Okay, here goes. Tried to include all info we've got and my estimates for each month of UK hardware so far this year.

373k consoles were sold in Jan+Feb (with 150k+ in Jan and 200k+ in Feb) with PS5 and Switch being neck-and-neck by the end of it (within a few hundred units, Switch slightly ahead). Jan 2020 was about 60k, Feb 2020 was about 70k total units sold, with Switch a fairly comfortable #1 both those months last year. Switch was +21% YoY in Jan 2021 and +80% YTD after Feb, pointing to a huge Feb for Switch, PS5 we found out was about 2k ahead in Feb and about 3k behind in Jan (vs Switch). Xbox stock was also "low" for Feb. So, I estimated this for those months:

Jan 2021: XBS ~60k, Switch ~50k, PS5 ~47k
Feb 2021: PS5 ~87k, Switch ~85k, XBS ~25k

Then March had 217k sales with PS5 being by far #1 and having its second best month (above Feb and Dec). Series X/S also had a good month and overtook Switch into second. Then in April we saw ~90-95k total sales with Switch "comfortably" #1, XBS being up in April compared to March and PS5 having basically a 0 month. So I estimate roughly:

March 2021: PS5 ~135k, XBS ~35k, Switch ~35k
April 2021: Switch ~45k, XBS ~40k, PS5 ~5k

Rough total so far in 2021 (Total of ~680k consoles sold): PS5 ~270k, Switch ~215k, XBS ~ 160k, Others (mostly PS4) ~35k.

yeah I remember this, thank you. Nintendo got a foot into Spain now and it does feel more like 55/45 country in Sony favor (overall sales). PS4 is even selling as if it were 2019 lol

Nice!

PS5 is on some kind of record pace I presume (even after the terrible April)? I wonder how high it can get this year (PS4 did ~1.26M in 2014).

Switch lagging behind in UK, but was #1 YTD in the EMEAA - France/Germany/Spain pulling their weight here. Given the April stock situation, I would imagine it widened it's lead.

That feels like a hefty number for the Xbox. XB1 did ~1.08M in 2014, if MSFT can ramp up production from their lower levels earlier, they mayyy touch that again?

May should be a big month of PS5 restocks after April which should see if return to the to spot. This week there's been a few stores with stock (but still not been even close to bagging one) and I'd imagine over the coming weeks and June will be similar.

From Nintendo's Q&A on supply outside of Japan.

Regarding the current situation for Nintendo Switch hardware, there are no major differences between regions, and demand remains strong overall. However, COVID-19 has caused declines and delays in freight traffic in markets outside of Japan, and retailers in some regions are experiencing temporary shortages. In particular, the accident that blocked the Suez Canal caused delays in the transportation of products bound for Europe, and retail inventories are tight in some countries. In the United States, sales were strong in March, and the supply of hardware is currently not keeping up with the strong demand.

Apr-Jun quarter may get rough for everyone, especially early on.

It's not mathematically possible though. PS5 is at least 35k ahead of Switch if you assume constant sales of "others" in March and April. It could be that others saw a spike in March which reduces PS5 maximum, but I don't see a reason for that.

I am wondering if there's some gaps in the reporting, because it keeps being 4 week periods for each month, there's probably a few days in between each one where the data doesn't get included in the GI.biz report, could be that Switch has sold a lot in those gaps and these reports aren't quite the full picture.

Your March estimate is the one I take issue with. 35k for the Switch there is very low as it even got a new bundle during that month.

Expecting March to be down 50k MoM between February and March is an add one. Looking at other territories, March probably has the highest weekly average of the year so far.

90k total consoles sold in April with Switch #1 means XBS sold at the very most 45k. The fact there are others and Switch was "comfortably number 1" means it's less than that, probably 40k or less.

XBS was up in April over March, so sold less than that 40k in March. Switch was #3 in March behind XBS, so sold less than that. ~35k is about as high as it can reasonably go.

Ah I understand why now.

I don't think XBS is up in April vs March. "More units come to the market" is in comparison with PS5 I believe.

I asked Chris on Twitter and he confirmed it Was up month on month, also later in the article it says "Due to the increased availability of Xbox Series consoles..." so I think that's pretty clear cut.

Chris said for March:

-All three consoles were "close-ish" (Tweet)
Hmm yeah some of things he's said definitely conflict with each other. It's hard to know what the truth is.

Yeah, it's a little odd. But he must have meant that 2 consoles (switch and Xbox) were close.
We know the total amount of consoles sold in March, that it was PS5's biggest month since November (even beating December) and that it overtook WiiU, Vita etc. Combining all those info, PS5 must have lead comfortably in March.

True given we know PS5 was around 450k at the end of 2020 it must have sold >300k YTD by the end of March to be ahead of Vita (I think we had LTD figures of 750k) so if anything I underestimated it, but also that could be weighted Vs unweighted and there might be a few missing days, so ~270k may be about right.

idk, there's clearly some conflicting information here which is why I tried to stick to the definitive statements like up or down MoM, being within hundreds of units etc.

Only managing half of what RE8 did ? That's a weird way of phrasing it unless he expected the game to perform anywhere close to a new manline RE game.

Seems like a good result to me for a Remaster Collection.

Also getting the qualifiers that game X did likely well digital loses it's meaning when it's said for every new release.

I was going through the reports to try and help on this and either Week ending March 6 is just not included at all or February was a 5 week month.

March sales were specified as "over the four weeks to April 3rd, 2021" which means March Week 1 was Week ending March 13.

February doesn't have a specified range that I could find and the article was posted March 15.

It could be January was 4 weeks, February 5 weeks, and March 4 weeks.

Xevross This is what I estimate for the UK so far.

January: >150,000
February: >200,000
March: 217,268
April: Just over 90,000

January + February = 373,426

I'll just say February was ~220K

January
XBS ~50K
NSW ~46K
PS5 ~43K
Others >11K

February
PS5 ~90K
NSW ~87K
XBS ~25K
Others ~18K

March
PS5 ~140K
XBS ~30K
NSW ~30K
Others ~17K

April
NSW ~45K
XBS ~35K
PS5 ~3K
Others ~7K

PS5 was "narrowly behind in third place" from Switch in January and it was ~3K. I'd think a "comfortable" lead would be ~10K in April.

Xbox Notes
- #1 in January
- #3 in February
- #2 in March, saw "new stock" and "boost in sales" which should mean up from February
- #2 in April, saw an increase from March

Switch Notes
- #2 in January, slightly more than 3K ahead of PS5
- #2 in February, 3,000 behind PS5, ahead of PS5 by "few hundred units" YTD
- #3 in March
- #1 in April "Comfortably"

PS5 Notes
- #3 in January, "narrowly behind in third place", slightly more than 3K behind Switch
- #1 in February, 3,000 of Switch, behind Switch by "few hundred units" YTD
- #1 in March, second best month, over Vita, Wii U, and Dreamcast
- #4 in April, below PS4, "significant drop in PS5 console stock"

YTD
PS5: ~275K
NSW: ~210K
XBS: ~140K
Others: ~55K

Also all these numbers are unweighted, so all of these probably go up by +10% for 100% of the market. So ~300K PS5, ~230K NSW, and ~150K XBS.

Vita was ~740K going by the leaked numbers and that was using 100% of the market, so PS5 doesn't need to be near that when the figures we have are unweighted. The leaked report indicated the base sales from GFK were ~91% going by PS4 and XB1 2013 sales, meaning Vita would have sold ~670K unweighted for the PS5 comparison to still be true.

- #1 in April "Comfortably"

PS5 Notes
- #3 in January, "narrowly behind in third place", slightly more than 3K behind Switch
- #1 in February, 3,000 of Switch, behind Switch by "few hundred units" YTD
- #1 in March, second best month, over Vita, Wii U, and Dreamcast (>700K)
- #4 in April, below PS4, "significant drop in PS5 console stock"

YTD
PS5: ~275K
NSW: ~210K
XBS: ~140K
Others: ~55K

Also all these numbers are unweighted, so all of these probably go up by +10% for 100% of the market. So ~300K PS5, ~230K NSW, and ~150K XBS.
Yeah I'd agree with that, pretty similar to what I estimated. I went with ~170k in Japan instead of ~220k in Feb but it balances out to about the same result. Only problem is it clashes with some of the comments about PS5 and Switch being "neck and neck" with YTD sales after April and that consoles were close-ish in March, as other people have pointed out. I guess this is the best we can estimate for now and we can change it later if more info comes to light.

I think that can be explained by him not having the full report at the time, or just a quick glance before writing the article.

For April he indicated both XBS and PS5 had bad months but then later when he wrote the article a few days later he notes XBS actually went up while PS5 cratered.

I don't know about the neck and neck comment. Looking at the market share of ~680K consoles, PS5 would have ~40%, Switch ~30%, and XBS ~20%. Maybe he sees 40% and 30% as neck and neck?

And looking at market share, the estimated March YTD of 590K consoles would be PS5 ~46%, Switch ~28%, and XBS ~18%. Going from that to the April result could also be why Xbox was said to be catching up.

I'm curious how high the PS5 and NSW can go this year. 2020 NSW had the best year among PS4/XBO/NSW at ~1.5M. 2021 seems to be pacing ahead of that (at least it was through March), and after the initial lockdown surge, NSW 2020 had supply/inventory issues I believe. If NSW 2021 is > NSW 2020 and PS5 2021 > NSW 2021, how high can the 2021 totals get?

Yeah there's definitely some differences between full reports and early info, stuff like the 3k gap in Feb was from early info so could possibly be outdated.

This is the clarification I got on the neck and neck comment:

So far the PlayStation 5 sku of Resident Evil: Village was the best selling one in all European markets: UK, France, Italy, Spain, Switzerland.

This was the first big multiplatform game of 2021, the transition will be very fast once again when it comes to software sales.

I assume the splits will favor the old gen SKUs for big mainstream releases (FIFA and COD) while core games are already shifting significantly.

gamesindustry.biz have a feature on Resident Evil's sales history in the UK:

www.gamesindustry.biz

Resident Evil 5 still the top horror | UK Time Tunnel

Resident Evil Village is off to a great start in the UK.At physical retail, it was the biggest launch of 2021 so far in…

But surely those lifetime sales are wrong?

There's no way just the Gamecube version of RE4 or the Dreamcast version of CV would be that high without the PS2 releases added. That Umbrella Chronicles is anywhere near the top ten cements the fact that they're working with incomplete data or someone can't count.
