Happy about my results this month :)

Could have been even more optimistic in regards to the Switch (underestimated the Mar10 effect) and overestimated the effect that such good games releasing can still have for the PS4. Let's see what Days Gone can do this month, probably I will underestimate it this time. Are there Days Gone bundles?

EDIT: Just took a look at the point system. I suppose it is currently 33.33 points per system and everything else is still the same?

I gotta say, I'm just bewildered at out how Playstation has been playing out their hand the last few years towards the "end" of the PS4 era. And to be clear, I'm totally playing armchair analyst here and I don't have access to fancy charts and data that probably show that this is the "right" move. With all that said...

The Playstation has seemingly gone completely conservative in regards to pricing the last few years (besides the few days of bonkers Black Friday deals). This is a console that came out for $400 in 2013, and 5.5 years later, it only retails for $300 and currently isn't bundled with any games. In no way do i intend this to be "console-war-ish," but a few years ago they were in position to absolutely dominate the video game market with a struggling Nintendo coming off the Wii U and Xbox's struggles. Since then, they've played it so conservatively with an increasingly aging product that I think they've largely given their competitors a lot of chances to get back in to the competition, and to their credit, Nintendo, and to a lesser extent, Microsoft, have taken advantage of it.

While I know lowering the price just to race for gross sales isn't the financially right move, it doesn't seem like a $300 console in 2019 seems like it either. We are on the brink of the PS5, XB1 2, Stadia and revision(s) to the hugely popular Switch in this increasingly digital era where locking in players to a consoles ecosystem is more important than ever. For instance, I expect(ed) Microsoft and Sony to go huge on deals leading up to the next console launches to sort of "trojan horse" expected future sales of the next gen consoles as those consumers get invested and attached and sign up for services on the PS4/XB1.

Instead, sales are down nearly 30% YOY. In my opinion, a PS4 for $300 in 2019 is a "bad" deal, especially when it has had periods in past years (when it was a newer product) where it has sold for $200 or $250 while being bundled with new games. While I know as a console ages it is natural for it to decrease in demand, but certainly a $300 PS4 in 2019 is doing it no favors when the Switch, PC and the aggressiveness of the XB1 are offering increased competition regarding price/gaming. I think the demand is still there (as we've seen with Black Friday deals), the pricing is just so far out of wack with where I'd expect it to be in 2019.

To be clear, obviously the PS4 has killed it this gen. It is just that I think they knee-capped themselves a bit from becoming a full-blown phenomenon like the PS2 because at how conservative they've played it regarding pricing, which has had the adverse effect of bolstering their competition when they had them down on the mat.

PS4 does have Days Gone which looks like its going to be a bit hit for Sony and may push some PS4s. I would imagine you get a modest boost with the new Xbox but what do I know about sales haha.

I'm still having a hard time determining who that console is for. You can get a regular XBO S for the same price or cheaper and you're not handicapping yourself by removing all physical media. I've been tossing around the idea of getting an XBO—if they ever go on sale super cheap—just to replace my X360. But with no disc drive, I'd lose out on my X360 disc-based BC. And it's not super cheap. If you already own an XBO, why would you buy one of these? If you have been waiting to buy an XBO, why would you buy this over the XBO S? $50 is not worth losing Blu-rays, some BC and physical games that might be cheaper than digital at any given moment. I guess I can see the SAD going on sale super cheap during Black Friday, but that's not going to help May's NPD. I guess I don't get this strategy.

Yeah, but going with this method is that playing out (I honestly don't know)? The question I'm pondering is the "high" day one price and potential day one profit they see from that initial sale "worth it" if this causes less people to buy a PS4, thus potential customers not signing up for Playstations Plus/Now/digital sales? Are they losing potential customers to their competition due to the increased price?

Obviously, they should be trying to find that happy medium where they are still profitable on day 1 AND the consumer demand is still there. A 30% drop might be showing that they haven't found this balance.

I agree that the PS4 has been a behemoth when it comes to profitability, and this is mostly because of the explosion of PSN, Plus and digital. Is chasing that "tail" of recurring service payments and ecosystem purchases "worth it" if they have an increased amount of sales that they make less of a day 1 profit from? What I think this gen has shown us is I'd rather bet on getting an increased audience potentially buying into the ecosystem rather than the potential of making more $ day one at the expense of potentially losing out on customers to the competition.

All that said, they're making crazy money now. Just think they have the potential to make an even crazier amount of money if they don't play it as conservative as they are currently.

if the revision is in fact a cheaper version that allows nintendo to bring the price down to 200 bucks (while still being profitable on hardware? disgusting), the trigger isn't pulled too early but right in time to flank animal crossing and pokémon. this mixture is highly explosive.
i just hope they can produce enough hardware or we will see a civil-war-like situation.

I agree in terms of Switch Pro - a more powerful Switch really isn't needed for this year, latest rumors also suggest this one might be delayed to next year.

They absolutely need the cheaper Switch révisions though - Animal Crossing and Pokemon won't be able to reach their full potential without it.

The thing is, I think Sony has a long term plan for the PS4 going into the PS5 gen. What we're seeing is the PS4 as a current gen system, but a "Phase 2" is going to happen in the launch year of the PS5 that markets it as a super affordable gaming platform.

I mean there are rumors that MS is opting for a cheap next gen SKU that is more along the lines of the power we see in the mid-gen consoles, but the PS4 systems will remain that entry point platform into the Playstation brand years into when the PS5 is out.

People are forgetting that Sony has a next gen ad campaign that they need to finance and they are always extremely expensive. With the way that Sony has been penny pinching, passing on 2019 third party marketing, and keeping their platform prices high, the only conclusion is that they plan to spend enormous amounts of money to market the PS5 and have the biggest console launch in their history.

Everything they are doing is in preparation of their next platform

I think you are forgetting a very practical limitation: Sony is troubled with stock issues for at least a year, when the God of War hype started. They even had to up their ps4 forecast from 16m to 17.5m that financial year. So it's possible they just can't produce more consoles (stock still seems rather slim), hence a price drop would be foolish.
Also, the New Financial year just started. Should there really be a constant steep decline in Hardware sales, they will do price promotions. April 26 will be very interesting in that regard, since sony will reveal their financial forecast, including how many ps4 they expect to sell within the next 12 months.

That was a mistranslation. That article was talking about a next gen Switch, not any Switch pro
Best source we have right now is WSJ saying there will be two models launching this year
