Wat I'm most excited about is using the 10+ TF at 1080p. Should hopefully mean 60fps more often than not. The performance of last guardian, and bloodborne to a lesser extent, hampered my enjoyment. Tlg because its framerate literally tanks to low double digits and bloodborne because of microstutterng.

I don't care about 4k. 1080p is already crispy clear. Would rather put the extra horsepower to fps

Native 1440p will hopefully be the sweet spot for next gen in terms of performance with a crisp picture.

I'm wondering this myself. How's next-gen gonna handle 1080? Will games perform better if plugged into a 1080p display? Or will it just render 4k and downsample?

I agree with you OP. Do we think UI elements can run at 120+ hz? Possibly some games as well?

this gens Jaguar CPUs pushing "4K" is some of the most laughable shit I have seen. I think this gen we are in for a real treat

For the ps3 I played on 480p TV and dark souls text was unreadable also edges were cut off I don't think same thing would happen for modern TVs right?

I would rather have 4K/30 than 1080/60. That's for sure. Hopefully it can be 4K/60 in many cases though.

Pretty sure I won't be getting a 4K TV anytime soon, so hopefully they make some optimizations for 1080p.

1080P will no doubt be supported, but I think it will most likely be a case of downsampling and nothing more. I don't expect to see any 1080P peformance modes at all, especially with the perception that these will be 4K consoles.

Frame rate and resolution are both great but imagine if one of Sony or Microsoft's studios made a game specifically targeting 1080p/30fps for the XSX or PS5. Guessing it would be very close to photorealism due to all of the leftover power that devs can pour into lighting, environments, textures and raw fidelity. It'll never happen but I think it would be cool if one game did that.

I'd love this tbh. Just max out the graphics, tech, scope and ambition by sticking to 1080p or 1440p checkerboard at 30fps locked. Such a game by a competent studio would likely blow people away.

I'm planning on getting either a 1440p 120Hz monitor or a 4K 60 monitor depending on how the consoles perform in general. I'm ready to leave 1080p behind.

I think both companies should push 1st and 3rd parties to not only support multiple resolutions, but at variable graphical fidelity.

An Xbox Series X or a PS5 running a next-gen game with Ray tracing or 120hz sounds like an awesome approach for 1080p users, and since that's such a big part of the market, I would be very surprised of some studios don't still support it.

On the other hand, the systems are possibly powerful enough to do 1440p 30fps w/ray tracing, and with image reconstruction, that could still hit 4k and probably look absolutely stunning.

I don't have 4K TV, but 4K is a standard these days and it's not strange that lots of people want that resolution.
But I wish developers make some options to play 1080p/60fps or at least 1080p/30fps/ultra graphics on consoles too. It's not that hard to make those options in single player games (online is another thing). Just like PC games with thousands of options, they can give 2,3 options to console gamers too.
Can't wait for the generation after next gen! Next gen games will use lots of power of consoles to run 4K, but the 2027 generation consoles will have much more power and will use it for 4K too, so we'll see super ultra unbelievable graphics! Because I really doubt we'll see 8K console games even in 2027 and 4K will still be standard those days too.

Hoping they'll let us use 1440p monitors. Because I don't really use my 32" TV anymore other than to play games and occasional news and 1080p is enough for that size. I don't see myself getting a 4k TV anytime soon

1080p will be supersampled from 4K. I don't think devs will put any work on dedicated 1080p modes.

1440p/144hz is my sweet spot.
Easier target to reach both native res and 144hz. And when you have more gpu power available, you can downsample from 4k, heck, even 5k for perfect IQ.

For the first few years I will definitely playing next gen games on my 1080p monitor, so I hope these consoles have good support for it!

Any resolution is fine by me, as long as we can get the high framerate option.
But my favorite base resolution is 1440p so I hope next gen can stay around there for most games if they can't hit 4K.

I'd prefer 1440 60 as a baseline, anything above that I can't really tell a difference on my 4k set from my sitting distance anyhow unless it's shit like BBC nature docs that emphasize high contrast photography to bring out details otherwise missed. Most games I miss those extra details as well unless it's standing still or in a photo mode. I too would love to see a hypothetical 1080p game on PS5/XSX hardware to see what sort of insane scene complexity could be achieved.

The all 60fps dream has never happened on consoles and never will, get a pc if you want higher locked framerates.

Did you forget the Pro/X exists? There's plenty of AAA games that received a "performance mode" for these systems, many of which run at lower res + 60 fps. I fully expect to see a continuation of this on the new boxes. Also MS has specifically discussed 120hz as being supported for certain titles on XSX.

If I'm going to play games at 4k I need to get 60 fps at least. Don't have a 4k monitor and my 1070 ti isn't meant for 4k 60fps either, so it'll be an expensive upgrade for me. I'll just wait for lower prices.

Target 60FPS at all costs.

I don't care about the resolutions as long as the IQ and AA implementation is good.

I'm playing Doom Eternal in 1080p and it looks crystal clear.

I never cared about anything above 1080 and won't buy a new TV/monitor in the next few years. Give me 1080/60 mode for all next gen games.

I'd rather have 4k30 than 1080p120, but performace/fidelity options should be mandatory if anything next gen.

I've been doing this on PC on my plasma for ages now, just put it at 1080p/60fps and max the shit out of everything else.

But why? 4K has been the standard for televisions for several years now. You can easily get one for less than $300. It's hard to find a 1080p tv. So why do you think "the vast majority" will be playing at 1080p?

What percentage of society do you think have bought a new TV in the last five years? Now subtract from that percentage the amount of people who put that new TV in a room other than the one that their consoles are based in.

That's why.

Ill be sticking with 1080p TV throughout next gen unless it dies. Any resolution differences between the 2 platforms is gonna mean nothing to me. Hopefully they'll be a 1080p mode in most games but id be fine with just the downsampling.
