They don't need to but they also don't seem to do this kind of stuff. I can't think of a single instance where they took an IP created by an external company and gave it to a different company. They seem to prefer to work with an IP's original creators so there's probably not much incentive or interest to bring it back when the brains behind it are scattered to the four winds.

Not that the sanity effects really need "Eternal Darkness the IP" to work.
Someone would have to come along and convince Nintendo it's a good idea. Kind of like Next Level Games did with Punch Out or Luigi's Mansion. Sakurai with Kid Icarus.

I know those games were internally made first, but the point still stands. DKC was made by Rare and Retro showed Nintendo they could do it.

I replayed all the 3D Marios when Odyssey came out and I stand by my notion that Sunshine is by far the worst one.
Oh, it definitely is. I may find 3D Land boring compared to the competition, but I wouldn't be able to describe it as 'frustrating' and 'monotonous' in parts like I can with Sunshine.

That's why we do need a remaster/remake of Sunshine eventually. It's the 3D Mario game in need of the most fixing.

I just remembered, Yokai Watch 4 is bound to be shown off in the next Direct for localization. Maybe a release in the first half of next year?

It's been to long for me to make a comment on the gameplay but I'll maintain that Sunshine had my favorite setting till Odyssey.

I mean, for all their IP that had the original game developed by an external partner, how many of them are in the situation Eternal Darkness/Silicon Knights is in? Most of the companies that developed these games are still around.

At the very least they seem to acknowledge that the game exists by putting Alex Roivas front end center in the debut of the Spirits feature in Smash Ultimate. If they were gonna make a horror game with somewhat similar mechanics or ideas then they would use that IP, not make a new one.

Super Mario Sunshine HD would be the perfect December release, IMO. It wouldn't take that long to develop, so it could release this year (if it's a thing of course), it wouldn't take the spotlight off of any of the other Holiday titles, and a summer-themed game would be perfect game would the long winter (dream of sunshine).

That being said, X to doubt.

Sunshine needs a remake.

Not happening, we tend to get those years later. Probably a 2021 release :P

The next L5 game we're getting is most likely Snack World.

If that tweet meant anything, it's likely Super Mario Summer Odyssey. Super Mario Odyssey sequel featuring Summer vacation themed kingdoms, including Isle Delfino from the Sunshine Kingdom, launching July 2020.

Sure, it can be frustrating, but it atleast looks beautiful and has a ton of unique charm

Which cant be said for 64, the most by the books possible 3D translation which also aged like milk in the sun both graphically and mechanically. There's a reason they didnt bring Mario's punches back.

Nintendo would probably be like "hey, how about you take this interesting proposal and make this game with your own world and characters instead?" :p

Well they haven't made a new Doshin, Cubivore, Odama, Geist or Battalion Wars game either...

A game being poorly designed and mechanically unsound is much more damning than anything else. Super Mario 64 still plays like a dream despite any misgivings one might have of it being an early 3D title.

Basically my point is that I don't think that the company who made the game not being around is really a factor regarding why we haven't seen anything else in the franchise. It's more that these partnerships are for one-off games in general.

Interesting that all these games were GameCube games though...

I feel like this is washed with A LOT of hindsight. Super Mario 64, structure-wise and mechanically, is so far-removed from the 2D Mario games. I'd say 3D Land is the most 'by the books' 2D-3D translation Mario has seen.
Oh, yeah, 3D land is, but what I mean is that 64 introduced so very little into the franchise designwise, and what little it did was kinda awful. Its Bowser, in a castle with Toads and Goombas, Pirahna Plants, and Koopas, and then a myriad of generic enemies like the spiders in wet dry land.

And something people shit on Sunshine for and pretend isnt in 64 is how the last several levels feel less polished, when Id sooner play Sunshine pachinko for days than 64's shitty cloud levels.

Did you just ignore the other half of my post or...?

64 controls and plays like ass now, and is only really excused as a part of gaming history for being the first real 3D platformer.

{also, nah, if a game is frustrating, it's aesthetics can push you to continue, whereas if it looked like garbage you'd give up much more easily}

Nah, I just didn't really have anything to address in it. But if you're so inclined...

Mario 64 controls perfectly fine. Better than a lot of 3D platformers today I would argue. Miyamoto said when he first started developing the game, he put in a ton of time to develop Mario's playstyle in an empty room and make sure it feels fun before he started working on any of the levels, and it shows.

No? This sounds like a personal preference. I can't say I agree at all. I also don't agree that 64's aesthetic is unappealing.

I find it funny that the image of Mario eating watermelon is being analyzed to mean Sunshine HD.

Anyways, here's conclusive proof that there will be Zelda, Animal Crossing, and Splatoon kingdoms in Odyssey 2 because Mario has travel stickers of them on his suitcase.

Not a fan of this render tbh. Gimme more realistic textures on Mario's clothing

Why does Mario have a Bowser Oil sticker? Is he complicit in Bowser's role in accelerating climate change?

Super Mario Odyssey 2 should create new worlds again to visit.

BUT Super Mario Odyssey 3 should be Mario visiting Nintendo worlds like Kirby, Samus, Splatoon, DK, Animal Crossing, Starfox and Zelda. OMG it would be so amazing to see Mario go to their worlds.

I wish Mario could quickly turn on a dime when rotating the stick in Mario 64

It's not very noticeable on the big open field stages like Bob-omb Battlefield but it becomes a real pain on the later stages that require more precise platforming like Tick Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride.

I guess we're looking at this from different perspectives. Knowing how these things can go, especially in regards to minor franchises, it's probably extremely difficult to get a project off the ground if you don't have people actively pushing for it. A lot of things would have to fall into place for it to happen because it doesn't need to happen.

Tutorial Level is in the Mushroom Kingdom, then:
  • Legendary Kingdom - Hyrule
  • Jungle Kingdom - DK Island
  • Future Kingdom - Inkopolis
  • Dream Kingdom - Dream Land
  • Peaceful Kingdom - Animal Village
  • Sky Kingdom - Skyworld
  • Tiny Kingdom - Distant Planet
  • Racing Kingdom - Port Town
  • Underground Kingdom - Planet Zebes
  • Space Kingdom - Lylat System
Perfect.

Yeah that makes a lot of sense.

So basically the arcane rite I need to perform involves making Denis Dyack not an ass. Too difficult for me.

I feel like Fire Emblem wouldn't really make for the greatest platforming level. Star Fox doesn't either, really, but I needed a tenth.

Besides; I based my list around the first-party franchises that were Mii Costumes in Mario Kart 8; only adding Kid Icarus (out of bias, and because it's an easy fit).

I think you'd be luckier hoping for a developer to really want to make a horror game for Nintendo and Shinya Takahashi remembering that they actually own Eternal Darkness ;)

The Silicon Knights situation is really quite fucked up though with the Epic lawsuit and that ED art director/co-writer being found with child porn.

I was trying to think of what 3 games Nintendo could announce that would satisfy most of the Nintendo audience. What 3 games would cover the widest spread. As we know the Nintendo fanbase is far and wide. It's a very diverse fanbase compared to others.

I'm thinking of 3 feasible games. They don't have to be the highest selling games mind you. Games that make sense to be announced now. I came up with

-2D Metroid/MPT
-Super Mario Odyssey 2
-Monolith Soft new IP

2D Metroid is kind of a big deal. I know Metroid isn't the biggest franchise, but that's not the point. We haven't had a brand new 2D Metroid in forever. I put Metroid Prime Trilogy because its been asked forever and covers another core audience. Has some shooting.

Super Mario Odyssey 2. I mean what needs to be said about this. This covers a casual and core Nintendo market. It covers platformers. It covers Mario. There goes the vast majority of the Nintendo fanbase with one game.

Monolith Soft new IP- I picked this because I believe it's coming. It covers a core Nintendo audience. It's for those wanting an adventure. It covers the RPG genre and possibly the action genre too.

Some other possible titles were Mario Kart 9, but I don't think that's coming, Pikmin 4, Paper Mario Returns to Roots, and Warioware.
