can't you apply the same logic to resetera, and it's cynicism and negativity?
No you can't. Every thread or even majority of the threads aren't cynical or negative. If you are only active in these types of threads then yes it would be the same thing but not the site as a whole.

When it comes to watching toxic streamers you can't say well I only watch him/her from 5-9 pm then 2-5 am. Those are the times he is not toxic.

At least you've realised they're problematic. There are thousands out there that will never realise this and blindly follow these people down all sorts of holes then vehemently defend them to the death no matter what.

Surround yourself in positive things and you'll feel better for it.

You're taking the analogy wrong. Twitch=Resetera, streamers=individual threads. I'm sure I'm not the only one that takes breaks from certain threads so we don't go into a spiral of despair and anger.

If someone considers a community cynical/negative, and notices themselves acting more cynical/negative in response to their time there? Absolutely, that would follow. That being said, this comes across as sort of a knee-jerk "no you!" comeback, rather than a real question.

The point is if someone's reflecting on how the figures and communities they engage with are potentially changing them for the worse, it's important to take it seriously; That's how our minds work.

In a situation where the person is legitimately noticing a change for the worse in their behavior and their relationships that they find troubling, this is pretty insane advice.
What does be your own person have to do with this? Is choosing what media you consume not being your own person? Does being your own person mean not questioning things? I don't get it.

I guess the point I was making is that you should be capable of watching whatever you like, but be aware if it's affecting you or realizing that you either do or do not want to be the same as what you see. The OP mentioned they are being affected and aren't sure if they should stop watching. They have the choice to either stop watching or continue watching, but be aware of their own behaviour and stop the bad habits they are developing.

Yes. I stay the fuck out of Twith because of that. I know not all streamers are assholes but the first thing it comes to mind when I heard/read the word Twitch is just a bunch of toxic streamers screaming and yelling racist stuff on the mic because they lose a fortnite match.

I have literally never seen someone on twitch be racist like that. Your perception is wildly warped and I'd suggest broadening your horizons.

If you love videogames, whatever your tastes, there is probably something you'd really enjoy on twitch.

Only watch Bald God gamer moonmoon underscore ow
op probably does given that he's constantly on the recommended sidebar and has a gajillion subs that spam the same batch of bad emotes in every other channel, it's a pretty bland recommendation that just promotes those that already have all the promotion so how about someone else

like orcastraw, she's got a pretty chill stream with an atypical (and friendly) twitch chat experience

We imitate the behaviors of those we are around, to a large degree - especially when we are younger. That's a big part of human nature, for better or worse. In modern times, this includes people we see on tv or hear on podcasts. Depending on your life situation, these people could be having a huge influence on you. Surround yourself with the kind of people that you want to be like.

Yes, and it's pretty significant that you are able to recognize this. Identifying and leaving a toxic environment is a skill and not everyone can do it.

Of course, how is that even a question?
Well, maybe I'm being too harsh, it's cool that you are able to recognize this and ponder changing.

Does watching Mad Men and Breaking Bad make me into a cynical ad man coke dealer? Where or when does engaging with media turn us into the things we fear or hate?

I agree that media can have a negative impact on your life (and relationships) if you engage with things that are beyond your age range or understanding. Sometimes we think all media is created equal and neutral in it's attempt at our attention (and money duh), but in reality there are a lot of movies and games out there that are trying to get you believe in certain things (inadvertently or not) and if you can't responsibly navigate complex or subversive ideas then you're better off staying away, especially if it starts to interrupt your behavior (hygiene, work, family.) It's this reason why we try to keep children away from certain media, because their underdeveloped mind cannot create the context necessary to grapple with the realities of certain ideas or spaces (porn, war, basic economic, gambling, addiction.)

Of course my above argument allows for the possiblity to swim in the pool of toxic, dark, subversive, media and still come out clean, but only as long as you are responsible about how you obtain or disseminate your interests.

Yeah, don't watch that shit.
There are a million things more interesting to do or see than people being assholes. Don't waste your time with that.

Am I the only one who finds that trashy entertainment doesn't necessarily impact my behavior? Why do being a good person and watching Jerry Springer need to be mutually exclusive?

Yes, absolutely. Remove any and all toxicity from your life, including toxic Twitch streamers, lest you become toxic yourself (and it sounds like you already have, by your own respectable admission).

That's just good general life advice, though. It doesn't apply specifically to your situation, OP.

Weird majority here saying watching toxicity makes you toxic. Seems along the lines of violent video games make you violent.

The argument should be that you shouldn't be supporting toxicity, not that it's turning you toxic.

I don't think this place makes me more cynical or feeling more negatively. Sometimes the extent this place tends to go is more comedic.

I also don't think being around or watching assholes/toxic people makes you more of an asshole/toxic. However I think YMMV and it probably depends on how strong your existing personality is versus how open you are to being shaped (knowingly or subconsciously).
