I needed a GBC like I needed water. I was 19, I owned a GB since 1990 but playing portable games in color for the first time was extremely exciting. (not counting the minute I played on a kid's Lynx in Sunday School before the teacher saw and forced him to put it away).
I was 19, living paycheck to paycheck in a cheap apartment, working at Burger King a three mile walk a day away. But I purposely shorted rent to ensure I could buy one. I got the yellow one at first, but a friend of mine who was more of a "yellow person" bought a lime green one a day later and insisted we switch.
Had:
- Super Mario DX -- This was the first big one. Having played hundreds of hours of SMB1, the idea of playing it on the go was more exciting than the game itself. Plus the extra red coins in the level, the bonus stuff, especially the hidden lost levels? I never lost my mind over a special edition of a game before or since.
- Link's Awakening DX -- I had already got a few dungeons into the game on GB. It was already one of my favorite games of all time. But now, in color, I played it happily again and beat it this time.
- Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel - the idea of a MGS game but with the classic NES perspective was super appealing, but I couldn't get far due to the controls. I remember really really digging the intro cut scene though. The little glowing red pixels for sniper lasers on Snake.
- Crystalis -- this was highly hyped up by gaming magazines, but I have something funny to say: even though I owned it, I never played it. IN FACT, it's one of two GBC games I LITERALLY HAVE IN MY DESK AT THE MOMENT JUST A FEW FEET AWAY and I've never played it.
- Pokemon Gold - me and that same friend bought this day 1 (he bought Silver), though we very badly acted like we were buying it for his "nephew" at Walmart. We worked at a factory 30 minutes away and the factory provided a bus for the commute. This worked out great for G/S because of the day/night cycle - the bus ride started at 5am and we left the factory to make our way home at 330 pm. So I always had half an hour of uninterupted playtime in the early mornings and afternoons.
- Oracle of Seasons -- I adored it but eventually due to drama was unable to finish it before I got in a situation where I needed to sell everything I owned. I started it up on Switch and maybe I'll finish someday. I'd be there day 1 for a remake though.
