I finally redid the first level, exploring it thoroughly and that was quite enjoyable, I stumbled upon a little spirit but missed it, so I did the stage again and it only give rupees.

Are you talking about Blupees? Yes, if you hit them they drop Rupees because Blupees are full of Rupees.

I haven't played a Musou game since forever so this seems nice to me - lot of different quests and things to do actually. I like that this is a prequel to BOTW so it's quite familiar.

But holy crap, the framerate...

Oh my god I just did the second mission and Zelda is SO MUCH FUN. I love how crazy powerful she is and her moveset is so ridiculous and fun.
Like her weak point smash against the guardian she summons a goddamn trolley with Magnesis, freezes it with Stasis and then hits it so many times with Cryonis it rockets into the boss and destroys it. I may have screamed? The movesets are already so creative just based on the 3 characters we can play as, I can't wait to see the rest!

Though I can easily see myself making Zelda my main like in the original game lmao

I found it kinda hard to have a main in the first game, tons of missions required certain characters if you wanted the rank reward.

Although my Link and Sheik ended up
MUCH higher than everyone else, so I must have found a way lol.

Yeah it was for pretty much every level that didn't have a strict character requirement :P
I enjoyed playing as most characters in the original game though (with the exception of Tingle, fuck him)

I'd never played a Musou game before so wasn't sure what to expect from this. I loved Breath of the Wild so I was hoping the setting would help to win me over.

It didn't click with me at all. At first it's a novelty to string a few attacks together and send enemies flying, but I felt like I'd had my fill after one mission. I felt pretty bored after that. The performance didn't bother me as much as some but ultimately it didn't matter.

Not a different weapon type exactly, but you can get a boomerang. All it changes though is your basic strong attack though, the rest of the moveset is the same
I wish boomerangs allowed for more throwing attacks. The one you get is pretty enjoyable on its own—seeing it scores of bokoblins get blasted back from one throw is great.

here's hoping you can get a giant boomerang in the final game and that it has more unique moves. I want to pull of moves like from God of War 2018

The problem with the first couple missions in Musou games (especially on anything below the hardest default difficulty) is that it really doesn't properly show off the core gameplay loop. It won't be long before the stages stop being basic point A to point B romps with no threat of failure aside from death.

I was playing some of the OG Hyrule Warriors yesterday and let me describe a stage I did.

The goal itself was pretty simple, there are two messengers you need to escort to an exit point on the map in order to receive reinforcements and gain access to the boss. But there was one big issue, you start at the center of the stage and there are enemies coming at your base from every angle. So just stick around and take care of them as they come to you before escorting the messengers, right? Will in one corner of the map there's a summoner causing an infinite amount of hostile cuccos to spawn, in another corner there's an outpost spawning powerful buffed generals that can tear through the messengers, and the messengers themselves can't be directed so they will push forward without you. The key to success is making proper use of your three characters as well as proper prioritization of threats.

That may sound tiring for a full stage, but the stage itself wasn't that long (took me around 7 minutes) and it had great pacing. If you take out the summoner the cuccos join your side, capture the outpost spawning powerful generals and they stop spawning, and once the messengers reach their goal you get a large amount of reinforcements. By the time you're heading to fight the boss you've completely reversed the situation and put the boss in the same position you were in at the start.

Stages like that are what make the OG HW so good IMO.

Tbh, it's easier for me to decide on a game from the first game than it is from the demo so far. Everyone confirmed for Age of Calamity so far look so fun to play, while there are only select few characters I truly enjoy playing in HW. 90% of my playthrough is me just breezing through maps as my Level 120+ Ganondorf (Trident), sometimes opting for Yuga because he's also broken, or Ghirahim because I like Ghirahim lol

Booted it up yesterday and I was very disappointed with the visual presentation and framerate. Everything is shimmering, muddy and framerate is consistently bad, though at least it's not stuttering.

That said, it's a bit of a shame since there is a huge potential for this to be the best musou game I've played in recent years, it certainly captured the style of BotW. Despite the bad framerate, controls are pretty reponsive and combat is satisfying, being able to stasis a group of enemies and chuck them in the direction of more enemies, where everything reacts to impact nicely, is pretty well done and fun as hell.

I really hope this improves by the time of release, otherwise, it's gonna be a wait for me, at least until rumored switch pro becomes a reality, too much of a potential in here to sour it with bad technical aspects.

This is the first Switch game I've played that is such low resolution that it isn't even playable in handheld mode

I honestly dont understand how people are playing this

I was actually enjoying the gameplay quite a bit, but it is just completely unplayable

People have different levels of tolerance for resolution and framerate. To each their own.

Is there a date for previews/impressions for the game?

I wonder about the frame rate, I am a little tempted to cancel and get the voucher preorder and get Xenoblade instead...

I wonder if that wacko horse God will pop up in this...
I would expect them to stuff in as many BotW cameos as they can.

Speaking of framerate... help a guy understand.

Are we talking about the same thing we (or at least I) used to call "slowdown" or "flicker" back in the day? Remember the old Mega Man games, for instance, when the screen would start flickering and everything started moving slowly? Is that basically what it means for framerate to drop? I notice it, for instance, when the camera starts moving slowly (haven't played AoC demo yet--I meant in other games). Is that low framerate?

Kind of. Slowdown in old games is a bit different in that the processor of those consoles sometimes could not handle the task of rendering everything in a single frame from a game. So a fail state happens and the frame is rendered again. Thus the game essentially slows down trying to catch up with what needs to be displayed. Not the best explanation, but low framerates have a similar feeling.

So playing a modern game, if it "feels" like the game is suddenly moving slower (again, I notice this mainly with cameras--I'm a freak when it comes to moving the camera around), then that's low framerate? I do notice that, then. But it doesn't tend to bother me very much. Haven't played the AoC demo yet, though, only speaking in general terms here.

With modern games the process of rendering graphics puts pressure on the consoles CPU and GPU. If the game is trying to render too much that the console cannot handle the amount of frames displayed per second lowers because in can only process so much into the display. Turning the camera on games usually puts strain on consoles because they have to render a brand new image very quickly.

Okay. Thank you very much for that explanation. Now I know what everyone's talking about when they go, "Framerate!"

Like I said, I do feel the effects of it when it changes, but it rarely ever bothers me.

Hmmm, if you need some comparisons, notably if you don't exactly know the difference between a 30 and a 60 FPS framerate, I guess you can take a look at this video comparison between the original Hyrule Warriors Wii U and Switch's versions:

For Age of Calamity, we know the framerate is not 60 FPS. The issue is that the game is capped at 30 FPS (which is not too big of an issue, although for action games I generally want 60 FPS, and overall I much, much prefer 60 FPS in games), and seems to quite frequently dip to 25 or below FPS, thus affecting the gameplay's experience (those dips seem to happen more often on the first map, and when Impa is in play, because of her clones):

Now, the demo version could use an older, not nearly as optimized build, but we honestly don't know. We won't have definite answers before the actual game is out and some tests are run.

In this last video, you can see that FPS is quite good on small maps (30 FPS), but that during co-op mode in the first big map, the game struggles to keep it at 20 FPS in some instances (and that's with Impa having only 2 clones out):

An additional framerate test can be found below, and, well, they aren't happy with the performance:
