I'm not necessarily opposed to it but given all the other Smash clones, has there ever been one that was remotely close to the quality of Nintendo's?

Sony tried with All Stars but failed.
Rivals of Aether has Ori as a guest character. It has 340,000 owners.
http://steamspy.com/app/383980
Brawlhalla has 9m owners.
http://steamspy.com/app/291550

Keep in mind these games don't have massive budgets.
Smash is big at Evo so it would fit with MS pushing e-sports. MS should definetly give it a shot.

I just think there are other genres and subgenres Microsoft would be better suited to make, unless of course there was a talented studio that was somehow passionate in making one.

Most characters mentioned above are either old/unused characters or not really suited for it. They have some, but not nearly enough.
Who would you like to see in a MS fighting game?
Chief
Cortana
Arbiter
Marcus fenix
Fulgore
Joanna dark
Drew from Scalebound( Dante clone)
Minecraft guy
Cuphead
Ori
Conker
Ryse guy
Sunset overdrive character
Banjo
Terry crew crackdown character
Phantom dust character

I don't want to be that guy, but there's a reason no major publisher tries to compete with Smash.

Smash is the king, always will be, I sincerely hope MS doesn't even attempt it/waste time/resources.

I believe Bandai Namco and Capcom are the only devs capable of delivering a Smash copy. They have the expertise and the IPs.

Will they do it? Probably not because financially it might destroy them.

Get rid of Drew since scalebound is cancelled, phantom dust as well since they cancelled that. Ryse and Sunset only if they plan on a sequel.

Also how could you forget about Rash?

What's that little poster in the background? Looks like a Recore corebot

Shinobi's Wushu Studios Twitter account:

Joking... Def. not a Recore hint lol, trying to figure out what the studio that Shinobi works at is up to :P

So after some zooming and enhancements I've deduced the following:

-A bag of curry noodles, soda, and Monster energy drinks scattered across the table
-A can of dog food
-A development studio that looks like my basement
-Car keys
-Wacom Tablets
-A Switch carrying case
-The UDK program with various reference books to the side
-Someone in dire need of a lint roller

Hmmm... I wonder what this could all point to...

Phantom Dust came out, only the reboot was cancelled.

At least one character from Sea of Thieves would be a must. Also Joule, Lucky, Vince, Jack Joyce, and a Grunt.

And now you lost me.
We already had a glimpse about what Days Gone is, and it's nothing special. Like, at all.

it will be an action packed beautiful zombie game, but from the little we know so far, storytelling masterpiece it ain't.

I was the one saying SoD2 is more interesting than Days Gone and i stand by my point. SoD pushes button other zombie games mostly ignored while days gone looks like yet another zombie slasher. Obviously could be wrong when the game releases but nothing about it changed my mind so far - in turn, i already know what to expect from SoD, and getting it bigger and better is what i'm looking forward in a zombie game. Feel free to disagree as much as you want. I just find funny how much you complain about SoD being generic and saying DG won't. Oh yeah the rebel moto guy fighting to survive in a crazy world with zombies and gangs while caring for his family/friends, what an original concept never seen before anywhere

Days Gone will be to Bend what Horizon was to Guerrilla Games - their coming out party. Take my word for it, the story and characters will easily surpass State of Decay 2 and I can say that with 100% confidence. Also, I never called State of Decay 2 generic but it's not original, innovative or revolutionary either. Neither game are and to be perfectly honest, not a single game this generation has been in my opinion. And for the record, im actually looking forward to State of Decay 2 and expecting it to be an 8+ for me.

You got some inside information never released to the public then because nothing, and i repeat in caps, NOTHING about the grizzled moto dude we know so far gives me 1% of your confidence. But who knows, maybe i'll be ashamed of my words and deeds when the game comes out

No, I don't have any insider information but what I do have is what I have in every game that was developed by a Sony owned studio and that's confidence. They haven't let me down yet in two generations. A few second parties, yes but not their owned studios. I can guarantee that Days Gone won't let me down and maybe, it will actually surprise you if/when you play it.

Mind telling me what these other games that do what State of Decay does might be?

Because if we are talking about zombie games that put the focus largely on community simulation in a post apocalyptic open world rather than simply killing zombies, then id say State of Decay is pretty original regardless of what you think.

To see what SoD2 has the potential to do in story-telling, see this thread: https://twitter.com/austin_walker/status/974106214413029376

Text here, but the screenshots are nice:
"God, just saw an amazing thing in IGN's footage of State of Decay 2 footage. So, the procgen characters have morale scores composed of various things: Do they have enough food? Good facilities? Friends? And in /everyone's/ case they had a little plus for something called Eymen."

"So I'm like, "What the hell is an Eymen," and a second later, Oh, this dude is Eymen. And then I see that because he's leveled up enough he's unlocked his "hero" bonus, "Party Planning" which gives a tiny bonus of morale! Cool. Then I see what's under it. What the FUCK Eymen!" (screenshot shows his final unlockable skill is Warlord)

"This dude's arc is: Pre-apocalypse, he's an cake decorator and environmentalist. Then the zombies happen, and he's like "Don't worry everybody, I know how to make cakes." And everybody loves this guy! Then somewhere down the line he becomes a fucking Walking Dead villain."

People looking for a linear narrative (which I assume is what Days Gone is going for) is not going to find that in SoD2. It's a simulation game at heart, trying to make you attached to procedurally generated characters, like XCOM. If anything I hope there's a mode with no 3rd person action at all that let's me play it as a pure sim. I am really not interested in debating SoD2 vs DG when they are so different. I wish both games the best of luck.

Isnt Killer instinct the microsoft fighting game. They own it

I don't see why that would matter. We already saw them moving toward Microsoft Fighterz with all the DLC for KI. It could literally just be equivalent of KI4.

I'm not sure of the size of Iron Galaxy but they haven't done anything significant since Season 3 ended. Adam Boyes became CEO not too long ago, so it's not like it's some tiny indie studio.

From what I can tell, they're hiring for a big project (AAA). Job description says they'd like experience working on PS4/XO, so I'm not sure if that rules an Xbox exclusive.

Requirements:

  • Led Design of at least 3 AAA games
  • 10+ years of professional experience designing games
  • Hands-on experience in Unreal Engine 4/Unity a plus
  • Excellent interpersonal and inspirational skills
  • Must be highly organized and detail oriented with great time management skills
  • Ability to easily work well within a larger design team and create consensus with those around you
  • Outstanding communication/presentation skills that sells the vision to fellow team members, product management, and external partners
  • You love getting the details right
  • Self-motivated

I'm still pretty salty about Amazon buying Double Helix. KI and that Strider game they put out were both very decent. Showed a lot of potential. They haven't done anything since 2014. Amazon's just one of this companies that buys first and develops a plan second. Very frustrating.

Here's a roster I prepared earlier lol
Of course, you'd have to swap the irrelevant characters for characters like the Recore chick, Sea of Thieves pirates, etc.
eD1fId3.jpg

Hell, Microsoft have enough characters even just using their Rare catalogue.
qXgoFYz.jpg

I would like to see a Microsoft brawler, but in the style of Power Stone or something entirely new, rather than a Super Smash Bros. clone.
This would be great, for multiple reasons.
Man I miss Powerstone.

The Fable Playground has an interesting story behind it. I was told, by 5 different people, that Phil and the team did pass on Playgrounds New IP. But later on after Playground couldn't get funding from other publishers, they approached MS again and Phil told them they would fund the project if it was Fable. The studio voted on it and decided to turn that new AAA Open world RPG into Fable. Is that the true account of what happened? I don't know but its what I heard.

Why did they passed on it, Playground wanted the IP?

like I said, I don't think you say lies for viewer's or anything like that and you genuinely do believe it or was told by someone you trusted. You do seem like a genuine guy, I wasn't calling you out or anything if you took it that way :p just as always take it with a grain of salt

To your post before you edited it. Sounds a bit strange that noone wanted to fund it (Bethesda, EA and maybe even cdpr themselves seem like they would jump on the chance) but given all the people saying their new IP was multiplatform it's definitely a possibility, or a hell of a coincidence lol

I stated this in another thread but I do hope Sea Of Thieves does well. Right now Fortnite has the attention and its doing rather well. I love it personally. I do hope it gets good reviews as well. I look forward to the coming week.

Rare needs a good hit.

Did Spencer see a demo of Playground's new IP before passing on it or he just straight out passed on it? Hope this doesn't turn out to be one of those situations where a new IP gets passed on/cancelled in favor of an existing IP but in the end, could prove to be the wrong move.

I'm expecting around an 80 metacritic, decent retail/digital sales as I think the majority will play it on Game Pass and if they like it, probably take advantage of that 20% off three months later.

Hmmm why'd he edit?

To your points: EA is taking a break from single player games, Bethesda already has a pretty full line up in terms of SP, and CDPR isn't really a publisher.

Plus their could be more to their story: maybe the terms with companies that did make them offers weren't good?

Interesting tidbit I heard from Craig Duncan on one of the many many podcasts he's done in the last couple weeks (can't remember which one). He said that the Kinect Sports games they made sold 10 million copies and that Rare Replay was 'extremely successful' (I assume the latter is based on a ROI benchmark that it was a cheap project).

Not that I think it matters much, cause I'm pretty confident SoT is going to be very successful, but the narrative that Rare has "needed a win" is probably something spun from the hardcore audience rather than actually the case financially (obviously that audience was largely not interested in Kinect Sports, so it's not exactly a surprise).

It's also something to keep in mind if that Forza Kart racer is indeed a project that's happening. While I'd count myself among the group not personally interested much in that kind of project, it doesn't mean it's not a smart move.

Lots of talk of big IPs here. I want a few new big IPs from Microsoft but are we under-rating the potential of bringing in a variety of smaller niche stuff with Game Pass? If we assume Game Pass will eventually be on mobile phones and laptops through streaming gaming, I'd like to see Microsoft pull together a lot of games short on content but high in quality. 2D Metroidvania, top down RPGs and episodic story based games are things that'll make sense streamed on cell phones in a few years. The big stuff will likely be played on 4K TVs but Xbox as an app really opens up the possibility of many different types of experiences beyond the blockbuster games. I'd like to see remakes of Sega and Capcoms best games along with Rare remakes of everything pre-Xbox.

If there is a kart racer and Forza is involved then we can assume:
Drivatars
Good driving physics
Vehicle Customization
Livery Editor

There is also a link between Unreal Engine and Forza's Engine. The water from Forza Horizon 3 is the water tech from Sea of Thieves. Not sure how in depth that was but it looks great running on both games.

We're rumored to be getting a Triple AAA Perfect Dark so there's that. Just make those other 2 OG Xbox games BC, which I think it's highly likely since they're Microsoft published games, and you're good.
