It was ok but felt kind of pointless. It was really nothing more than a nod to the original movie. It's nothing like the original and doesn't take it's self seriously at all. It's more like a longer typical jokey episode of the show.
I'm just glad it didn't debunk the original movie being a real occurrence of the supernatural. In fact it was only Velma going on about how the mystery was unsolved. Daphne and Fred explain and accept how did it get solved in the original movie but that involves accepting the supernatural which is something Velma can't do in this iteration of her.
But I'd still say it's in a separate universe of the original. The characters have their slightly different newer personalities of the past few movies and are a lot younger and more immature here than the original Zombie Island which had a time skip of them more grown up with new jobs of their own. Instead of Daphne being the star of her own TV show Coast to Coast with Daphne Blake, they said she was working on a TV station one summer for a school project.
Some screenshots of the flashbacks:
Basically a movie producer turned Moonscar Island into Moonstar Island Resort to trick Mystery Inc in coming back to shoot a Zombie movie for him.
Separate to that a group of three dressing up as Cat People were trying scare away the Director and the Movie cast to search for Moonscar's Treasure buried under the house.
The movie ends not explaining anything more about Simone and Lena or the original Zombies. They stay as the original movie ended completely gone from the island and only appear in flashbacks with only Simone's pendant remaining which the fake cat people believe might reveal the location of Morgan Moonscar's treasure.
The ending alludes that there was more one more real cat creature that survived and remained on the island all this time.
There is continuity from the last movie Curse of the 13th Ghost as the mystery machine has still been sold away and they make it their next goal to get it back at the end of the movie.
