Yeah i did, and the example you're providing is not a tan..it's a travesty. It just seems that, based on other examples, and how some people are throwing the likes of Ariana, the Kardashians and regular tanning in the same category, that there are people who seems to think that this is as problematic as blackface. Not necessarily here, but reading some those twitter examples and comments.
So derailing with 'thot' failed, we're onto talking about the act of tanning instead of the whole thing happening in the OP?

Ok, what the hell is happening? Why can't we focus on the topic the OP brought attention to?

I don't think comparing Ariana grande when she was on Disney to what she looks like as a pop icon today is a good example of black face. On disney, they dyed her hair red, as a child she probably wouldn't go tanning, and as a child it wouldn't be appropriate to wear adult-styled makeup to try to look sexier. Today, Ariana Grande is an adult, she should be able to straighten her hair, get a tan, and wear makeup without a bunch of mostly adult caucasion men judging her for it.

The supposed blackface photo of "Ariana Today" is what many Italian American people with tans and makeup look like.

I'm sure there's some crazy ass people on Instagram trying to look black or be black, or what have you, and that's wrong and weird. I don't think Ariana Grande fits that description, though.

With Kim Kardashian... I dunno. Yes, she looks very different than she did when she first became famous with that porn video. She's had a lot of work done to remove a lot of her Armenian features. Now, I'm against cosmetic surgery for myself and I really hate the culture of unneccessary cosmetic surgery because I see how it impacts people like my wife who are constantly critical of their perfect features because that's not what the Housewives or Kardashians look like, but... I'm not going to judge someone who feels insecure or feels like they need to get cosmetic surgery to look however they want to look. If Kim Kardashian feels better about herself with thicker lips or with less Armenian features or whatever the heck she's had done, then whatever, it's not my place as a middle aged overweight white guy on a videogame forum to criticize her for it.

While I know she has been through a lot in recent years, I thought it weird she isn't called out for this.

She just got tanned. This isn't blackface. When did tanning become blackface. Don't get me wrong, I don't condone tanning because of health reasons but this is just tanning.

Ha. You had me up until the end.
I'll add my opinion on the topic. This is blackface and it is racist. White people cannot dress up as another race for fashion or art. No matter their intention, it's tasteless, wrong, insulting, and definitely racist.

The concept of blackface is wrong no doubt, but to some extent what you're saying is considered debatable to many today. Like, what are your thoughts on the book Black Like Me and the film Tropic Thunder?

In concept the idea of western beauty standards drifting away from purely caucasian features would on it's surface seem to only be a positive thing, but the downside of that would potentially be caucasians chasing whatever the new standard is. This seems like a preview of that world.
There being a double standard for white people who adopt a minority aesthetic versus the originators of that aesthetic isn't exactly new though.

I mean, people influence each other and the influence of black people is getting bigger.
So that's more of a plus. But in this case some examples are extreme and weird imo. I can understand that it can get problematic at some point. Of course white people getting ridiculous tans and adopting corn-rows have been here for decades. But some of these people are unrecognisable.

If tanning and cornrows are bad

What about black people having weave of long straight hair and skin bleaching.

I was simply stating it has been around for a while. Do they still teach comprehensive reading in the USA?
People living together are going to influence each other and they're going to mix cultural characteristics from each other. It's natural.

In the case of black people straightening their hair to change things up, that's fine. No problem with it. Unless it's because they feel ugly because of the constant beauty standard imposed to us by magazines, movies and other outlets. Skin bleaching too.
There IS a difference and it IS problematic when that is the reason. I rather see people being comfortable with who they are and what they look like.

Some examples in the OP go a bit further than a change of hairstyle and a tan though, wouldn't you agree?

Not talking about Arianna.

Are people serious about that Arianna photo?

My girlfriend is extremely pale and gates her complexion so she puts a little fake tan on sometimes. I best let her know that's absolutely not acceptable.

The Arianna example is the dumbest shit.

A girl with italian genes getting a good tan and now wearing her natural brown hair, paired with makeup?? Yep lock her up.

I can assure you that no amount of skin bleaching will make most black women look white but instead "lighter" in color.

Guess what? I can straighten with an flatiron and my curly hair will revert back to normal.

I'm not sure what you're trying to do here. We were told all are lives that we had to copy a type of hair because it's unpleasant, looks like wool and unprofessional

But when we put the effort, now we wanna be white?

The Ariana post is ridiculous.

Sorry for my blackface when I get tanned during the summer or after visiting a tanning studio.

I was getting at how ridiculous it is to say people who tan and have corn rows are blackface.

In the end I don't give a shit how someone wants to look and dress like, and there is a simple line between tanning and cornrows and actual blackface.

Don't use sloppy analogies. Black women have been told, for decades, that their natural hairstyle is unprofessional and many have materially been punished for not straightening their hair (an expensive process that causes damage).

It's not that black women are trying to "look white" it's that, for many women and for many decades, it was the only way their white co-workers would feel entirely comfortable around them or the only way they could survive the interview phase of their job.

You're comparing that to tanning?

You can do that without having the "but black women want to look white".

I don't know what to say say when Rachel did exactly that : tanned and adopted afro hairstyles and color. There was no simple line between blackface. It straight up was.

No one is saying that tanning is blackface. These girls are doing way more than just tanning.

It's very annoying. "How dare they use the word thot!"...the article isn't about that. "Oh...now TANNING is blackface now?!?"... the article isn't about that either. And like...most people aren't really agreeing with that but whatever.

Late to replying but I did go through the news article earlier today before I left for work. Some of the girls mentioned in the article are very, very obvious with what their doing. The two that were posted in the OP and that other girl from the UK, the one who looks like a blackfaced barbie doll, are the worst of the lot that got mentioned.

At the same time, two of the other girls that are being 'outed' in the article only have black/dark hair and regular tans. They might be deep tans, but nothing too extreme. I've seen people, both men and women, have tans like that all my life during summer months.

Another thing I find disturbing is that all of them seem to have gotten lip injections and nose jobs...

For the asshats equating white girls tanning and even getting corn rows with black face, look at those photos. Clear blackface. It takes a lot of skill, time, calculation, money (makeup is expensive) and planning to acheive those looks. Blackface is not fucking accidental. Those girls have clear intentions of looking black, down to their accessories. Stop projecting your fears of your girlfriend being called out for blackface if she isn't doing this. What the fuck is the matter with y'all?

Are we really saying that tanning is racist ?
I've seen whiter people becoming a lot more "black" then this after a day under the sun.
I really don't see how it's supposed to be "blackface"..
