Yep, miss those 90% off deals. Now the big sales are just the same as regular weekly sales except the whole store is on sale at once.

I think the main reason they ditched flash sales was because of the refund system. Just causes over use of it because you'd buy something then it appears on flash sale, so you have to refund and buy again.

You're exactly right, those two changes came hand in hand. People would buy things with the base sale discount and then feel burned when it appeared as a daily. Ironically, the discounts we get in modern sales is similar to the base discounts we back got then, so we just lose out on the deep discounts.

I get why they did it though. Refunds are probably nice for the people who use them. And for devs, people are more likely to just buy a game that they want upfront instead of waiting for a daily to happen.
