I'm really peeved with myself because I completely failed. Didn't manage to get a single group today.

I had a couple ideas but they were wrong and I was always "one away…"

Grrrr!!!! I have no clue how some of you found today's easy.

I am American and have NEVER heard Chops nor hero being used in that fashion.

Got there in the end. I think Hero is somewhat regional, if I remember what I've heard about it right? It does come up a few times in puzzles, so I was aware of it. I think 'chops' is largely a Britishism, I'd heard it in terms of 'to get a smack around your chops', meaning to get whacked in the cheek. But I would regard it as more 'cheek' or even broader 'face' rather than 'mouth'.

Didn't like blue, because 'bob' is somewhat divorced from the others. Without bob they're all terms for hand actions. Still, got it eventually!

I'm from New York City, and "hero" is a term that's very specific to here. It's also incredibly common over here, hence why the NY Times might include it.

Chops I guessed because of the phrase "bust my/your chops"; I never thought of what "chops" in that context meant before playing yesterday's game, but I realized that it might actually mean that. A quick Google search just now seems to confirm the term was more commonly used in the older days, e.g. in the 15th century.

Had a brief dalliance in the middle with 'things that rise (to the top)', which is thematically roughly similar to blue in part but included some of the more literal interpretations of the term (bubbles, for instance)

Ugh ALL of those words mean very similar things lol. Purple was the easiest one just because those words didn't fit with anything else.

Offhand I only know how one of the words in purple category actually fits there, but fortunately the rest of the puzzle was so quick and easy that it didn't really matter.

I did understand what theme purple was going for, but 1.5 of the words involved still don't make sense to me.
Cats and Grease are easy enough, but I thought the musical was Hairsprsy and not just "Hair," and I have no idea what show "maim" is supposed to be a homophone of.
