Yikes. Really not a fan of how much more washed out / whited out / desaturated Ultimate looks in pretty much every shot. Lucina's hair looks nearly grey. :( Really hoping it's something they'll fix / roll back before release.

With the Switch being a portable console now, and Nintendo's lack of pursuit of a "power console" I can see why Microsoft and Nintendo are more willing than ever to work with each other.

Minecraft is probably doing amazing on Nintendo consoles, or something. There has to be some basis or ground for this "buddy buddy" that's been going on lately. Maybe that has nothing to do with Smash Bros. But if people are saying that this isn't anything new or out of the ordinary is kidding themselves.

some of these are quite nice, others about the same. Only one I'd say is worse is DK which is weird since I like the updated Diddy fur texture. Hopefully he gets another pass before release.

Dr. Mario in particular looks nicer which surprised me. Something about the coloring and the revised coat & undershirt textures

Elma and (maybe) Captain Toad being in the game doesn't mean that Wonder Red won't. I feel like with Bayonetta in, another Platinum rep that is first party Nintendo would be relatively easy to organise, and Kamiya has shown that he loves characters from games he directed being in Smash. And like I said - PROPORTIONALLY Wonderful 101 shits on Xenoblade's (and several other Smash entrants') sales/overall game sales ratios.

Thanks for doing this. I absolutely love the new lighting engine and all the new designs/animations. I really like what they did with Mr. Game & Watch.

Nintendogs didn't become a recurring big IP like Rhythm Heaven tho. Also, RH actually has characters.

Loving the look of Ultimate, The scale is looking different but it could be just the pictures. Villager not much but most of the rest is a big improvement.

At the time of Smash 4, Nintendogs was a recurring series though.

I'm not seeing why the Rhythm Heaven IP is considered likely for a character any more than say a Nintendo Land character. It just seems to circle back to that Smash 4 Chorus Kids concept.

Duck Hunt Dog was like Ice Climbers, Game & Watch, and ROB: the Retro pick.

Villager is from a massively popular franchise.

Wii Fit Trainer was deliberately meant to be an Out There choice.

Marth was there to rep Fire Emblem (and apparently was supposed to be in the first game), and Roy was there to promote his upcoming game.

I'm not saying it's impossible or that I don't want him, but given the failure of his game and Sakurai's statement that games with no future tend not to get representation, I don't think his chances are good.

I mean, dude, I also would love him, but he's not comparable at all to these characters. Duck Hunt and ROB are retro characters, Wii Fit Trainer is from one of Nintendo's biggest sellers, Villager was heavily requested lol, Marth was heavily requested as well and Ike wasn't that much but he was a character from the 9th FE game.

W101 is a recent flop, no other game in Smash fits this.

Woah there! For one, Villager was a popular request people thought impossible because of Sakurai's comments. Two, I'm sure Marth was wanted by the Japanese fanbase at the time. Three, I definitely wanted Duck Hunt Dog.

Look at those franchises you've listed, though. They've sold well, or are part of a larger series that's sold well. Did W101? What's the future of that franchise? At the moment, it's looking like a whole lot of nothing.

I'm expecting quite a few newcomers that don't fit the rules of newcomers in past smash games.

People keep saying "bottom of the barrel" and if that's true, we're going to get a lot of popular requests and maybe a few niche ones too. I think as far as sales go, it's not going to be as big of a factor anymore.

I actually think that there are some decisions made more in terms of prestige than on selling power. Mother gets a lot of love, and while we might not see it on bestsellers lists, the games appear high up on Famitsu's top Nintendo games list as determined by reader votes. Same went for Xenoblade, which was why I was confident that Shulk was going to be in Smash 4 going in.

That's most of them, and from what remains, Famicom Detective Club and Banjo Kazooie reps have both been discussed by Sakurai before. Famicom Detective Club got its trophy in Melee. Joy Mech Fight's main character was planned as an item in Melee and is an assist trophy in Ultimate now. Magical Vacation's got a number of trophies in Brawl.

Now, I'm not nearly confident enough to say that Wonder Red is likely because it's a little more than just niche. But I feel that he had some possibility get on for this reason, particularly as a DLC pick as that would already be geared more to the core audience. He does appear highly in online polls on English-speaking websites, so I don't think it's totally outside of belief that he could be in a Bayonetta situation.

The only new things shown by the blog have been music

e: And of those I think only Snipperclips & Brinstar Depths weren't in the demo. And Brinstar was an at-launch tune, not one detailed by the blog.

Yeah, but Rhythm Heaven hasn't even been given the Nintendogs treatment despite it being well past the point that it'd deserve it. Like, if Rhythm Heaven got a stage, a remix, and an assist trophy I might be convinced that that's all it's gonna get because Sakurai doesn't think it's the right fit for a fighter. But it has none of that. And while there's nothing to really support this but my gut feeling, I feel like the absence of Rhythm Heaven stuff is due to them planning to add a bunch of stuff alongside Chorus Kids, but then scrapping it all and saving it for the next game after it was determined that the Chorus Kids were no longer on the roster.

You're definitely right on the series being a weird absence so far in Smash. I feel like it has to be getting something more substantial this time around.

I don't get "bottom of the barrel" as a complaint, it's a good thing if you ask me. I don't see it as desperation to fill out a roster, but more as a chance for those "bottom of the barrel" characters to not be at the bottom anymore.

The two characters I want the most, one is a Zelda one-off villain and the other is the protagonist of a series in constant limbo.

I want both of them to be considered 'Nintendo all-stars' but to many others, they're considered 'bottom of the barrel'

Do we think this roster is going to have more characters from previously unrepresented series, or more characters from previously represented series?

I think more characters from previously represented series, personally. I feel like Sakurai's going to focus a lot on fan favorite requests. I'm sure there's still more new franchises that will join, though!
