In a recent interview, Housemarque´s head honcho Ilari Kuittinen said that he don´t believes that the game will be a success

"The problem is with us we always have to change our idea. We originally thought that the game would be a premium game but now it should be free to play. And do we have enough content to do that? I don't know," he admitted. "We're kind of a bit short of money to fully realise what we want to do as a launch edition of the game. We'll see.

"It is tough. Whether we're going to succeed, it's unlikely because of the tough competition."

Kuittinen is hopeful that Stormdivers has at least taught Housemarque some valuable lessons in terms of running a game as a service and working in the multiplayer market. But after 24 years in the industry, there's still the realisation that games can take too long to make, especially when other developers are chasing the same audience.

Eee... yeah, the game wasn't catching much interest before and its whole battle royale with abilities angle already seems snuffed by Apex. This is looking rough for them.

I'm sure they would have loved to of continued to make arcade games. They just never sold enough for them to keep paying the bills. Hence the change.

I feel for them, I loved their past output. I also think Stormdivers will be a failure, but I thought that as soon as I saw it. It doesn't look appealing to me at all.

I also think they should have continued making arcade games instead of chasing trends. That way I would continue to support them.

The thing that worries me the most is that they don't seem to have a clear vision of where they're headed or what they want to do.

I don't know what I'd do in their situation, either. Almost all genres that can be done with small budgets are saturated.

The fact that every single fan of Housemarque was dismayed and knew the game would flop in the incredibly competive BR market when Stormdivers was announced says it all. It's not that the actual game looks bad, but there's no way they'll be able to get updates out and get traction like all the other big devs that do BR are capable of doing.

Hopefully they can repurpose the tech and mechanics they've made for some arcade-like coop shooter game instead.

I love these guys. It's just very unlucky because they started with the game before battle Royale was a thing. And they are very honest about their game.

It's a tough situation, it's not like they can compete with Fortnite, PUBG and Apex either, when chasing trends.

It's just a sorry world we live in when truly amazing arcade games don't sell well :(

Yeah I don't think this is the path, but purely arcade stuff just doesn't sell wide in 2019.

I still have faith in their talent though. I just think they need to nail down the right direction for the studio that fits their skill set.

Really sad to see. They are a great studio, but their bread and butter isn't really viable and BR is pretty much impossible to break into at this point, Battlefield barely even made a dent in the current BR market, I don't think they stand a chance. I hope they pull through and go on to find great success.

Like... man, look at Alienation. I'd buy four copies of that game on Steam if it released there, and I know a bunch of other people who would too. But it's ~only~ on PlayStation.

Then you have games like Nex Machina, which are trying to be a hardcore arcade game... in a world where very few people play those games? This is a game you can't even fuckin save in, last I knew. Man, I got chronic pain issues, there's no way I'm gonna run around playing a twin-stick shooter I can't save in.

Plus, Steam is drowning in twin-stick games. Housemarque making the only good twin-sticks doesn't mean it's enough, right? I love their games and they're the best, but those games are impossible to sell.

Housemarque has to make games that have better hooks than "the prettiest twin-stick shooters in the world," and they have to release them on platforms that will either push them (like ID@Xbox does with things like Cuphead) or with a publisher who will (like Annapurna, but I heard at GDC that they're not funding games right now since Larry Ellison had to take over to stop them from losing money). Or they have to start making games that have broader appeal.

It sucks, because if I was an insane billionaire, I'd literally just pay Housemarque to make like 20 different twin-stick shooters for the next two decades. I love those games.

Stormdivers needed to be out there yesterday to even have a small chance. I don't know what took them so long they only beta test it right now, and th servers don't even work 24/7.

I think it's pretty clear what they want. Make games that are fun and profitable. Unfortunately their fun games aren't profitable and what they thought would be profitable, they don't think will be fun.

They got unlucky. A shame, but they should've stuck to what they actually wanted to make, instead of chasing trends.

Even if there's no market for those kinds of games on PS4, there are other options. They could've released it as an actual arcade game that then got a later console release (like Killer Queen/Killer Queen Black).

I really do hope they find some success with this game, tho I dont see myself playing it. I loved their previous games and I'm sad they've stopped making those kind of games.. and they're making such big changes that the few fans they have probably won't be interested in this new game, idk. I hope it works out for them!

Resogun 2 for ps5 release, please.

Sad thing is he's right. I love Housemarque's games but this just seems destined to end up on the scrapheap. There's no excitement for it and releasing a F2P BR game with a team of 15 people is just crazy.

TBH I think releasing purely on PC is a mistake. I think if it had been a console title it would have likely got more coverage/traction.

Yeah. I liked Nex Machina, but not being able to save was unfortunate. You could save in the SSD games.

It's very sad to see people work towards something they think will be a failure. That will surely hurt morale with the devs on the project.

They can make competent platformers as well. Outland was really good, imo.

Maybe they could find success in the same general area as Hollow Knight, Ori, Monster Boy, Dead Cells, Celeste etc., they all seem to be succesful.

But that's if they're at all interested in going in that direction...

Played most of their previous games which i liked alot. Stormdivers isn't my cup of tea, but i wish the studio all the best.

What is the other new game mentioned?

Did Outland do especially poorly for them or something? I've always wondered why they never followed up on that sort of game.

I know this sounds a bit daft but I seriously want them to take a long, good look at the games Devolver publishes, many DD games prioritise gameplay and fun first just like HM do but without pushing graphics and tech hard, and they make money.

It's time to re-prioritise Housemarque.

Not GamePass directly (PS+ in their case) I do think services like them make their type of arcade games quite a tough sell nowadays, as they pretty much always came to PS+, similar problem TellTale had, where if I wasn't 100% sold there was very little chance I'd buy instead of just wait for it to be "free" don't think there's any fixing that now either, especially not with even more services popping up.

Do they push the visual tech that far though? I'd say they're a very gameplay focused dev, but they opt for a streamlined arcade experience.

It will probably be a huge failure. The writing was on the wall with the announcement, they have no idea what they want to do other than to make a game that makes lots of money.

Yeah, they're in a difficult spot and I'm not sure how I would get out of it in their shoes. They make amazing games in a now super niche genre that primarily release on only Sony systems which don't really push indie games particularly hard in the first place. I would love it if they went back to making arcade games but I can't see that market growing anytime soon unless something crazy happens so it would probably be the death of the company in the long term.

Like I honestly don't know what direction they pivot to? Is their best hope to chase trends with such a small team and hope that it blows up? Probably not but who knows. I hope whatever their other game in development is that it will be enough to prop up the studio's continued existence as they have so much talent and potential. It's a shame most of their biggest titles are published by Sony as I could see them doing very well on Switch and PC.

I also love how honest and candid this interview is, it's something that I would love to see more of even if it makes no business sense.
