Resident Evil Village takes the top spot in UK game charts

The horror game is the second biggest boxed launch of the year behind Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. 49% of its sales were on PS5, 31% on PS4 and 20% on Xbox.

It's the third biggest PS5 game launch since behind Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Assassin's Creed Valhalla, which were released in November last year. In fact, week one sales alone has made it the seventh biggest PS5 game so far, behind Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, Demon's Souls, Watch Dogs Legion and Sackboy: A Big Adventure.

It's the second biggest week one for a boxed Xbox Series game, too, behind Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War. It is already No.3 on the all-time Xbox Series list, behind Call of Duty and Immortals Fenyx Rising.

However, it's not got close to the sales of previous Resident Evil games. Sales are down over 25% compared with the launch of Resident Evil 2: Remake (released in 2019) and almost 40% down compared with 2017's Resident Evil 7. It did sell better than last year's Resident Evil 3 Remake, with launch sales 76% higher.

Of course, this is just physical sales, and digital has accelerated significantly over the past 18 months. Considering the game's popularity on Steam, it is likely the game will have achieved strong results once the digital data comes in later this week.

The launch of Resident Evil Village means that last week's No.1, New Pokémon Snap, tumbles to No.2 after a 63% drop in sales week-on-week. Last week's No.2 game, Returnal, falls to No.15 after an 84% drop in sales.

The italian press was among the harshest on New Pokémon Snap, it got only scores between 7 and 7.5, so I'm not surprised it did a bit worse, also the 60€ pricepoint didn't help. Speaking of 60€ Amazon Italy had one of the best deals for Returnal at that price, so I would assume at least some exports have to be factored in.

Actually the combined sales of XBOX platform is much less than the combines sales of Playstation platform and in all cases it is even below PS5 only sales. So i am not sure if XBOX platform holders are buying more on game pass or their actually hardware sales are not very great.

90k consoles in the UK in April Vs 217k in March. The difference is pretty much fully down to PS5 going from 100k+ to basically 0. Sony rushed all the stock for last fiscal year.

Also not sure how Xbox catching up checks out when Switch outsold it this month.

Yeah the S has been the only one getting shipments in the last few weeks and it's no longer selling out, the X has got a few shipments but not as much as march. There's been basically 0 PS5's since March.

This means March looks like:

PS5 > 125k, XBS < 40k, Switch < 40k

Which is kind of what we expected.

Problem being, we know Switch and PS5 were kneck-and-kneck after February and apparently are neck and neck now, but even if you give Switch 50k for April and PS5 0, Switch will be at least 35k behind in March+April.

We know Switch was ahead by only a few hundred units after Feb:

Mathematically, if you assume 0 sales of others, the most Switch could have sold in March + April is 90k, but that would also put PS5 at 127k, making it 37k ahead now and definitely not "neck-and-neck".

Good analysis but also demostrates why I don't pay attention to anything but numbers. Discriptors like "neck and neck", "strong", and the like are all subjective and mean different things to different people.

I expected more for New Pokémon Snap, it has sold a third less copies than Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX. One of the explanations I have is that it was basically tracked for 1 day since Saturday 1, May was a holiday and all shops were closed. Of course this means we should see a softer second week drop than usual.

As a curiosity, the original Pokémon Snap game released 20 years ago sold around 40.000 units during its commercial run, it was a very strong performance for a late Nintendo 64 game, the franchise was at its strongest back then.
