I know it's not exactly horror, well vaguely perhaps, but does anyone have recommendations for films like Beyond the Black Rainbow?

The film is the complete opposite of that hahah

Well, as you saw in my earlier post I don't like that type of stuff as far as "torture porn" material etc. What I was saying is that it was very well done. I am a fan of good film regardless of genre. If you can make a 5 minute film in a suburban garage that good I have faith in your feature film.

Arch skeptic Professor Phillip Goodman embarks upon a terror-filled quest when he stumbles across a long-lost file containing details of three cases of inexplicable 'hauntings'.

This looks right up my street!

Shudder had the full run of Tales from the Darkside, not sure if they still do.

Joe Hill was behind an attempt to bring TftD back to TV but it fizzled out.

There was talk of a new Friday the 13th series that would actually feature Jason but I guess it died too. The setup was kind of a "what if there actually was a Jason and the movies were loosely based on him" thing. Might have sucked but now we'll probably never know.

The cable shows were decent but went overboard on boobs and gore where the regular tv shows were better stories but with no boobs or limited gore felt hamstrung.

So I finally watched Jigsaw...what in the actual fuck was that garbage. Ugh.

Only highlight was Tobin Bell.

Also, what's with these movies to always have an asshole dude..the one who jammed three needles into the woman.

Looking at the financial side I see that it was fairly successful, so they will probably make more.

10 million dollar budget with a 102 million boxoffice. Not bad.

You knew going in it was going to be shit. Everyone did... that is the curse of horror fans.

Late to reply, sorry! Thank you all for the comments!

So, I gave up on Saw after the first 3... I loved them but I was just done with them. Cube is one of the greats for sure. If you are looking for recommendations for "torture porn" type stuff I can give you a few. I have personally drifted away from it as I got older but I can point you to some that I enjoyed.

-Wolf Creek
-Hostel
-The hills have eyes (the original and the remake)
-I spit on your grave
-Audition
-Cannibal Holocaust

Those are the popular ones that come to me right away but I'm sure some fellow horror ERA users can give you some more obscure ones.

I've seen a few of these, but I'll check out the rest, thanks!

I made a short film a few years ago that might be right up your alley:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hl1MVtgfWIw

That was pretty good stuff. The ending was not what I expected, so kudos to that!

I am not sure if this counts, and I'm not a fan of the "torture porn" wave in general, but it's close... have you seen the French film Martyrs?

I have not. And the term "torture porn" is really the only thing I've ever heard it called. Because it's not quite "horror" in the traditional sense. Ish.

Really dislike the term but if you want the best in the genre check out Grotesque - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1352369/

This is solid budget, Japanese torture movie at it's finest.

Again - the term is a bit of a turnoff, but how else do you classify the SAW or Hostel series? It's unfortunate but true.

And that's another one I've not heard of, so I'll check it out, thanks!

Yeah, said it in my spoiler...Tobin Bell was awesome as expected, but the rest of the movie wasn't good. And there's always an asshole because the people that Jigsaw takes are always assholes. It's the most obvious tell every single time, too.

==========================

Unrelated to that, I talked about this in the previous thread on the other forum, but I rewatched my favorite horror movie again last night.

Midnight_meat_train_ver2.jpg

Sooooooooo fucking good. I love everything about this movie. It sounds like an amateur porno, and I always get weird looks when I tell people the name of it...But hot damn is it incredible.

I mean it's fine if you or anyone calls it that. I don't. I just call them torture movies. Same difference, I just think throwing the word porn after it is silly. I like torture movies, I like porn, I'm not gonna get off on torture porn though hah.

I should watch Midnight Meat Train again. Been a while.

OK, torture movies is probably the better term. Torture porn definitely has....Other connotations.

I think I am going to roll the dice and order a used copy of Kathryn Bigelow's Near Dark. I really want to see it after hearing about it.

I love it. Such a great film, the feels you get from it and how you can't ever really tell what era it's supposed to be set in make it amazing to me.

yeah there's a lot of stuff that movie did right like what you mentioned. obviously the ost is great but also the basic concept is just so strong - just a THING constantly walking towards you, you can't really mess that up, but what david robert mitchell did with that was apply heavy doses of character, atmosphere and a plodding, lived-in pace to even exceed that excellent concept's potential. to me it's a pretty special movie.

Amazon added Fright Night Part II (the original, not the shitty direct-to-video sequel to the equally terrible remake) to Prime Video, not only in HD but thankfully in the correct aspect ratio. Check it out if you haven't!

Thanks for letting us know... This is a real gem! I will say it and I will never back down. I love the 2011 remake of Fright Night!

Uranus, get it?!? YOUR. ANUS.
Tragedy Girls was a very welcome surprise. Darkly humorous with a biting social commentary layered underneath. Check out our review (excerpt under the poster)

Now, there's an obvious attempt at keeping things light, evidenced by the tongue-in-cheek script, the frivolous way in which violence and death are tackled, and the caricature-like cliche of a supporting cast; and it's wholly appreciated given the subject matter, but the skin-deep smiles and winks that Tragedy Girls likes to wear on its sleeve work doubly so as indicators for the darker nature of the film's themes. Remember earlier the questions I alluded to, and the concepts they're framed against? "How do we measure self worth?", "Who will remember me when I'm gone?" "What am I, if not the likes on my Facebook posts?" "What's wrong with having heroes?" Context is key here. Otherwise what seem like harmless - yet important - questions, become tainted with a chilling cause and even more chilling answers. "By taking a count of our victims", "Those we've destroyed, and their loved ones", "A sociopath", and "Nothing, except when it's Ted Bundy and Ed Gein".

Am I the only person who likes the remake of Fright Night but not the original?

Probably. But this a judgement free zone.

Haven't seen the remake of Fright Night yet. Need to watch part 2 and Shudder has 1 so I may do a double feature this weekend. Only ever saw part one.

Interesting factoid: Fright Night Part III didn't happen because of the Menendez brothers murders. Ain't life weird? :P

I'm moving a few hours away so had to pack all my dvds away. Going to have to resort to streaming for a while. What's good on Netflix right now?

I loved this movie, one of my favorites of 2017. The tone reminded me a lot of Heathers. It's getting a blu ray release from Gunpowder & Sky this Friday I believe.

I'm a RZ apologist and that was fucking awful. Retread of his other stuff and just flat out lazy. His worse movie.
To be fair, it was a crowdfunded movie that was basically conceptualized as a retread of his other stuff. It has its moments, but I won't say there aren't a lot of issues with that movie. Chief among them (plotwise)...
How the fuck does the game of 31 even make sense? What's the point of betting on a survivor if nobody has ever won it? Wouldn't everyone just bet that nobody survives every year?
I enjoyed a lot of the visuals, I enjoyed Jeff Daniel Phillips and Richard Brake, and it's always cool to see Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Judy Geeson and Meg foster again, but he really needs to stop relying on his wife to carry movies.

I mean, all in all, yeah, I guess it was his worst movie to date, but I still didn't really hate it. Plus, given its genesis and intent, it was hard to really expect much out of it.

Anyone heard anything about Winchester?

No reviews the day before a movie opens is always worrying.

I did it, I can finally say that I watched Dead Alive, and it was fucking great.
