His eye for visuals is amazing.
I wonder who'll take his place now. SSM has a really strong character art team. If I had to throw a few names into the ring, maybe Dela Longfish or Jose Cabrera (if he's still with them).
They were hiring for an Art Director role for a while, and a few months ago they took it off, he probably left now that the new AD is doing their job well.

Guy is extremely talented and any studio in the world would give a lot of money to have him.

Very curious to see what he ends up doing next.

The NFT talk is tiring, yes, he is lame for promoting and supporting this, but it does not exclude his incredible work in the past 10 years.

There are a few posts in this thread by this time that kind of start edging beyond simple "NFT talk". Like those posts straight up defending sexual exploitation of a women against her consent.

I get that he is massively talented, but now I am leaning back towards... maybe just let him go do his thing and not put him on a pedestal

There's almost 0 way he was fired. Eric Johnson spoke very, very highly of him in many interviews. He's undoubtedly talented as all hell and (NFTs aside) a seemingly good guy. E: Just saw the above. Not a good look but I still doubt this has anything to do with it.

"Not a good look" is not really a descriptor I'd opt to give to excusing sexual harassment of women.

Huge loss for Santa Monica. This guy is very good at his job. Wonder if that means the GOW IP is being shelved for a bit

I expected him to leave to go into NFTs full time last year. Wonder where he'll end up
He just did a Spider-Man cover for Marvel and his 3D sculpts have been made into figures, I believe? He's definitely enough of a name to have a successful freelance career if he wants. Curious if he'll go that route or head for another art director role.

Pretty huge. His style is ingrained in the entire visual design of the games.

Not putting him on a pedestal, but as a Brazilian myself I love seeing people from my country taking such a spotlight in the international gaming industry. His involvement with NFT does not affect his accomplishments to me.

Really? Interested in seeing who it is šŸ§

I was expecting either Dela or Jose especially with how long they've been at SSM alongside Raf, defining the visual style of both GoW games, but if it's someone different, I'm curious.

Looks like SMS has in the end decided to promote from within in search of another art director.
Oooh okay. I gotta say, it's crazy how Raf only joined SSM in 2013 and managed to rise to the position of Art Director. Puts into perspective how much of a generational talent he is.

There is no reason for the GOW to be shelved , SSM has a huge art team and one person leaving not going to stop a new game.
I figured he left because they weren't doing anything with GOW atm? He was the art director for 2018 and Ragnarok so if there was another game in development, wouldn't he do that one too?

Simple could be he get another offer or he just want to free lance or some other reasons .
Happen all the time even if the company still using a IP .

Does dismissing a woman whom he worked with having her image being sold on a fake porn mag against her consent affect his accomplishments?

There are a lot of talented people in the world who aren't assholes. Sony Santa Monica will be fine.

Personally, I feel its a good thing if key people leave from time to time. Changing and evolving can be risky, but it can also work wonders.
As a gamer who is looking for the next high I lean on taking the risky route.

I remember following him on Twitter after GoW 2018 came out but eventually unfollowed a few years back because his NFT nonsense and other opinions were getting really grating. Dude really turned into a full on NFT shill after a while, he was making Elon Musk portraits and Pepe The Frog shit. I didn't even know about that response to Alanah from earlier in the thread but that's really gross. He's obviously a very talented artist but talent is irrelevant if you're going to act like that.

Really disliked the art direction of 2018 (haven't played Rag).

Hope they really do a much better job with a true current gen version of the game.

I'm also of the opinion that the original trilogy had the superior art direction. Still, his style might be more fitting for a less fantastical setting so I wonder where he'd end up next.

Oh. Well, good luck to him, I guess. Even if he left it's not like he couldn't work on future God of War games as an outside contractor.

Maybe he's coming to Capcom as art director on Marvel vs Capcom 4 šŸ˜¦

that would be a perfect fit
his Smash Bros art takes are legendary

Eww. No thanks.

And he wouldn't need to join Capcom in order to do that. DMC5's designer worked on it entirely in an outside capacity.

Wow that's a massive loss! This guy is a true legend, his art is some of the best. Really curious to see what he's working on next.
