?
Nintendo sales are traditionally heavily back loaded towards the late holiday season. Moreso than the other console manufacturers.Yeah I agree. The Switch is a healthy enough platform as it is, it doesn't really matter to f ues the best selling platform every month. It doesn't need to be to be a successful.
I have the same opinion on the Xbox honestly right now (in terms of the US market)
Thank you for the math lesson.Doesn't really mean much.
1 doubled = 2.
GameStop is still probably gonna liquidate within the next 5 years. Thankfully to some, unfortunately for others.

I definitely see all signs of PS4 blowing past their expectations this year. Maybe Nintendo will slightly under-perform. It could wind up a highly entertaining photo finish but in the end everyone wins.
No alarm at all.I still don't really see any need for alarm regarding Nintendo hitting their forecast. They've already made it clear that they have more to announce and there are still 9 months left in the FY.
For all we know a price cut might be baked into their forecast too.
I have the same opinion on the Xbox honestly right now (in terms of the US market)
Is it? How would they reach their forecast if they don't start taking over a console which is supposed to sell 16 million this year?

Look at Switch sales last year, or Wii in it's prime. Look at the games coming in November and December. Is it? How would they reach their forecast if they don't start taking over a console which is supposed to sell 16 million this year?
I really find it hard to believe that Sony got their forecast low by like 4 million.Because the PS4 has been continually outperforming its forecast and will likely continue to do so for the whole year. If (hypothetically of course) the PS4 goes on to sell 21M and the Switch sells 20M that doesn't mean that it wasn't a successful year for the Switch.
Also the US is only one region, albeit the biggest region for the console manufacturers.
The post I replied to said it's meaningless if they take first or not, not when they will sell the most.Look at Switch sales last year, or Wii in it's prime. Look at the games coming in November and December.
They usually sell more towards the holiday than the rest of the year combined.

Monster Hunter as well. Early 2018 was much stronger than Sony likely anticipated. With RDR and Spiderman on the backend and some good deals this could very well be PS4's biggest year ever. Of course, their performance in countries like japan might hold them back some over the remainder of the year. You never know. The PS4's performance is surprising everyone seemingly. Fortnite and GOW being fantastic really carried it way more than most were expecting, possibly even Sony.
I have no idea where it will wind up for the year, but the point here is that who gets "first" in NPD is literally meaningless without the context or numbers. Obviously this will never happen but if the Switch sells like 700k this June and still comes in second to the PS4 selling 720k that's still an absurdly successful result for the Switch.
Winning NPD is meaningless.
Yep ! Completely agree.
It proves that console sales increase after E3, across the board. Nintendo's E3 isn't any better as a result of this Gamestop quote.just because everything saw a bump dont detracts from the fact that Switch saw a bump.
only thing this proves wrong is the naysayers that E3 this year didnt manage to make an impact on people.
oh it is actuallyNintendo's E3 isn't any better as a result of this Gamestop quote.
"Super Smash Bros is jumping right up to the top of the [pre-order] list. We're also seeing great reaction from Pokémon Let's Go, both SKUs, and then of course people are trying to get their hands on the Pokéball [controller] as well."
Nintendo's E3 isn't any better as a result of this Gamestop quote.
They're not PR beasts. It's the literal developers.
There was widespread disappointment with Nintendo's E3 this year. I'm sure this isn't the first you've heard of this.
Eh, meaningless without numbers is different than outright saying it's meaningless. You never know. The PS4's performance is surprising everyone seemingly. Fortnite and GOW being fantastic really carried it way more than most were expecting, possibly even Sony.

Nintendo's E3 wasn't even bad. It was just overwhelmingly mediocreThere was widespread disappointment with Nintendo's E3 this year. I'm sure this isn't the first you've heard of this.
Some people seem to be spinning this post E3 sales bump as proof that Nintendo's E3 really wasn't bad. This entire discussion originated from a Gamestop executive saying the Switch got a sales bump after E3. Other retail employees have shown up in this thread to say all the consoles got a sales bump after E3, because that's just what happens with all the media coverage at that time of year.

I wouldn't call it mediocre. It's was good. Not bad. Not great. Good.Nintendo's E3 wasn't even bad. It was just overwhelmingly mediocre
It was bad considering the expectations a lot of us had for their E3. The first half of the year was very quiet for them (unless you were dying for Wii U ports) and a lot of people expected this E3 to really be a big moment to find out what their internal teams have been working on. Not a single internal team project was revealed. They also chose to spend 25 minutes talking about Smash Bros. Most of the press outlets I checked out did not have positive things to say about that. Even Nintendo centric youtube channels were critical.Nintendo's E3 wasn't even bad. It was just overwhelmingly mediocre
Most consumers don't even know what E3 is, but they do know what Paladins is? okayMost consumers don't even know what E3 is.
They just see Fortnite, Paladins, a Pokemon game on the Switch and maybe some Smash trailers on their news feed and they buy buy buy.
In the context of 2018 games and games that came out right around the E3 period, Switch was clearly a winner.
