Yea I'm confident to say SMT V has a shot of potentially selling more than Monster Hunter Stories 2.

The only thing I could see maybe slightly hurting it's legs a bit is the Pokémon releases and even then I don't see that happening since they both target different audiences.

I believe it was 500k lol

200k was at the begining of the Switch era, around Xenoblade 2 launch which was going to stay niche for some people.

Didnt take long for XC2 to break that barrier too.

Japan only but I can see it outdoing it in the West as well just on Switch only.

It depends on the western departments of Nintendo and Atlus continuing the good marketing they set up. I just need them to officially show off the English dub for the game and it will help a lot.

SMT IV opened at 188k, but do we have an estimate for the digital share in Japan for MHS2? Assuming SMTV reviews well, they should be in the same ballpark for Switch-only Japan sales.

PlayStation has started to lose ground comparing to Switch at physical releases. The only thing that helps it not to lose touch completely is localisation of western titles.

This year should be the new low for the PS ecosystem. I am expecting growth in 2022 given the significant difference in release slates.

The question for next year is whether the "quiet" period we've had this year in terms of software sales is going to have a knock on effect on future software, something I think we have seen with Nintendo platforms in the past.

Yes I think it will be the case for PS4 software while PS5 will still have the novelty/audience that won't move out in a year.

I get what you mean, but with how bad software sales currently are on PS5, before worrying about still having the novelty / audience moving out, SIE should worry about having an audience first :P

The sad thing about this is that scalpers ar3 still preventing a valuable part of Sony's audience to move to PS5. Which lowers overall software sales, which extends the cross-gen period / reduce the number of PS5 SKU...

It is a vicious circle.

The new reality in Japan is that for the first time since Sony entered video games market PlayStation is not anymore the primary console for most multiplatform games and as was said since first years of Switch every exclusive Sony loses to Nintendo shrinks PlayStation market share even more.

I'm not very positive 2022 will see notable improvement at PlayStation software sales with PS4 declining further and FFXVI looking to be the only big release. Sony is the publisher that will have sizable increase at output but Japan doesn't care a lot for many of these releases.

Yeah sure that will happen. The low software sales are a direct result of disinterest in the games and also the platform in general. If the hardware sales are good you will have a constant active user base eager to buy new games. That leads to more software sales which again raises hardware sales and so forth. I do believe that only one big hit can kickstart it but after that you need a few more hits along the way to sustain it. I don't see anything positive for Playstation in Japan at the moment.

Between Elden Ring, the FF games, the DQ games and more, it would very surprising if 2022 isn't a notable increase over 2021 which got so far, not a single game selling over 300k.

I'm interested in seeing how much Elden Ring will do. It seems there's more overlap with the gamer that played Dark Souls than Sekiro. DQ games I expect to have sales favouring the Switch more than PS. This isn't a DQ XI 3DS x PS4 situation where the two skus were appealing on their own.

The issue is that Sony only cares about big Japanese games like FF as NISA told us. The same is true in the west to a lesser extent, which is why indies seem to be gravitating more to MS and Nintendo.

I don't think anything from this year has outsold Village yet outside of MH Rise, but that will change soon.
