The copy of The Good Place episode 204 I had was actually just episode 203 again, so I needed a substitute.

Anyway, the first episode shifted the story fully to the perspective of Michael, and it was pretty fun.

DC Super Hero Girls had come up on Discord recently, so that seemed the obvious choice for a quick substitute (after a few minutes of fishing for suggestions to no avail). "Frenemies" features Barbara Gordon's good friend Harleen Quinzel moving to Metropolis and shenanigans ensue. It was a pretty fun story.

Infinity Train now follows Mirror Tulip. The episodes are still good, and I even see some hints about later stuff.

Magia Record kept people around even with the subs. People noticed it wasn't quite as stylish as Madoka classic, but they still seemed to enjoy it.

The FiM episodes were alright. For the first, the group chat reminded me of how the people who tried to put episodes in a chronological order assumed Pinkie's excited talking about Rainbow at the start was her describing the Sonic Rainboom, and thus placing this episode after that. Nothing else comes to mind to mention. The second episode's chat had a lot of jokes about Rainbow being in the trash where she belongs.

The She-Ra episodes were a bit dumb, especially that bit about Bow not wanting to capture Catra because capturing is what the Horde does. So then what the hell are the heroes supposed to do? I guess it's the Batman Begins "I'm not going to kill you, but I don't have to save you" philosophy, given how the episode goes.

The Sailor Moon episodes were pretty enjoyable. The first was filler, but we got to see Rei and Usagi's argumentative relationship for the first time, and some fun dumb moments. The second episode had Jadeite get run over by a freaking plane. He's fine after, but then Queen Beryl puts him to "eternal sleep". Sailor Says videos weren't super weird this time. The first was actually the lesson of the episode! The second was about working hard in general, including exercise because much of the episode involved running from planes I guess.

Tangled has resumed, and thus should be part of the stream again. I'll replace one of the FiM airings with it, since those are reruns. The remaining never-streamed FiM episodes are all fairly solid, so I don't feel the need to pair them up with an episode people like more.

Once again, we're watching Oscar-nominated shorts in the lead up to the ceremony.

This time, we actually did watch the correct The Good Place episodes, fully establishing the new status quo of season 2, and we see how Tahani died. It was pretty good.

The Infinity Train episodes were good too. I hadn't noticed the wind creature was voiced by Wayne Knight on my first viewing.

The Magia Record had neat visuals, but the stuff with the broken friendship was pretty weak. Hopefully this isn't what the show will mainly be like.

I forgot a lot of how the FiM episode went, including Thorax's pony disguise, and even the song. It was good.

Tangled returns with a special appearance from Spike. Or rather a baby dragon. It was a fun episode.

Both of She-Ra's episodes had good comedy, with imagination sequences in the former (including callbacks to the 80s show), and Drunk Adora in the latter. They were pretty fun.

The Sailor Moon episodes were good too, with a weird tennis transformation in the former and the revelation that Tuxedo Mask transforms whenever Sailor Moon does in the latter. That was actually revealed in an episode we skipped, but it's presented more or less the same there as here. Coincidentally, both episodes involved Tuxedo Mask actually doing stuff, and Sailor Moon fighting alongside him without the other Sailor Scouts.

The second Sailor Says explains that it's good to be true to yourself, so villains can absorb more energy from you.

The Good Place's first episode was one you might have seen GIFs of, with Michael giving a live demonstration of the trolley problem. The second episode had a lot of Janet, with the introduction of Derek at the end.

I saw Kitbull before, and it's still good, though pretty obviously going for the heart by being about (1) a cat and dog getting along and (2) a dog being abused but then finding a better owner.

The Infinity Train episodes were alright, but not too remarkable compared to what's coming up.

Magic Record episode 3 featured no deaths, which disappointed everyone. The story hasn't been that interesting, so we decided to drop the show. If things pick up later, we'll double up episodes.

The replacement will probably be Shoujo Kageki Revue Starlight, which was previously requested to replace Kaleido Star.

Not too many people in this stream.

"PPOV" is a pretty underrated episode. Rarity especially is pretty fantastic here. It does get weaker once we get to Applejack's story, though.

The Tangled episode was good. Having seen this week's new episode, there are some odd things that don't match up with this one, though.

With She-Ra, it was pretty clear this wasn't actually a season finale, but Netflix splitting the season at an arbitrary point in the middle. The first was Shadow Weaver backstory, and it was alright. Second featured the stunning reveal of Bow's dads and backstory, and it was pretty fun. Notably, his dads expect him to wear normal clothes that cover his midriff and Bow wasn't meant to be a descriptive name. I also liked Adora putting odd emphasis on every word as an attempt at an accent.

The first Sailor Moon episode was a lot of fun, featuring two woman animators who are ~~lovers~~ ~~good friends~~ cousins and a villain duo that fell apart with zero effort from the heroes. Also Nephrite's cool car, which I suppose must have influenced Utena. The second episode featured what I think are our first indications of the reincarnation story with Usagi and Mamoru, and also Tuxedo Mask kissing Usagi after she falls asleep drunk in what I assume was seen as romantic in the 90s in Japan.

I couldn't find the Sailor Says for these episodes, unfortunately. The video I included is actually a preview; I didn't check it.

The Good Place featured more plot developments, and it was pretty enjoyable. I had forgotten about some stuff that happened here.

Infinity Train featured some heavy shit happening, including flagrant use of "it's fine if they aren't actually human". It was great.

Revue Starlight was pretty boring for most of it, and had a weak Sentai Filmworks dub, but then in the last minutes, things went really Utena with a magical battle. We'll keep giving it a chance.

Some people hadn't caught all the relevant previous Tangled episodes, so some explanations were needed. They seemed to like the episode regardless.

She-Ra went into more detail about the backstory with the first episode. Now that we know Hordak is a clone and the original is still out there, that opens up this Hordak for reformation. The second episode had a pretty good battle scene at the end. In general, season 3 has definitely come out of the gate swinging, compared to season 2.

Sailor Moon closed out Nephrite's story in a surprisingly violent way, despite the green blood. It was done pretty well. Given Naru's prominence, one person wondered if she would be a Sailor Guardian. I assume he thought she was Sailor Jupiter due to the brown hair, but no, we're introduced to Makoto next episode. Usagi also had some good gags here, including when she tells Naru how bad Nephrite is but completely fails to explain anything before she bails.

Still couldn't find the Sailor Says for these episodes.

The Good Place and Infinity Train episodes were good. With Infinity Train, there was a lot of great freaky imagery and an exploration of the plight of train denizens who want to leave. We also got to see that One-One isn't necessarily your friend. I did think the ending was a bit of a cop out, but there is precedence of the Train being able to influence the "real world". This led to a discussion about what the nature of reflections are in this universe.

Revue Starlight continues to have alright fight scenes, but the school parts are a real slog. I asked about it in the anime community thread, but no response.

Infinity Train will probably be swapped out for Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts.

Celestia brings startling news: she and Luna intend to retire and leave Equestria under Twilight's rule. Meanwhile, the ancient villain Grogar gathers past enemies for an ultimate plan, but the newly revived King Sombra believes he can conquer Equestria on his own.

903. Uprooted [SONG] (Student Six, Twilight Sparkle)
When the spirit of the Tree of Harmony contacts the Student Six in their dreams and they learn about the Tree's death, they try to work out the best way to memorialize it.

904. Sparkle's Seven (Mane Six, Spike, Celestia, Luna)
Shining Armor dares Twilight to break through his new security at Canterlot Castle, and with a childhood prize on the line, she turns to her friends for the heist. The story of this special 200th episode (including Best Gift Ever) came from the lead voice actors: Tara Strong, Tabitha St. Germain, Ashleigh Ball, Andrea Libman, and Cathy Weseluck.

During a buckball game (see Buckball Season), Rainbow reunites with Quibble Pants (see Stranger Than Fan Fiction) who is dating a mare but has trouble connecting with her sporty daughter. Patton Oswalt returns as Quibble Pants.

907. She's All Yak [SONG] (Yona, Rarity, Student Six, Mane Six)
The school is having a traditional pony dance, and feeling pressured to act more pony-like, Yona turns to Rarity for a makeover.

908. Frenemies [SONG]
Angered by their bickering, Grogar sends the other villains on a mission together. To their horror, this might result in them becoming friends.

Not too many people were in this stream.

This is the last remaining FiM episode we haven't streamed. It's a fine episode, with the Rockhoof story being the weak link, and the other two stories being pretty interesting. I forgot about the Mistmane fight; she doesn't exactly use her skills in later appearances. Flyders are still terrifying. I also forgot about the references to "Sleepless in Ponyville".

The Tangled episode was fun.

She-Ra had shit go down, with a betrayalthon and I suppose everyone dying in the end. It was pretty good.

With Sailor Moon, we're first introduced to Makoto / Sailor Jupiter, who is pretty badass and manages to get first blood against Zoicite, one of the Four Kings of Heaven, without her Sailor Guardian form. However, we've reached the point where Sailor Moon is the only one allowed to finish off the monster, which will end up making battles much more repetitive than they already were. Also, the music for Moon Healing Escalation isn't nearly as good as the Moon Tiara Action theme. These episodes also introduce the strongest ancient monsters... the first of whom has an arcade them, and the second is an angel boxer named Boxy. It's weird.

I wasn't a huge fan of this part of The Good Place, and the early bits of season 3, but it seemed to go over well enough in the stream.

We started Kipo, and people like the show already.

With Revue Starlight, however, this proved to be the tipping point and we dropped it. The school parts really assumed the viewers would be able to remember the relationships of all the characters, and there was a bit where a character was tied up and held in a storage room, and none of us even realized it was the main character until she escaped! It's a shame, I do like the entire stage theme with the fights, but the story around it is so boring and hard to follow.

This was a fantastically written story. The details of Sweetie's thoughts and how the other two mares acted throughout felt true to life, and the imagery was very well done. Despite the grim subject matter, things end on a hopeful note for Sweetie's recovery, which is good to see.

The War on Hearth's Warming

Sailing the northern sea in search of pirates makes for a tedious trip; meanwhile two mares shoot the breeze.

That was pretty good. It was interesting piecing together when this took place and what Tempest and Brine's relationship is. Nice detail that Tempest brought up Hearth's Warming but failed to realize that was why the pirates were celebrating. Snails' presence and the fact that the crew was Apples felt odd, though.

"Fall Weather Friends" is still a fun episode, with a lot of good gags. I keep forgetting Celestia randomly shows up at the end. This time, I noticed that Twilight saying she only got fifth place is oddly disconnected from the rest of the scene. It's a separate shot and none of the characters acknowledge her saying this. I wonder if Twilight originally did just get first place (hence the medal being gold).

Tangled was good, and had good moles.

She-Ra featured a Doctor Who Moffat season finale style story of reality falling apart and Adora having to fix it, with things falling into the vortex being forgotten by everyone. Though it was interesting, it also felt kind of arbitrary what Adora had to do. In the end, Glimmer's mom sacrifices herself, which felt a bit off when I didn't feel she and Adora had that strong a connection.

Sailor Moon's first episode was alright, though it was nice to see an Ami focus episode. The second episode, however, was a lot of fun, with some great exaggerated reactions and dumb lovestruck teens. I'm glad I didn't end up skipping this.

The first Sailor Says had an odd amount of silence. I suppose "school is good" is a statement that can stand on its own.

We only have 13 episodes of She-Ra left, and 3 of Tangled left, so the plan is to drop down to one She-Ra and add back in a FiM. Tangled will be swapped out for The Owl House, and for She-Ra, we'll figure it out later.

I was surprised to see Chuck go into the development of Equestria Girls as much as he did, including inserting behind the scenes clips. He also talks a lot about the negative reaction before it came out. As for his view,

He liked it, including the human designs, and including the big boots. The high school story is weak, but Twilight figuring out human stuff helped there a lot. The climax, with Sunset transforming, could have used some foreshadowing. Sunset's redemption was much too quick, and Starlight's was better; note he hasn't taken Rainbow Rocks into consideration.

People continued enjoying Kipo.

For Utena, we only had one other person who had watched it before, so we got a lot of "wait wut"s. It's still a fun episode.

Sonic the Hedgehog: the Movie was a big nostalgia bomb for me, and people who hadn't seen it before enjoyed it. Now, it's easy to see just how 90's it is, even down to the sound effects. Sara is a weird inclusion that sticks out even more now than back then, with her constant screaming and everyone being attracted to her. The Sonic and Metal Sonic (excuse me, Hyper Metal Sonic) fights and other action sequences are still hype, though I notice now that Metal's coloring feels different in several scenes, like he's computer generated. Voices are still bad, but you oddly get used to them quickly. I still don't know what's up with Knuckles' hat.

I decided to show the OK KO / Sonic crossover episode after, since it has a fair amount of references to the anime, and it's a lot of fun.

Boast Busters is still fun, despite its story problems. I keep forgetting how Twilight too sounded different in early season one.

The Tangled episode was fine.

The She-Ra episodes were fun, and finally featured the other princesses again. Catra really does have some intense plot armor, though.

The first Sailor Moon episode was alright, though it was nice to get some more Rei focus. The second episode had cats and rats, so it was good.

The first Sailor Says was alright, but the second told kids to spay and neuter their cats, so that's good.

I had a miss a big chunk of those The Good Place episodes, but I liked them well enough when I watched them, and people seemed to enjoy them.

The Kipo episode had cats, so it was good.

We started Harley Quinn with this stream. Much of the beginning of the episode was spent trying to prove that yes, this is R-rated, with tons of swearing and gore, to the point it was offputting. However, it calmed down and greatly improved in that regard as it went on. The episode seemed to go over well, so we'll continue this.

Not too many people this time.

The Good Place demonstrated how quickly it's willing to change its story direction. When I first watched these episodes, I thought for sure that Trevor would be a consistent threat throughout the season, but no, gone after one episode. And then there's the development at the end of the second episode. The comedy was good throughout, too.

Kipo had nice songs, some major story developments, and cats vs. rockin' snakes, making it a good episode.

The second Harley Quinn episode was much better than the first, now that it isn't so focused on hyperviolence. There were tons of good gags, and I liked how the characters were presented, including the super lame Kite Man.

Though the padding is clear this go around, the Tangled ending is still good. Seemed like people enjoyed it well enough.

The first Sailor Moon episode was pretty fun, with some silly comedy and algae throwing.

The second episode finally introduced Sailor V AKA Sailor Venus, along with Artemis. However, this required the other characters to be pretty dumb, and they come off as pretty lame. Still, as long as you just accept that, it was a fun episode.

The Good Place had a great set of episodes, including a sequence where Chidi's mind breaks and he goes around shirtless, showing off his intense philosophy professor muscles. People noted they went surprisingly expensive for some quick site gags, particularly the Florida taxi being a monster truck running over other cars. Also got Eleanor pointing out that more guys need to be bi.

This is one of the weakest Kipo episodes, I feel, due to the characters acting pretty dang dumb, but it does have rapping science wolves. Next one is much better.

Between watching episodes 2 and 3 of Harley Quinn, I watched a video review that points out many of the issues with the series, particularly regarding the lack of female characters, and it was hard not to notice that aspect coming up here. For instance, the fact that Ivy and Harley can't have a scene to themselves, and the male-coded plant has to be there too. And of course, Harley decides to make her crew all male villains. Still, this episode had some good gags.

"Owl's Well That Ends Well" is a fine episode, I feel, but definitely on the weaker end for the show. Don't think I didn't notice that some people specifically came into the stream after it ended, though.

"Inspiration Manifestation" is pretty fun. Rarity's eating noises are pretty great. Owlowiscious is used well here, and it's a shame we didn't get more of him and Spike like this.

She-Ra was fun, even if the characters acted pretty dumb in it. I'm unclear when the Flutterina swap happened.

The Owl House's first episode was pretty good, on rewatch, and people seemed to like it. Likeable characters, a well paced story, and spots with really good animation.

Sailor Moon had a pretty eventful pair of episodes, with the reveal that Sailor Moon is the Moon Princess (gasp!), Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask learning of each other's identities, the backstory of the Princess Serenity and Prince Endymion, another Heavenly King down, Sailor Venus becoming useless already, and Tuxedo Mask being captured. During the second episode, someone who hadn't watched the series wondered if these were the final episodes. I almost feel bad about the fact that I only intend to cut out one more episode from the rest of this season, since that's a lot of filler. But I can't bring myself to skip showcase episodes for the other girls, after they didn't have much to do in this story.

The Dic version of the Moon Princess reveal was streamed too, and I didn't realize they had insert songs other than in the season 1 final battle. All the added dialogue really is forced and unnecessary.

There was a problem with the second The Good Place episode, so we skipped it for today.

The episode we did watch was pretty good. It has one of my favorite dumb moments, of Chidi becoming oddly calm after Kamala makes all of his fears his own.

Kipo featured the proper introduction of the main villain, Scarlemagne, and Benson revealing he's gay in a well-handled moment. Plus dangerous flamingos and a theme park run by rats... I wonder what's up with that (thinking).

The Harley Quinn episode was pretty good, introducing King Shark and Robin (Damian). There were a lot of fun concepts, and not too much gross stuff.

I wasn't quite going for it, but the MLP episodes ended up having a Covid-19 theme. First has the ponies going into quarantine, second has Cadance's normal hairdresser out sick and the pony Olympics in danger of not happening.

The first episode is still fun.

The second one is fine, though it depends on characters being really dumb, I don't get why Chickadee wrecked the training course, and the ending is contrived. That dance routine is still really nice, though.

She-Ra revealed that Glimmer has leveled past She-Ra, even beating up Catra, and Adora isn't happy about that. Double Trouble was a lot of fun here.

The Owl House episode was pretty well received, and people were surprised by what a Disney show was getting away with.

The Sailor Moon episodes were pretty fun, both pretty heavy on gags. For some reason Usagi actually being good at throwing frisbees now really got me.

Well, we watched Playmobil the Movie in the new Tuesday stream. It isn't a terrible movie, but certainly not one I'd have paid money to watch. Right off the bat, we get a live action musical number, followed by DEAD PARENTS, then timeskip. Then wacky adventure.

Animation-wise, it isn't bad. I like Carla and Maximus's expressions. However, it isn't that good either. It's very basic. The voice direction is good, but the dialogue and songs are weak. The story is bland. The only reasonably interesting part is the spy movie parody with Rex Dasher, which of course is what was shown in all the trailers.

The stream itself was surprisingly packed. There was a fair amount to riff on, keeping it fun, though it wasn't super riffable.

Looking at upcoming movies for this stream, it seems to be the mediocre CGI films stream.

Not nearly as many people in this stream.

This was a good set of The Good Place episodes, including a clip show mostly made up of new scenes and Janet kicking ass. We also get the next big twist, with the reveal that there's a problem with the afterlife point system.

Kipo featured a very creepy antagonist and some fun dream sequences. Amazing how anime Wolf's dreams are when she presumably has never seen anime.

Harley Quinn was another good episode, aside from the unfortunate Jewish stereotypes.

Both FiM episodes were fun. It's still striking how odd Twilight's voice is in "Winter Wrap Up". In "Tanks for the Memories", I forgot the entire bit with Fluttershy making Rainbow cry.

The She-Ra episode was alright. It was a bottle episode, but I didn't think it was too interesting. Glitched Light Hope was fun. Those ember spore things were really inconsistent with how much damage they do.

The Owl House episode was alright too. It's interesting going back to this episode with how it gets reframed later, especially with how Amity doesn't even interact with Luz much here. Regardless, this marked the start of Luz and Amity shipping, I assume due to Akko and Diana shippers moving right on into it.

The Sailor Moon episodes were fun, though seriously the Sailor Guardians are really dumb here. A skiing contest where the winner is named Moon Princess? Trap from the Dark Kingdom. Skating lessons that are free for groups of five? Trap from the Dark Kingdom. It was also notable how they tried so hard to give Minako a comedic gimmick with her being mistaken about common sayings, with her being a late addition.

The Sailor Says was standard barely connected to the episode stuff.

Stream followup, we watched Trolls (about those Troll dolls). I actually watched a home copy around when this came out, and I charitably thought it was fairly good for the first half but bad for the second. Watching again, I can safely say it's only like a 10 minute stretch of the movie that's any good, when they're traveling through the forest. The art design of the movie actually is quite good, especially in the forest, with tons of great looking creatures with a yarn-like quality. However, the entire second half of the movie takes place in the deliberately ugly Gergen Town and drops the adventure story for a sort of Cinderella story. The beginning is filled with fart jokes, though that drops off. However, most of the jokes remain pretty dumb.

Overall, the good parts are the forest segment art design, the songs (though as a jukebox musical, they're mostly songs people already knew were good), and particularly the song sequence for the forest travel sequence. The bad parts are everything else. The frustrating thing about the movie is that you can see a good movie there, but it just doesn't do it.

The Good Place episodes were good, with some impressive work from Janet's actress as she portrays every other main non-Michael character. We also get the next big twist of the series and a look at the real Good Place.

Kipo had some cute raccoon people, Dave almost being helpful, and a generally fun story. This episode is written by Lewis and Songco, who have worked on FiM, BTW. (They're also the series' story editors).

Harley Quinn's episode was on the weak end.

I had something else to do during the last hour of shows, so I shuffled things around. People were slow to join at first, but they came along as it went on.

She-Ra was alright, but the actual lead characters really do just feel like idiots and don't feel too likable right now. At least Scorpia realizes Catra is a jerk now.

The Owl House was a good episode, setting up a lot of things for the future, and it was a solid story on its own.

The first Sailor Moon episode had a good showing for Ami, not so much for Makoto. Second episode focused on Minako, with Usagi coming off as more bratty than usual. I was hoping for the episode to cover Sailor V's origin story, but it didn't. I have to say it's a bit odd that she spent a fair amount of time in London as Sailor V before returning to Tokyo when she's still in middle school. Both episodes were fun. Only four episodes left in the season.

For the MLP episodes, I had to drop out, but seems like people enjoyed them.

We've reached the end of The Good Place season 3, and this set of episodes is pretty fun. Among other things, Chidi sees the Time-Knife! And also things go full circle with the characters having to run their own neighborhood.

Kipo was also a good episode, with some great action sequences, a sad flashback, and an enemy becoming a friend.

Harley Quinn was the most gruesome episode in a while, but it was fun. It was kind of weird that they made Queen of Fables the character that crosses the line for Harley and the others. Not so much that a character crosses the line, but that they used what could have been a fun part of the crew. Also Ivy dating Kite-Man is not a direction I like; it's even presented as inexplicable in-show.

Act II Chapter 20

Great chapter! I love the thematic meaning behind the teddy bears being the best defense against Nightmare Moon, and of course, Nightmare Moon being unable to attack Pinkie. Compared to the previous version of this chapter you shared on Patreon, it's definitely much more clear that Pinkie's in denial. Poor ponk.

Also poor Ink. That nightmare really says a lot about her insecurities.

The sequence in the Dreamland was great, and very evocative of Silent Hill. Speaking of which,

"Much like the floor below, frightening drawings plastered the walls of the Dreamland's second floor—several of them were the same as downstairs, in fact, including the one with the timberwolves."

Fruits Basket is back, and to celebrate this show about people turning into animals, I streamed a FiM episode about animals turning into trees. It's still the best of the Pillar backstory episodes, an interesting look at Fluttershy, and possibly the most horrifying FiM episode.

Fruits Basket itself was a fairly unremarkable episode, focusing on the Yuki fanclub and some new characters, but still nice to see it back.

The She-Ra episode was pretty fun, with lots of mystery parodies, and hey, they finally figured out the spy thing! Same it was after it would have been helpful, but still.

The Owl House was a good and pretty story significant episode, featuring sakuga and an actual justification for Luz x Amity (after people started shipping it).

The first Sailor Moon episode was something I mixed up in my mind with an episode we skipped, that involved a monster that wasn't actually a monster. I think I only saw the beginning of this episode back then. In any case, it was fun, though the fake fighting didn't amount to anything.

With the last episode, we enter the final stages of the season. I'll be honest, Sailor Moon arc resolutions tend to be pretty bad, especially with how the other Sailor Guardians are useless, and you can see this here.

Trolls: World Tour

Copying my Western Animation thread post, I liked it way more than the first. Visual design was fantastic, they didn't have half the movie take place in an intentionally ugly area with ugly characters. Characters also felt less obnoxious this time, or at least we saw less of the obnoxious characters from the first and the new trolls weren't particularly obnoxious. There are also a lot of similarities to MLP the Movie and Rainbow Rocks, lol.

I'm kind of surprised to see people elsewhere say the first movie was a lot better. I wouldn't go out of my way to watch this again, but I wouldn't mind it.

Going into the stream reaction, it was definitely way more positive than it was for the first, largely praising the art design. There was some grumbling about what the main music genres were and how they were grouped, but the movie somewhat commenting on that seemed to appease them. People weren't huge fans of the ending, though.

We'll be dropping the troll theme for the stream at this point. One possibility for next time is We're Back: A Dinosaur Story.

We checked out Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, which was pretty fun, with lots of awkward humor and extravagant musical numbers, though the characters haven't clicked for some people yet. I think we'll check back in after we finish The Good Place.

We finished off Kipo season one, which saw some good giant dogs, meeting up with Kipo's dad, a trippy power up sequence, and the other humans being captured. I do think it's weird how they set up Wolf going after Kipo, only for Kipo to immediately escape, but otherwise it's a good episode that sets up things for the future.

Harley Quinn had her actually get into the Legion of Doom, which I didn't expect, especially at this point. Of course, this won't lead to happiness for her, with a rift between her and Ivy. It was a pretty good episode.

Only two other people were around for the FiM episode (one not in a state to comment). It's an enjoyable episode, though I feel like the best parts of the episode are at the beginning with Fluttershy.

Fruits Basket had more friendship and bad parents, with some added being worried about the future and jobs. It was good.

She-Ra was pretty fun, with sea shanties and the guys having to be rescued when their fake kidnappers turn out to be real kidnappers. It is kind of weird how little one kingdom being conquered seems to matter, any more than any random defeat.

The Owl House was good, with children's card games and walking houses. I remembered being a bit down on this when I watched it the first time, but I liked it more this time.

And then we finished Sailor Moon's first series. As promised, the first episode featured the Sailor Guardians dying. We've had Usagi purifying monsters for ages, so it's neat seeing monsters get freaking killed again. The Sailor Guardians all had good sendoffs, both in terms of them defeating their foes and with the others mourning them. Including that Usagi face.

The final episode features more death, a classic final battle, and everyone dying and being reborn. It seemed like everyone was pretty satisfied by it. Of course, then I showed the Dic version of the final battle, which through a lot of people for a loop, especially Queen Beryl being "blasted back to the Negaverse". In the chat, we talked more about the original manga version, the Dic dub, and the aborted Saban version.

Next Sunday we'll be watching Your Lie in April in Sailor Moon's slot, but the week after we'll be jumping to Sailor Moon R episode 60 (the episode number doesn't reset to 1), skipping over the Makai Tree arc.

1. We're Back: A Dinosaur's Story

I liked this as a kid, but it's definitely a messy movie as an adult. The story is disjointed, which makes sense after reading that the original children's book basically ended after the parade sequence. That said, the animation is good and there are definitely memorable sequences, including the song and Screweye being freaking eaten by crows at the end out of nowhere.

It was a really short movie, so I should have included something else with it.

The Good Place season 4 started with more character introductions, including a mediocre white man who thinks he's the best, and the had a lot of good gags, including moments that in retrospect are hinting at future moments.

Glitch Techs seemed to go over pretty well. The video game stuff does feel dated, but not as much as you'd expect from a network cartoon. The lead characters are pretty fun. For an episodic show, there is an odd amount of set up, though.

There was clearly supposed to be a bad horse in each house, but they screwed up with Diamond Tiara, since she's reformed. Most people are going with House #4 as a result, but people have argued for others. #3 could have some fun conversations, #2 has Ogres and Oubliettes, #5 is for people who are into mean girls, and in #6 Granny Smith will die soon so that means more room and you only have to deal with Snips. No one has argued for #1.

"The Mane Attraction" is still great, though definitely more focused on the songs than the story.

The Fruits Basket episode was good, with some nice voice work, fun gags, and dealing with bad family.

She-Ra had some big revelations, including Mara and Light Hope's true nature, and how Madam Razz views the world; maybe also jumping through time? It was good.

The Owl House introduced Amity's siblings and validated the Luz x Amity shippers that had already mobilized with previous episodes. Even outside of that, it was a good and inventive episode.

I played the new scenes of "A-Dressing Memories" between episodes. Don't think that quite worked; I'll just play them together next time.

We started Your Lie in April, and it seemed to go pretty well, so we'll continue streaming it. Assuming no change in opinion, it'll be doubled up until we run out of The Owl House episodes (there are three left, pending Disney airing more), and then I'll put it in The Owl House's slot and bring back Sailor Moon in the last hour. Compared to similar shows we streamed before, the humor feels better and the characters feel more likable.

Next time, we're streaming The Secret of Nihm... so that the week after, we can stream Timmy to the Rescue.

Going over PonyFest Online 2, I'll talk about the panels I watched. I point out the panels Monochromatic participated in since I'm in her Discord server and thus watched them for support.

10 AM - History of MLP
This ended up being one woman talking mainly about the toy lines. Still, it was nice seeing someone excited about this aspect of the franchise.

12:30 PM - I Ship It!
Only watched the first half hour of this, but it was a fun conversation. Showcased ships were:
1. Twilight and Comet Tail (background pony she stood next to once)
2. OctaviaScratch
3. Cakes
4. Smolder x Ocellus
5. LyraBon
6. CheesePie
7. DiscoShy
8. DiscoJack, as a crack ship
9. SombraPie (same)
10. Just picking up toys

This was to showcase different kinds of ships.

1 PM - Favorite Fanfictions
This was first of three panels that Monochromatic participated in. Things started off on an awkward note when one guy went, "So, My Little Dashie is great, mirite!" and a couple people went, "Eh, not really." Then he backpedaled and said, "Well, whatever you think of it, we can all agree My Little Dashie caused an emotional response."

After that, it went into a pretty good conversation about fic recommendations, covering different genres. I could feel my eyes glazing over a bit during the Humans in Equestria section, though. No matter what, that genre feels like white cis men interrogating their interest in MLP.

2:30 PM - A Moment with Lena Hall
Only watched a bit of this due to a food coma, but Lena Hall was a pretty fun interviewee.

3:30 PM - Why Ponyfic Matters
Only watched a bit, dropping out once I saw it was just two guys, discussing fanfiction in a pretty dry way.

5:30 PM - Head to Headcanon
This was the second panel that Mono participated in. The premise is that in response to audience questions ("What happened to Applejack's parents?") the panelists come up with answers and the audience votes which one's the best. Of the panels I watched, this is definitely the one that suffered most from being on Zoom rather than being in front of an audience. I could tell this was meant to rely heavily on audience cheers and such, but instead they had to rely on a bad polling system, Discord emotes, that allowed people to spam whatever emotes they wanted. This led to the moderation bot freaking out and preventing people from posting for 2 hours, until the bot got turned off.

There being eight or so panelists meant that it was hard for a rapport to build among them, and often people were left unable to get a word in for minutes at a time. There were some fun answers, but then came the question about what the other zebras besides Zecora are like and, well, the panel exposed just how white they were then. The first answer a panelist gave was a woman excitedly talking about a fic she wrote where her OC was sold into slavery to the zebras in Zebrafrica; so the other zebras are reverse slavers. That resulted in a pretty notable awkward silence. They chose to move on rather than address that. The other suggestions were better, but still definitely from a white perspective. Someone joked, "You're racist for saying it's racist," at one point, to show how white it was. Mono was completely silent during this, thankfully. I dropped out shortly after the next question.

I propose zebra questions be banned from panels like this.

6:30 PM - Note Wise
NoteWise is a PonyEra person, so of course I had to listen. He did well.

6:30 PM (7 PM) - Pony Feud ft. VIPs
I watched this while listening to the above. It was interesting to see show people struggle with show related questions, but it lost its appeal pretty quickly for me. Plus they messed up the Family Feud formula by having the questions be fact-based rather than opinion-based.

7:30 PM - Pony Break: Speedwritten Scriptwriting
This was Mono's last panel, and with just three people bouncing ideas off each other, it was a ton of fun. They managed to come up with an actually pretty workable concept for a second G4 movie, based on the prompts and celebrity guest stars.

Terry Crews plays the villainous centaur king, who years ago attempted to make the perfect cupcake only for Pinkie Pie to suddenly appear and ruin it. In the present, his daughter, played by Awkwafina, leads the assault force on Canterlot after discovering Pinkie Pie is there. The ponies go to visit Scorpan, who is actually a woman played by Lady Gaga. With a song, she sends them back in time, and they learn the one who ruined the perfect cupcake is actually Awkwafina's character as a child wearing a wig. They attempt to stop her, only for Present Awkwafina to interfere. She was tired of her father leading the centaurs into being peaceful bakers and wanted to be a warrior. She becomes the true antagonist.

In the present, the big battle approaches, but Pinkie teams up with King Terry Crews to make the perfect cupcake and stop all this. Terry Crews presents it to Awkwafina... and throws it in her face. This triggers memories of her childhood when they had fun playing in the kitchen while he baked. In the end, the perfect cupcake only has to be perfect for the person receiving it, and this is enough to mend the broken family. Then Lady Gaga Scorpan returns for the ending musical number.

There are a lot of other details they figure out. This is definitely a panel I recommend checking out once it's on YouTube.

1. The Secret of NIMH

It's a very pretty film with several memorable moments, but the pacing is pretty messy. A lot of time is spent before we even learn about the rats of NIMH, and the entire NIMH aspect has surprisingly little play in the story. I was surprised to see this is actually true in the source book too, and it's a pretty accurate adaptation, minus the added magic aspects. Speaking of which, the magic gem got no explanation at all.

Mrs. Brisby is a good character; it's nice to have a protagonist who's just a mother trying to do her best, and she doesn't become a big action hero. It is lame how everyone addresses her as Mrs. Jonathan Brisby, though. Surely she has her own given name.

One big issue with the entire premise is that there already being talking animals makes it harder to tell what's so special about the NIHM animals. I noticed from Wikipedia that the same complaint exists for the original book. I was also surprised to see there were only three NIHM books, only one by the original author (the others by his daughter). I thought for sure this would have had a ton of books like Redwall.

Next time, we learn more about the real hero of the story, Timmy!

The first Good Place episode was a bit rough with Chidi tormenting, though that turned out to be the point of the story. Besides that, there were lots of good gags and a nice twist, that I was able to see more in the episode knowing it was coming.

Glitch Techs had some odd sound mixing, with the music drowning out the dialogue, but it was fun and had some great action animation.

Harley Quinn featured her regressing as the Joker treated her better, but he showed his true colors. Still, now we have the part where her friends abandon her. It was a good episode.

With us out of songs, it's time to finally start showing these stop motion shorts. Skipped ones that didn't focus on Pinkie, since this is kind of a Pinkie themed stream. The shorts are still cute, especially those "ooee" sounds.

We watched a full recap episode for the first time, and I think it went well.

She-Ra featured the classic pre-finale breakup, between Adora and Glimmer. Glimmer really shouldn't have taken the title "queen", as it's making the music sound evil around her. Also, castle security continues to be terrible.

The Owl House was a fun episode. First time watching, I wasn't a fan of how Lilith was handled, but it wasn't a big deal this time around. Still a shame they swapped voices with the bodies.

Sailor Moon R featured the introduction of Chibiusa... and her gun! It was a fun episode, though it takes a while for her to be portrayed in a sympathetic way. Due to the episodes we skipped, some were surprised by the new transformation items and Usagi and Mamoru being lovey dovey.

Alright, so a couple notes about Sailor Moon. First, openly spoiling this because it's considered common knowledge: the girl introduced in this episode, Chibiusa (as she becomes known), is Usagi and Mamoru's daughter from the future. This did happen after Trunks was introduced in DBZ, but the concept of a teenage girl's future child coming back in time and her having to take care of them was an existing concept in shojo series.

Chibiusa's name in the Dic dub was Rini. I don't think they said her real name is Serena (Usagi's name is Serena there) but you can see how Rini would be derived from Serena.

Chibiusa doesn't realize Usagi and Mamoru in the present are her parents... for reasons. As far as she's concerned, Usagi's just some girl that shares her name.

Also, as we saw in the next episode preview, Mamoru and Usagi will be breaking up in the next episode. This doesn't happen in the manga, and was done because series director Ikuhara really didn't like them as a couple. Needless to say, the manga creator wasn't a fan of this. And given Ikuhara's preference for lesbians (see Utena), it's easy to figure out why he didn't like this pair.

Your Lie in April is still well received, it seems. There was a pretty good performance sequence, with the lead character's nerves being presented in an interesting manner.

I was requested to show episode 5 by itself and then 6-7 together, so that'll happen.

1. Scrubs - 507 - My Way Home
2. The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue

The Scrubs episode was pretty good, outside of one pretty outdated moment where Rudy Giuliani is presented in a positive way. Also had a pretty good rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".

And then we reached the main event, with Timmy to the Rescue. It was pretty striking going from the first movie animation in the intro to the generic new animation. Most of the movie is generic and dull... but then we get the big twist with Martin somehow turning into Eric Idle. Still, not a great movie.

The Good Place was good. The first is a bit odd in how it relies on aspects of the Bad Place that weren't really established early on, like them legitimately thinking they play a role in supporting the morality of the system, and people suits being a new innovation. The second episode was frustrating in how they bent over backwards to accommodate the mediocre rich white guy, but he gets punched and it's fine.

Glitch Techs was really good, I thought. The action animation was impressive, and it had a nice flightless bird. Sound balance was also way better than last time.

Harley Quinn went into the Quinzels, with more of a dramatic episode than usual. I had heard complaints about this episode in particular, with the serious moments getting immediately undermined by jokes, and I could definitely see that. Still, I felt it was a solid episode.

My review

This story does a great job capturing the mental health issues many have had with this pandemic. I admit I was expecting more exploration of Sunset's condition from the synopsis, but I'm quite satisfied by this exploration of her handling her quarantine. You know, this story actually did make me realize a key difference between her and Twilight: while Twilight is introverted, Sunset is extroverted. That makes it so that her being away from her friends, unable to see them in person, hurts especially hard.

At first I assumed Sunset was addressing Twilight, then perhaps some unknown third party, but only toward the end did I realize she was talking to herself.

With 3x She-Ra, I opted not to show an MLP recap episode, and that gave an opportunity to show Rarity-themed videos.

We started with Your Lie in April, which featured some of the first justifications for the title, with performances being lies, and it was good. Not a particularly eventful episode, but I assume more happens in 6-7 given the request to show them together.

I attempted to show She-Ra, but it turned out to be a Polish version of the episode or something. It took a bit to fix that, so I showed The Owl House during that.

The Owl House episode was good. I love how the show is allowed to make the monsters and obstacles so creepy. Here's my post from the Owl House OT showing all the pictures from the ending credits.

She-Ra played fine after that, thankfully. The three episodes were pretty good, and it was nice seeing Double Trouble play both sides. At first Beast Island didn't seem that special, but then we got Neverending Story style despair leading to being swallowed up, and I got it. We also got Glimmer's dad; I guess they decided not to look for him because the door closed.

And now we're officially caught up on She-Ra, until Friday at least.

Then we finished off the stream with Sailor Moon R, where Mamoru broke up with Usagi for... reasons. The drama of the break up was good, but the reason was just... nothing. Besides that, episode was good.

1. Cats Don't Dance

The movie was a pretty big hit in the stream. Animation is great (including work from Lauren Faust), the musical numbers are fun, and Darla is a fantastic antagonist. I added a bunch of Cozy Glow emotes in preparation for her. Most people just hadn't seen it in years, but we had someone who had never seen it.

I will say, it is weird that this is a story about racism, yet there are no non-white humans. Unless you count the butler.

We started late, but we got more people in the stream than usual. However, I had a bunch of Internet problems. This wasn't a problem with The Good Place, since I had already seen all of it, but I did miss a lot of Glitch Techs. It recovered by Harley Quinn.

The Good Place ended this stage of the story with things not going well for humanity (and the universe) but then we got Disco Janet! They were good episodes.

Glitch Techs (which I watched after) was a good episode. The bird's still here, for one thing.

Harley Quinn was good too. We had one person who hadn't seen it before, and he decided he needed to watch the rest.

And we've started She-Ra season 5. It's a pretty good start, with some good comedy and character moments.

We've caught up with The Owl House, outside of one episode aired outside the US which I'll save for when it airs normally. This episode does a lot to develop the story, furthering one mystery (Eda's curse) and adding another.

Your Lie in April focused on love triangles and introduced some rivals, plus some metaphors with a cat. The episodes were alright.

Covering Sailor Moon last, it turns out Ami doesn't in fact leave! And she gets a new attack that's an actual attack! It was a fun episode outside of the contrivance of none of the Sailor Guardians being able to fight the monster without Ami. Rei didn't even try a fire attack!

The streamed Sailor Moon episode reminded me of an old fanfic I read years ago, and I was shocked to see it has a TV Tropes entry.

It was a real blast from the past. The premise was that like in the episode, Ami is leaving the Sailor Guardians to go to another country. However, they are able to find a replacement Guardian: Daria. As in MTV's Daria. Spun off from Beavis and Butthead. Who incidentally appear in the fic as antagonists. And have a bizarrely long fight against the Sailor Guardians.

Oh damn, I remembered this fic involved Islamic terrorists trying to crash a plane into the Lawndale High stadium, but I didn't realize this was published before 9/11, in 1998.

Stream followup, we watched
1. Scoob!

The movie started out well enough, with the childhood segment, but then it just went off the rails.

Really, I think more than everything else, what made the movie feel off is how no one acted or sounded like they should, besides Scooby and Muttley. Hanna Barbara characters have particular voices and mannerisms, and having celebrities use more or less their normal speaking voices just doesn't cut it. With characters like Dynomutt, they didn't even try to capture their original personalities, and it was a massive mistake to split up Dick Dastardly and Muttley for so long.

Then we get to the ridiculous and inconsistent story that was obviously made by committee. We start with a Scooby Doo origin, with a lot of focus on the Mystery Gang, only for freaking Simon Cowell to show up and split up the group. Then Scooby and Shaggy team up with the Blue Falcon and the rest of the gang is just doing nothing important. Then it becomes a save the world story, where Dick Dastardly has robots that act like Minions to sell toys I assume. Scooby and Shaggy get into a fight for dumb reasons then make up, and it looks like Shaggy fake-dies but he's saved at the end.

Basically, it's "...why?" the movie.

Act II Chapter 22

Fantastic chapter! Rarity and Twilight's relationship problem was resolved (and not resolved) perfectly, acknowledging that asking for both of them to be fixed is just unrealistic. Instead, they have a better understanding of what each other's problems are and how to support them.

I wondered how the Nightmare Moon encounter would play out, but you made it a ton of fun, with a healthy dose of Confident Twilight. Then, of course, we got the feels.

It's unreal to see Luna free at last. Glad to see everyone so happy. Definitely a worthy end to this arc.

YouTube videos were all Fluttershy themed this time.

There weren't many people in the stream at first, probably meaning not too much interest in the recap episodes, but more joined as it went on.

She-Ra had pretty decent episodes, with Glimmer and Catra getting along and the latter starting her face turn in the first, and the heroes meeting some nice new characters in the latter.

Sailor Moon's episode was pretty fun. The other Sailor Guardians didn't play a major role in this, but I thought their scene commenting on Usagi and Mamoru was the highlight of the episode. Oh, and I forgot to mention before, but I skipped episode 63, since that's about Rei's grandpa, and no one cares about him.

Your Lie in April featured some fantastically animated performance sequences and some elementary school rivalries. The episodes were good.

1. An Extremely Goofy Movie

The Goofy shorts were pretty fun, though the first two were trimmed down significantly by Disney, it turned out. The third was its intended length, so it was good.

The last and first time I watched An Extremely Goofy Movie was as a rental to show during my 10th birthday party. The other people in the party seemed to like it, but I wasn't a big fan back then.

Watching it now, it has a lot of individually good moments, but it doesn't come together in a clean way. It's also very very much of its time (2000), with the X Games, skateboarding, ska music, and even the return of disco.

The animation is overall much weaker than A Goofy Movie, of course, but there are some moments that look quite good. One particular focus the animators seemed to have is the female characters, for... certain reasons.

There are some legit emotional moments with Goofy's empty nest syndrome, but there isn't room for much else characterization. PJ in particular is practically nonexistent after a certain point. Oddly, the beret girl never gets a name, and is just called Beret Girl. The librarian, Sylvia, does get a fair amount of characterization, at least.

As for the story, it's a mess, like I said, tying together barely related subplots. Goofy doesn't even join Max at the college until 20 minutes in. I think it would have been much more solid if they cut out the X Games stuff and expanded the rest, but I assume that was a big reason why this was created in the first place.
