You literally won't be able to buy anything like this for your PC in the next few years

Wrong, Cerny said that by the end of the year we will see 7 GB/s SSDs.

The stock PS5 SSD reads at 5.5GB/s, while most PCIe 3.0 M2 SSDs on the market today hover between 3GB/s and 4GB/s. However, Cerny and Sony expect PCIe 4.0 SSDs capable of speeds of up to 7GB/s to be readily available by the end of the year.

PS5 storage can be expanded with external hard drives or third-party M2 SSDs

But the SSD requirements will be strict, and likely not available at launch

The SSD is pushing the envelope every bit as much as some of the other features you mention like Blu-Ray on PS3.

Also OG Xbox and Xbox 360 both did "HDD installs", before PS3.
PS2: EE + GS combination had tremendous power for their time, competition took years to catch up
OG Xbox and Gamecube launched only 18 months after PS2, not "years"!

I'd argue it's pushing the envelope more then the competition and certainly more then their last gen offering.

Not pushing the envelope? The PS5 SSD has a raw speed that is 129% faster than the XSX SSD. It can reach peak numbers that are 226% higher than XSX. You literally won't be able to buy anything like this for your PC in the next few years, meaning that devs might recommend at least 32 GB RAM for PC ports if you want PS5 equivalent settings. The SSD in the PS5 is insane.

Huh

Who even talked about XSX dude. Why are you always in defense mode?

Man, this console seems so fucking custom in a good way. Last gen was boring as fuck. Now it's getting exciting again with these new consoles and their different approaches.

The PS5 is a lot more innovative than the PS4 though.
Wrong, Cerny said that by the end of the year we will see 7 GB/s SSDs.
PCs would still lack the sillicon IO die (for now at least, it will probably be added into future processors), which is the bigger deal here than the actual NAND chip.

The marketing department push for boost got it over the 10tflop line. Ultimately the PS5 is a disappointment it should have been the best. Sony got complacent Microsoft had a point to prove, they did exactly that.

Compared to the PS4, it's really pushing forward and is way more innovative.

I think the issue here is generally, that the exciting cool stuff is on the deeper levels, not that easily understandable for people who are only looking at the specs and don't have deep knowledge on the matter.

I chuckle when all I see is people defending the SSD speed. You have to come to grips people , it will make everything better. If you hold on to this notion that the SSD speed will save the day, you are just preparing yourself for another round of massive melt downs. Remember this.

Well right now, we still have to see the new AMD CPU/GPU line and Intel solution CPU.

I hardly doubt this new tech will be available only on PS5.
This specific technology is patented by Mark Cerny, but I am sure that AMD further down the line will make their own version of it for their CPU/GPUs.

Wrong, Cerny said that by the end of the year we will see 7 GB/s SSDs.

And how are you going to reach 22 GB/s with that SSD? Or even 9 GB/s? They build a whole I/O system that you won't have on PC. The only way to work around this might be by loading as much game data into system RAM as possible, which means a 32+ GB RAM requirement for PCs if you want PS5 equivalent settings.

Huh

Who even talked about XSX dude. Why are you always in defense mode?

He said PS5 isn't pushing the envelope, I showcased that they do it by using examples.

If what Sony is promising is true, then this is the most efficient and "bottleneck" free console they've ever designed and way more innovative than the PS4. It's also way more powerful than the PS4 was when compared to the PC market and the SSD is the first giant leap in gaming in a long while.

I don't see how you consider the PS4 being innovative but not the PS5. Honestly, the engineering that's gone through this console is remarkable.

It's such a shame that people can't see past (the already impressive) the TF numbers of both consoles and actually see where the main innovation is.

Yeah man let's ignore the developers and reporting from Jason Schrier that PS5 IO speeds are going to allow revolutionary experiences in level design and actual games.

Truly garbage thinking by Sony to invest so much into it.

As with all of these console spec wars, I feel like if you are so concerned about the graphics of these games and want the best, then why are you getting a console? Build a PC. Always been odd to me.

Neither the PS1, PS2 or PS4 really "pushed the envelope" on power. It's just Sony's marketing that makes you think they have always pursued raw power when in reality they have (sensibly) compromised between power and a price point that is acceptable to consumers.

SSD is legit incredible. Don't let fanboys fool you, SSD is the best thing to happen on a PS System in the past 20 years. The fact it's the fastest one in the market, developers are very happy with this.

Yea, PS4 was a decent GPU paired with a laptop CPU. It wasn't pushing the envelope much at all. I'm sure within a few months there were plenty of 'build your own PS4 beating PC for $500' vids on YouTube.

That's certainly a hot take. The PS5 looks pretty exciting to me, the leap over the PS4 will be tremendous. It looks like a very efficient and well designed console.

Probably the most excited I've ever been about picking up a next gen console......game design can actually move forward now(on Xbox too).
Haptic controllers, ray tracing, lightning fast ssd,new audio solutions, powerful new cpu(personally for me the jump to 4K)......see what I mean.....very exciting times!
This is my personal take of course.....I'm pumped about PS5,lol.

Yes yes I know what you think, click-bait title and so, but please hear me out. First, let's take a look at the Playstations of old.

PS1: 3D graphics pioneer, not even the N64 could beat it for number of polygons pushed, bad-ass sound chip, first to introduce dual analog control
PS2: EE + GS combination had tremendous power for their time, competition took years to catch up, bandwidth monster, DVD drive (and player!) standard
PS3: Cell CPU/SPUs produced astonishing results when used properly, first console with Blu-ray drive built-in, first console with HDD installs, first console with HDMI standard
PS4: Almost 2 TF of GPU power (great for 2013), 8 GB of GDDR5 RAM !!! shocker

What does the PS5 bring compared to the competition? An SSD that is twice as fast, sure that's neat I guess but I doubt having 5 GB/s instead of 2.5 GB/s will transform the gaming experience. You can already fill your RAM in seconds, so..

Sometimes I feel that Cerny's talents are wasted in today's Sony, he could have done SO much more if he had been given greater freedom and budget ceiling to work with, surely I can't be the only one that feels PS5 is disappointing spec wise?
PSVR?
SSD?

It's seems much more ambitious than PS4 for sure.

We are moving from :

PS4 in 2013 releasing with a low-ass Tier CPU and a mid-tier GPU, with the 8GB GDDR5 being the only "forward looking" element

To

PS5 in 2020 with both CPU and GPU closer to High-End with an SSD that has seen no equivalent use in gaming in the past

If you are disappointed by that, I don't know if it's by lack of imagination about how this can be used or due to revisionist history but I certainly can't see the same.

If it's because you compare it to what Series X is doing, well, it doesn't make sense either, because Series X is also an incredibly ambitious console trying to push all corners for a large-market product and both consoles are not that different.

This generation looks much more exciting to me than the previous one for sure.
