Source on that last bit? This interview suggests the opposite. 10m should be the floor but there's no indication pre-orders are healthy
The source is me watching Insomniac on twitter and reading their tweets. I am guessing they're good. This interview is only about Gamestop and nowhere can I read "Spider-Man preorders are weak".

Then why bring up NBA?
"I'm looking forward to an incredible Q4," he says. "You're kicking off with Call of Duty and going into Red Dead Redemption 2, then you have NBA and Assassin's Creed and Battlefield and then you're going all the way through December when you're ending up with Smash Bros and you've got Pokémon and Fallout 76 in November - that's a powerful holiday line-up."
He doesn't even say anything about NBA preorders.

He doesn't say anything about pre-orders, but he does mention games as expected high performers, where he omits mentioning Spider-Man.
I just find it odd. I don't think anyone will suggest the game will do anything less than bonkers numbers, for what it's worth (or no one who wants to be taken seriously).

He also doesn't say anything about FIFA 19 and we know that game will be huge.

I don't know if this is serious doubts or the usual fake concern, but we have a regular insider on the NPD thread who already explained how Spider-Man pre-orders in the US are above God of War at the same point of time. Whether it breaks God of War record launch or not is another matter (it probably won't) but at the very least we know Insomniac is on track to launch the best selling game of their history.

The Games Industry article is a discussion about multiple topic, it's not a exhaustive list about every games that are going to be huge during the second half. There is absolutely nothing to read about the lack of Spider-Man mention.

GameStop is talking about Q4 games looking at the article.

That's what I thought, but then Phantom Thief pointed out this bit:

I'm not sure if he's talking about NBA Live or NBA 2k but both games are releasing in September. So is Spiderman, which is why it's not being questioned.

Any specific tweets you can point to?

You can go buy $50 worth of PSN or XBL money from them.

I assume you can buy eShop money too, but I haven't been in a GameStop in like a decade or so.

Selling PSN credit and the like I'd assume.

Platform and in-game currency and items. A lot of aspects of the games industry may be changing, but a ten year old will still probably never have a credit card. There will always be a need for young people to be able to spend their money on their own.

PSN cards, Microsoft Points(at least they were called that back when i owned a MS console) and Eshop Credit.

Lots of people still need these kinds of cards, and at least in europe(from my experience in Switzerland, Germany and luxembourg) Gamestop used to be one of the few stores that carried Eshop cards.

And probably the biggest thing being Steam cards, since PC gaming is quite big, especially in Europe.

Either selling balance cards or their actual digital currency of gamestop points.

Got it. I was always under the impression that retailers made basically zero margin off of these digital points/currency cards. Now I'm curious what the breakdown is. If I were to go to Gamestop and buy $50 of PSN credit it's only going to cost me $50, so if Gamestop is making a profit on that who is taking the hit?

Should we also be worried about FIFA 19 because they didn't mention it?

C'mon now. Spiderman is a HUGE exclusive title launching close to q4. You think that would have been front of mind during this interview. It's curious that it wasn't mentioned. Preorders may be fine, but it was just curious that it wasn't mentioned. I'm sure the game will do well. But I expected tons of hype and massive preorders

I've already gone over this plenty in NPD threads but I'll add it here since it's being brought up

There is 0 reason to worry about Spider-Man. Zero

Why the fuck are people preordering BO4 for Battle Royale when we haven't seen it? Don't even know how many players it'll support.

And FIFA is bigger than Spider-Man yet they didn't say anything about it, it doesn't mean it is or it will do bad just because they are silent about it.

Fair enough. Preorders may be fine. Someone else mentioned that GoW preorders weren't great (not sure if that was factual) and we know that game has done well. This interview is the only thing I've seen where we can possibly question preorders.

  • GameStop expects we will see more game releases in the April through August window in the future due to how well games are doing outside traditional windows, but that it might take a few years for development schedules to match up with that due to how long games take to make.
Secret best news of the thread? I really hope this comes to be true!

So I went to look into this since I realized that most of the quick drop off I saw was with retail numbers, and then remembered that digital was growing astronomically after Fallout 4's launch.

Apparently Fallout 4's first three years outsold Skyrim's first three years, according to Pete Hines, which would put it over 20 million for that period.

Skyrim eventually got over 30 million, but presumably this would mean Fallout 4 could be on track to beat that.

Oh wow. Fascinating. Thanks for doing the research legwork.

I don't give a crap about them co-existing along side of games, but the pre-orders for them keep a lot of stores a float, at least with individual people's numbers (so they don't lose hours/get fired).

Seriously though, I've been in the store a few times and seen people pre-order multiple Pops. Some can get hard to find with collectors/scalpers, so pre-ordering them makes sense.

Rockstar, my god. Yeah their games I usually buy day, week one no gameplay needed.

This article seems a lil different than the recent one about Gamestop struggling or fearing digital purchases getting bigger, unless I'm remembering wrong. I figured because of Fortnite and PUBG the PSN, XBL cards might be a big seller. especially PSN because of issues some have with PSN and credit cards. Like that Fortnite PS4 bundle. Someone posted will Gamestop let ppl know they dont need Plus. And a few of us were like why? Thats more PSN cards sold for them if they dont.

I'd love to know the margins on those cards. I am guessing is generally a 10-15% depending on value with additional rebates and marketing dollars from platform holders when they have bigger deals.

And yes they sell all kinds of digital cash cards, including steam.

What does help is being able to trade in physical games for the cars and they sometimes give bonus credit. Add on that they can flip those used games helps.

I will often flip a physical game into a digital version with them.

That Pokeball is one of the dumbest shit I have ever seen and a lot of people I follow on social networks and a bunch of my friends are excited. I don't get it, man.

Then its not for you and that's okay but dont pretend like it's not a cool novelty. It's a pokemon go plus, an item that retails for $35. On top of that it's also a novelty joycon ($40 for a joycon) that vibrates like a pokeball does in game. It also allows you to level up your pokemon while your not playing the game. That's easily worth the asking price of $50 imo.

So what kind of markup could thy possibly get? 50.00 is 50.00 does Sony and others give 2.00 per transaction or something to Gamestop for the sale??
yes usually more. You figure out of $50 Sony is getting $15 when you spend it, so they can afford to give some to the stores or they wouldn't carry them.

Red Dead gonna be yet another Rockstar game that never leaves NPD. They deserve it though, Rockstar truly are special.

Not surprised about BO4. COD gonna COD.

Bulk prices and the like. Around 3% for a local convince store and probably more for a games retailer that stocks higher quantities.

Notes:
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 is expected to be the biggest retail game of the year by far based on preorders.
  • Black Ops 4 is doing incredibly well, which GameStop thinks is due to the Battle Royale mode.
  • Switch sales doubled over the course of the week after Nintendo's E3 showing, with Pokémon and especially Smash Bros seeing huge interest. There's also lots of demand for the Pokeball controller.
  • GameStop expects the shift toward September/October instead of November releases to continue into the future because most publishers wanted to do it to enable deeper discounts on Black Friday, as opposed to just trying to dodge Red Dead.
  • GameStop is positive on Games as a Service because their digital currency business is booming and is now over $1 billion a year. Multiplayer games also drive lots of controller and headset sales.
  • GameStop expects we will see more game releases in the April through August window in the future due to how well games are doing outside traditional windows, but that it might take a few years for development schedules to match up with that due to how long games take to make.

Concern trolling Spider-man potential sales now, I've seen it all!
With RDR2 I'm super curious to see how much it meets of GTA V debut. Of course it won't match it but I think its should end up reasonably close.

Rockstar have minted a whole new generation of fans with GTA V and once we see finally gameplay in 100 years(jk), I think they'll be even more converted despite the lack of a city or fast cars.

Either way RDR2 probably not leaving any sales charts until we are midway through PS5/XBX2.
