My right joycon periodically disconnects - really annoying when playing Dark Souls. Are there any reliable quick fixes for this?

Does this happen on Sony or Microsoft controllers? I've never had an issue with a control stick other than the N64.

I've never had a joystick or controller break on any system in 25+ years - hell all my old stuff still works - I had one single joystick (The Arcade) for all the years I had Amiga computers. Imagine if these Switch shit-sticks were actually built into the system like a Vita... the fucking nightmare that would be.

It took 6 months from brand new for my left joy-con to exhibit this apparently well documented and widespread drifting issue, what low quality garbage :(

I guess I'll send it to Nintendo for them to fix under warranty.

That's such BS. I would raise hell saying this is a well documented hardware defect.
Its so ridiculous. Look at how many people have this problem and the price they charge to fix, you might as well but a new joycon

This has been an issue that people have brought up for a long time now.

I don't know if it only applies to launch switches and joycons.

I fixed mine with extreme ease. Not a bigger hassle than opening the joycon and the little stick mechanism. Maybe my problem wasn't so critical (just a spec of dust) but I never had it again.
If nothing is fixing OP's, maybe it's not the stick itself, but rather comm problems. Maybe try the conductive foam fix?

I gave up and just sent it to Nintendo for repair. My left Joycon just kepts drifting to the left slightly and after cleaning it out repeatedly and thinking its fine for a few days until it kept coming back. Hopefully I'll get my controller back soon sent it on Monday :(

Yeah, it works. I sent mine in last year and they just simply replaced it, no questions asked. It was quick as hell on top of that.

I sent my 2 joycons at Nintendo last month. They replaced it, without telling you if it was replaced or just repaired. You could tell by touching them though, because they had a different texture than the old ones. Never had a problem of drifting since

And, they're the same color as the ones you sent in, right? Xshade90's comment seems to imply that, but just making sure.

For the record, my issue is de-syncing and delayed inputs.

Yeah, mine was blue like the original I sent them, but they do ask if you want a different color, in case they don't have your color, which I'm sure hardly actually happens.

Just started for me last week, noticed it when playing Darkside Detective, it's real bad. I was gonna buy new joycons anyways as the left one is unresponsive when not connected to the Switch but sounds like it'll just happen with a new one too.

Have the same problem in these days with the right joycon.
Brush did nothing, maybe the situation was even worse.
Pumping air under the analog did not resolve the problem.
I have resolved removing the top cap on the analog, for some reason it worked but i don't know how long it will last.

I fixed my drift when I got rid of the rubber cap on the analog stick and unjammed the little wedge thingy and blew some compressed air on the stick itself and the cap's insides.

it sucks having to put the cap back on though. You might have little lumps when you use it but mine pressed down eventually. I was out of warranty and talking to Nintendo they told me that I'm paying about 75% of a new controller's price so what the hell what do I have to lose by messing with it.

Happened to me. I tolerated it for months and called after my warranty expired. I politely persisted and they fixed it for free. I was 3 months late.

I think they will fix it for 60-80 bucks. It sucks and I got out of it but it's an option.

is this the same issue I'm experiencing with mine?

It's like a ghost is controlling the game, camera starts panning up - meaning the system registering a "down" input on the right joycon. It only stops when I touch the stick and slightly push it in any direction, but usually it goes right back to panning up after a few seconds. annoying as hell. Left Joycon starts doing the same thing sometimes...
At first I thought this was the Blutooth issue... but I'm exclusively playing in handheldmode with blutooth disabled...

Yup, you got it. Try calibrating it (in Switch settings), sometimes that helps it.

I got some WD40 and it seems to be fine. Unfortunately I have ripped the skirt off of my pink joycon, so a warning to anybody doing this to be a bit careful.

I'm going to keep using it of course and I have noted that CEX sell individual joycons, so there is an option there too.

Same thing happened to me for a few months. As it turns out, using a q-tip with some rubbing alcohol works wonders for getting any dirt out from under the left stick to stop the drifting. Hopefully it stays that way.

Ok, got the y00 screwdriver and the electronic cleaner. Followed that instructables guide to open and clean and it didn't work. Ended up ordering a replacement analog stick for $8 off amazon and now everything is fine. I recommend just spending the extra $8-$10 to replace the analog itself because opening the analog housing was a pita.

Best method I applied so far is clean the stick underneath rubber cap with a small brush + isopropyl alcohol.

Before an explanation why the stick drift, the stick mechanism is made out plastic, due friction among the pieces it wears and spread plastic particules like dust, humidity makes this particles adhere to the mechanism and this make the stick work incorrectly.

Now, we need to get rid off this dust but because it adheres to the plastic a air blower or vacuum cleaner wouldn't be enough.

What do you need:
•Small brush
•Isopropyl alcohol

Procedure:
•Gently spread isopropyl on the brush
•Move the control stick on the opposite side of the section you are cleaning
•Slightly let the brush bristles slide below the rubber cap until they reach the plastic mecanism
•Make sure to clean the whole circumference

Because isopropyl evaporate in matter of seconds there's no risk of the liquid spreading deep in the controller. Also the brush will not damage or scratch the rubber cap 👍

Hope it can be useful for someone getting drifting issue, it worked wonderful for me.

You can buy individual L or R joycons at any retailer, even online :-)
Still, there's clearly a faulty design here.
As I've said the weird thing is that this is also happening with my Hori L Joycon (the D-Pad model)

I have this problem on my left joy con now :(

I'm probably going to buy this - https://www.amazon.co.uk/WD40-Drying-Contact-Cleaner-250ml/dp/B00KPUBO2S/ - based on the comments here.

I'll report back once I've had a chance to try it out.

Fingers crossed!

I forgot to come back and post about this.

The product I linked to - NOT standard WD40 - seems to have done the trick for me. I was very careful with it the first time around and only did a small spray. It helped a bit but the problem came back after a couple of days. I did it again but used a two or three short sprays and it's been fine ever since (a good few months now).

My sister started having the same problem with her left Joycon as well, and it seems to have helped there as well - this is what reminded me to report back.

This crap is happening with my left joycon now too. Recalibrating worked for the first couple times but now it barely does anything.

Are there any good 3rd party joycons that don't have these issues?

So I've just bought an electric contacts cleaner (this one) just to be clear I don't need to open anything right?
How do I apply it then? Just move the analog sticks full left/right and spray on the rubber "ball" below the stick? Could someone tell me step by step so I don't mess up, please? 🥺

Can't send my L joycon to Nintendo anymore since it's out of guarantee and don't feel like fighting (had 2 of them repaired by Nintendo a few months ago and they are -still- fine)
BTW my HORI D-Pad Joycon has started drifting too, yay!!

The issue is the analog flap imo. Why the hell is it even there? Does it do anything good? All it does is allow dirt to get inside and fuck up the controller

3 of 4 (now 5 I guess) joy cons I've owned have had drifting issues. Likely cause I play a ton on the subway and the subway has a lot of dust floating around

I've had 3 sets of joycons and problems with all of them. 2 or them had the drift everyone's talking about. With my latest pair the analog on the left joycon just decides to act as if i'm holding it down. So menus constantly scroll and everything just goes crazy. Then just as quickly as it started it just stops. Not happy at all with the joycon quality. Meanwhile my original N64 controllers still work just fine.

The WD-40 unfortunately didn't fix it for me, and it seems to be a reception issue since the drifting gets better or worse depending how or where I hold my controller, and the joystick calibration tells me nothing is wrong.

Considering my switch is like two feet from where I play I have no idea wtf to do.

I'm also having this issue. A lot of the time when I move the stick up and then let go the input doesn't reset as quickly as it should. Looking in the calibration screen I've even seen it just hover above neutral for like a second or two after letting go. Has made playing games in handheld mode pretty difficult. Honestly, the build quality in the joycon's is disappointing in general. Both my left and right joycon's sl and sr buttons don't work anymore which means I can't use them as solo controllers and for some reason the lights on the joycon don't light up when they're turned on anymore either. All very annoying.

The approach I used is pretty clearly explained in "method 2" of this video:

It's been better for me for months now, though I expect it to come back/get worse over time.

EDIT: I did have to follow up with re-calibrating the stick as well.

I've had that issue as well, I posted about it here on my launch grey R Joycon. You can't even use it horizontally since SL and SR don't work and sync leds don't light up anymore. It's a widespread issue (although not as much as analog's drift), Nintendo is aware of it. I've had my joycon repaired for free even if it was out of warranty, all it took was mentioning and linking to a reddit thread and other websites full of people lamenting the same. Don't have it handy but it's just a Google search away.

And this is why I won't buy any console products until after several months pass, to check if issues arise. I don't have this problem (yet), but I was very annoyed when the Down D-PAD of my New 3DS ended up not working at all anymore.
I still need to try to open and clean it, but needless to say I'm a little anxious. If you have advices I'm interested.

Worst aspect of the joycons for sure they should fix this bs they cost like 80 bucks for christ sake.

Also should be fixed for free out of warrenty too btw cuz its quite widespread. Both my pairs have it and the other was bought 1 year after launch.

I'm curious how Nintendo changed the design of their analog sticks that this is suddenly a common issue after 4 generations of home consoles where this wasn't really an issue.

Just fixed mine!

I lifted the flap up with my mums mascara applyer (gotta use whatever tools I had at my disposal) and could see a strange build up of white dusty type stuff.

Works perfectly now :p

*accidentaly* gave my friend that joycon a few days back when we were playing smash haha. He might actually be able to beat me now... what have I done :O

I failed trying to quote you and edited the quote in after posting. So probably my fault you didn't get pinged.

I also had this SL/SR/LED issue, I opened up the joycon and found out that it was damage to a ribbon cable folded over by design. Rather than send it to Nintendo (I assumed it would cost me because of expired warranty) I got a replacement ribbon cable from amazon prime and replaced it myself.

Add me to the list of people disappointed in Nintendo's apparent nosedive in quality control.

Gamecube controller had some stick problems. The 3ds/new 3ds also had issues with the circle pad. The WiiU, nobody really played enough to notice. ;)

Yeah all of those are not even close to that mess that is the Joycon's production design. It feels like we're going close to, or even bigger, than the 360's rrod issues... seriously the *majority* of players I talked to, one way or the other have had issues on at least one Joycon
Crazy.
