Thanks for the replies everyone. Not sure if I'll pull the trigger on this sale, but maybe next time it goes on sale I'll jump in. I want something I can play while I am busy working on my computer and also something I can dump my emulation collection onto. I love my SWOLED but I have a massive steam backlog that isn't getting any smaller.

That's pretty much me. Love the Deck.

I also have an OLED TV. I don't know why I find the Deck so immersive. I think it's just nice to have a handheld with such great ergonomics and speakers. It makes me love handhelds in a way I'd always wanted to, but never could.

Got my Steam Deck in the mail, this thing is badass haha. I felt guilty spending the money on it, as soon as I got it set up I did not feel guilty anymore

So I have emudeck installed, but now I am reading I can't plug my SD card into my PC to put my ROMs in their folders because windows won't read it :/

I don't have a dock or a USB-C flash drive, that kind of sucks. Is there another way to move files from my PC to the Deck?

There's a few ways depending on how much effort you want to put into it.

1.warpinator - free
Probably the easiest. You download the warpinator app from the App Store on your steam deck. You then install an app called winpinator on your windows machine. This allows you to transfer files over your network.

2. USB C hub - $15
I recommend getting one of these if you plan to tinker with your steam deck. Allows you to plug in periphials and external drives. You can get cheap ones for around $15.

3. Separate sd card
Steam Deck will read a windows formatted drive. You just have to mount it from desktop mode.

4. Live Linux USB stick - free
If you're familiar with Linux you can make a bootable usb stick with a distributor like Manjaro. This will natively read your steam deck sd card.

Thanks for this! I had no idea the game had a Switch version tbh and I'm yet to try any community layouts so appreciate your help!

Even for games that I have no issues playing on Deck right out the gate... I almost always check Community Layouts anyway. I like to see if there are any that streamline things or just make the default even better. It really is an overlooked perk that I know some people just sort of forget about. I mean I get it, if it works already then why bother? You'd be surprised to find a wonderfully detailed Layout, from time to time, made by someone that just LOVES a game and has spent hours creating. Maybe it just me, but I love that stuff.

I used iCloud to transfer from my Mac to Deck. If you have a similar cloud service with enough storage space, you could try that.

Otherwise, a lot of people use a tool called Syncthing. A bit more involved, but seems to work well. If you search "syncthing Steam Deck" on YouTube, there are a bunch of tutorials.

Honestly just get a cheap usb C adapter maybe? For moving screenshots n other files I kinda find it invaluable. Personally really enjoy my dock mostly as a charging station but if I need to hook up mouse and keyboard I can easily. Not the official one just some cheap one off Amazon. Another easy solution would be just dump it in google drive or something and download it.

Just download DeckyMTP via Decky Loader and it will make your Steam Deck act like a regular USB drive when you plug it in to your PC including the content of the SD card. I just transferred over 20 gigs of PS2 games via drag and drop.

I FTP to the Deck from my laptop and transfer things that way. Just use a free ftp client and Google a guide on how to do it.

Wow I stepped away to set up Chiaki4Deck and got 5 answers haha thanks y'all! I apologize in advance if I have a bunch of questions, I am doing the best I can over here haha

I do have an extra SD card I can use so that's good, will check out the Warpinator and Decky things, and will also invest in a lil USB hub, sounds like I will need it eventually. Also going to snag a wireless keyboard and mouse for tinkering.

Welp - my R1 button no longer works. That's annoying. Been grinding SF6 hard on my deck but now it's unplayable :(

Guessing I'm going to have to repair it? Anyone else had anything similar happen?

I know that the Steam Deck has a subpar screen, but it really surprises me how some much older handhelds I have here also seem to have better looking screens. Comparing it with a 3DS XL with a top IPS panel and a Shield Portable, the Steam Deck just has this hazy look to it. Could that also be due to the anti glare coating?

Just finished Everhood after getting it at the Summer Sale and wow, what an experience. I basically launched it and didn't play anything else until it I finished it (there's a new game plus though that I'll be jumping back into after I've had some time to reflect.) It's a 'put the good headphones on' type game. The Deck's speakers are great but not quite good enough to hear everything in the music.

I loved the story so much, and it has custom track support exclusive to the PC version. It looks similar to and definitely takes some inspiration from Undertale, but it is its own game I promise.

A small technical note that towards the end I noticed load times were taking up to 10 seconds, and so I relaunched it and that fixed things. Seems like the game has a memory leak or something, as I got the tip off from people talking about the Switch version having the same issue. Wouldn't have noticed this if I was playing on a desktop, but the sleep mode of the Deck essentially made it one long session.

Nah it's not the anti-glare - I have the 256 GB deck and it looks like that too. The deck just genuinely has a very bad LCD panel. Black mark on an otherwise amazing device.

I think this is a problem people have found and I wish they went for membranes instead of micro switches.

Seems that the switch in question can be harvested from an old xbox controller (looks like the sync switch? Would be good if there was a resource for sourcing parts). Also kinda miffed that Valve hasn't put more replacement parts up through ifixit.

If it's the button assembly they have it on ifixit. Otherwise this vid:

Should valve look to steam machines again? The deck has maybe reopened that door for a device with perfect deck compatibility.

Could anyone with the official dock please provide some info on how well it works for streaming games from desktop to a tv? I just moved into a new place where I can no longer just run a long HDMI cable from my desktop to my living room tv. I had previously tried using steam link on a raspberry pi and never got it to work satisfactorily; there were either issues with the video encoding not working right, latency, or no audio. I'm hoping that using the deck itself will avoid those issues and work better out of the box but I still have some concerns.

My desktop uses a 3440x1440 144hz monitor which needs to be translated to the deck's 1280x800 60hz and then ultimately to the tv's 4k 60hz. Going from 21:9 to 16:10 to 16:9 will definitely cause some issues with black bars or stretching, I can cap my desktop refresh rate to either 120 or 60hz to avoid screen tearing but it's a bit of a pain to keep switching it. When I had tested it from either desktop to pi or desktop to deck I changed the resolution for each game when I opened it but then had to keep switching back when I wanted to play in my office. It may be easier to just temporarily change the desktop resolution but I am still wary of adding an extra level of translation from deck to tv.

My new setup doesn't have an ethernet port by the tv but does have a coax port, I plan to just get a converter to minimize any wifi related latency. Could anyone with a fully wired setup share their experience with latency? It was pretty unbearable when I tried it on wifi and I'm not sure how much is inherent and can't be removed with a wired connection. I will be using steam controllers with the deck that will add a touch of latency that, while not significant on its own, may be noticeable when combined with other latency.
Have a official dock and do use my deck for in home streaming to a TV in another room and it works almost flawlessly

There is a way on the settings on desktop app to force resolution to change without manually changing it beforehand. My main desktop is 1440p144hz for gaming but when streaming I limit it to 1080p60hz when streaming under steam ->settings-> remote play on my desktop. Additionally, by toggling off automatic resolution scaling to manually change the deck's resolution from its native resolution to something else like 1080p or 4k, it'll keep that setting when docked to that particular device I believe as I haven't had to tinker with the decks resolution after getting it setup for docked play to be something higher than native resolution.

As for performance I used a PS5 controller wired to the dock along with wired Ethernet and didn't notice much if any any lag when playing docked. Some games I've played recently at Destiny 2/Sonic transformed/Battlefront 3/Crash Trilogy/Sonic Generations/Cold Steel IV

Anyone's Steam Deck kill their whole WIFI network when downloading? Mine is downloading a game relatively slowly (~2 Megabytes/s reported in UI) and all my other devices lose internet connectivity while this is going on. When the Steam Deck isn't using WIFI, I'm getting 150+ Megabits/sec by the SpeedTest app. Not sure what is going on. I tried changing WIFI channels and such to no avail. Same issue on 2.4 and 5 ghz.

You shouldn't have to deal with the Deck's internal screen at all when streaming to a TV. If you want 16:9, set your computer up for 2560x1440. Set your steam deck docked display resolution to either 1080p or 1440p, then have your streaming solution match that resolution.

For minimal latency and best quality just use moonlight instead of the official steam stuff. The sunlight server is very mature and gives you more control than nvidia's shield streaming plus AMD support. Then you set up moonlight as a non-steam game on the deck. In its properites set its resolution to match your deck's docked display resolution.

Note that the Deck/moonlight can easily do 1440p/120hz over ethernet. As long as your computer can keep up that is, you won't have the benefits of VRR unfortunately. WIth the sunshine client its also seamless to downscale to 1080p while the computer is running 1440p if you need to for some reason.

Anti-glare is a bit hazy, but also keep in mind the 3DS VC uses 1:1 pixel mapping for the unit's own 400x240 display, so its probably the sharpest device in spite of having the lowest resolution. Plus the way the paralax barrier works when its inactive, it makes a nice natural scanline type effect.

No, I don't - maybe something else is flooding your network or something. If it's only downloading at 2 MBps and you're OK with that, you can try capping the download speed in Steam (at least, in Desktop mode). That way, maybe you can rule out if it's the Deck, specifically, doing something out of the ordinary.

I didn't cap the speed, so I have no idea why it's so slow either. Maybe related to the other issue of killing the network.

This is why I sold my Deck. It's *really* bad - but also makes me super excited for any kind of revision, it's so close to being truly perfect

Augh, I'm such an idiot sometimes. I was so excited to get going today with Emudeck. Bought a USB drive with one-day delivery only to realize, derp, biggest of derps, I kind of need a USB-C adapter (or better yet, I should have purchased a USB-C drive in the first place). So, that'll arrive here sometime after work tomorrow. lol

Weird issue: I just bought a game (Terrordrome) and Steam is insisting that it's 0 bytes when I try to install it. It then immediately completes the download (of no files) and shows it as installed.

Trying to play just gives an error saying that the executable is missing.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, installing from desktop mode, and searching the options, but I can't find any solution.

Anyone encountered this issue with a game before?

It's probably trying to download a Linux native version that doesn't exist. Try manually setting it to use Proton.

Wife's been playing Witcher 3 all night tonight on her new Deck without issues. Then all of a sudden it started freezing on her. Kept getting worse and worse. First she could at least access the Steam menu and close the game. Then it started happened quicker and restarting the system on it's own.

This last time it happened only like 10 minutes into a session. Any ideas? We've tried restarting it and let the shaders download. Using Proton 8, could try another one I guess.

I hadn't really used mine in months, but recently started to again after getting some serious post-Tears of the Kingdom depression after finishing it. LOL Easing myself in with some smaller games like Planet of Lana and Dave the Diver, plus some emulation after getting EmuDeck and its supporting stuff updated.

Sounds like it could be an overheating issue. If you turn the Performance overlay level to 3 or 4 in the Quick Access Menu (the battery symbol in the menu you open with the button on the bottom-right that has three dots), what are the temperatures reported for the GPU and CPU when the freeze happens?

If I buy Control Ultimate Edition on Steam, is there a way to edit my save file so I have whatever abilities I want and still play on Steam Deck? I want to replay the game, but since it doesn't have a NG+ option, I figured Save editing was the next best option.

Kinda sounds like overheating? Is the fan kicking in properly? Can you hear it? I've read that some peoples back plate were screwed on too tight which caused the fan not to spin.

Also the advice above (which was posted as I finished typing haha), is a good thing to check as well to know what the issue is.

Last resort if it's nothing to do with heat, is to factory reset.

If you have Decky Loader, I think there's a plug in called Memory Deck that might be able to do that.

Control does have a built-in accessibility option for God mode I think, so if you don't want to mess with save files, you might be able to turn that on Rush through to get the abilities, and turn it off when you have the ones you want.

Do you still own the original backplate? There's no way they would know you replaced it unless a tab broke.

Yeah, I still have it, could swap it back easily. Though I would've thought opening it up wouldn't be an issue given how pro-repair they are.

I might just try and fix it myself as opposed to sending it away for many weeks. Maybe replace the sticks with hall effect sensors as well.

This has to be added to the launch options.
Seems to work for Divinity and BG3.

I had chiaki4deck working so beautifully and now it suddenly doesn't even acknowledge that my PS5 exists. I've got remote play turned on, tried a static IP address, tried adding my PS5 manually, re-setup Chiaki, turned everything off and on multiple times… sadness. Anyone have any similar experience?

It was such a good experience I'm now willing to buy the stupid PS5 streaming handheld if I can't get this figured out.
