Here is below the PS4 Yearly Software Sales since FY2015
(doesn't include "download only software titles" ; no data before FY15 because it was not provided)

This is the Quarterly Software Sales since FY16, with the Physical/Digital split

Now you can take a look below at the evolution of PS Plus subscribers and Software digital ratio over years

orhFaRr.png

Here is now the Quarterly Physical Software Sales on PS4 since FY2016 (from April 2016 onward)
And the interesting stat : Sony's average gross margin per physical copy sold

For a $60 retail game, publishers have to pay about $7-10 to Sony as a license fee (publisher's gross margin ~ $33)
For its own first-party games, Sony's gross margin will be as high as ~ $40
When Sony's average gross margin is higher than $7-10, that's because it's inflated by the performance of its exclusives
  • Q1 FY16 (Apr-June 2016) : Uncharted 4 release
  • Q4 FY16 (Jan-Mar 2017) : Horizon Zero Dawn
  • Q1 FY18 (Apr-June 2018) : God of War & Detroit
  • Q1 FY19 (Apr-June 2019) : Days Gone
Q2 FY18 (July-Sept 2018) with Spider-Man didn't go higher (despite good performance), probably because of huge sales of annual sport titles (Madden/NBA 2K/FIFA) which lowered Sony's average gross margin

    • $18.19B Revenue is the 2nd best Revenue for any platform holder in video game history

Unlike previous cycles of consoles, fiscal year prior to launch (FY19) saw huge profits thanks to :

  • recurrent Services Revenues
PlayStation expect about 70% of FY19's Profit for their FY20 which gives about ¥167bn Profit ($1.52B)
  • It would be the 4th best Operating Profit ever for PlayStation (while it is a launch year, known to be loss-making)

Dang physical now only accounts for 1/3 of game sales.

Will probably be down to a few diehards at the end of the gen.

Thank you for this thread.

Amazing performance by Sony. Only about 45 million to go to beat the PS2 and become the best selling console ever. Considering the price the PS4 sells at this performance is astounding.

PS5 is gonna be so f'ing huge too.

I wonder how close it will get to the ps2. If new consoles weren't coming this year it maybe would've had a chance.

59.6 million games sold in January-March!
I did not expect PlayStation to beat the record from last year, but well, there it is.

It's impressive how much software the PS4 is selling. 4 straight years of over 200 million

125 million lifetime at a mininum seems like a lock. Now reinvest into even more killer exclusives and some good acquisitions.

With the economic crisis the PS4 is going to stay an attractive buy even longer than people originally thought. It was always going to stay around for a few years after the PS5, but it is the perfect device for gamers who want upcoming releases but need a very cheap entry point. All Sony has to do is give it the right pricing since it is still fairly expensive at this point of its lifecycle

That's a figure for this quarter I think. Covid might be an influence in that jump - will be interesting to see if it remains so high afterward. Could well be, the current situation might be forcing more people onto digital stores and perhaps they won't look back.

I wonder also to what extent covid is boosting ps+ membership. What was membership at the end of fyq3? That seems like an outsized increase vs the previous trend.

Considering the generation has been winding down, and 2019 was a bit of a quieter year for big releases in my opinion, that's a seriously strong showing.

I can't begin even visualise 110 million PS4's.

This is pretty funny to see considering how many think pieces we had before this gen started about how consoles are done.

that pie chart shows how insignificant the revenue from hardware sales is compared to digital/physical software and network services.

A very significant amount of Fortnite and other micro-transactions in that total I would think. And covid definitely pushed digital up as well.

Lmao it feels like we have been anticipating that price drop since forever

They might finally do it with PS5 releasing, but not by $100. Maybe $50 at best. PS4 will still be the cash cow for a year or two.

Ps+ numbers bump is impressive. They need to change online paywall system next gen since it looks worse day by day compared to ps now at same price (so does gp compared to gold).

It's still got a chance imo! There are a lot of things that will keep it going:

- it will be sold at least another 3.5 years from now, maybe longer if Sony sees fit
- the MSRP is still 299 USD, we should see large sales boosts with each price drop. Dunno if it can possibly go as low as the 99 dollar PS2, but I can see 149 pretty easily in a couple of years.
- the ps4 slim will eventually come and will probably accompany the aforementioned price drops.
- ps now will continue to grow and eventually a ps4 could be a cheap way for people to access the service on their TV and play some PS5 games
- as the price goes down it'll trickle into emerging markets and with its mammoth library of games and PS Now it should be very enticing to those consumers.

I really do think it has a shot of dethroning the PS2.

Most of the lockdowns didn't start until mid/late march so the majority of game sales would be before.

Next quarter will probably be even higher.
