What do you predict it will score?

  • 100 (First Perfect Metascore Baby!)

  • 95-99 (Sorry Sakurai, Still Not Perfect)

  • 90-94 (As good as Brawl)

  • 85-90 (Worse than Brawl)

  • Below 85 (does it even count as a game at this point?)

Can't wait for the user score to immediately be 5.0 because no Waluigi

Personally since Sora isn't in ityet, it would be a 99.99995 for me.

It will be a better game than Brawl, but will get a lot of (unfair?) criticism claiming it is a Brawl 1.5

So probably 8.8 or something.
LMAO what, I can see the argument if you look 2 seconds and only look at the artstyle for the comparison to 4, but Brawl? That's just insane, also reviewers will have played the game and see how much it differs from 4, compared to the people that only looked at 5 SEC of gameplay and nothing else a few months ago.

97

Tbh my gut tells me 95-96, i wanted to be optimistic and go 96 (i didn't want to give a range since there are only 10 posible numbers and 4 of them are almost impossible) and once i was on 96 i decided to bump it to 97 because then it will complete the switch trinity of Mario Zelda and Smash all 97 and tbh the game deserves it.

It is the perfect storm, it has way more content than any other smash, it has a better singleplayer than any other smash, the newcomers may be fewer but all of them are high tier either in mechanics, fan favouritism or both, it is in a system people actually enjoy and Sakurai has put all his heart on it, which i think this time will be something in the mind of most reviewers.

Smash Ultimate as the name indicates is the ultimate smash, at the right time and at the right console. For a series which floor is 92, this game getting less than 95 is unlikely, and while there will problably be some reviewers that will take issue with some of its elements cutting short its chances of perfection, it will get pretty close.

This is tough, because I hate disappointment. I'll keep my expectations at 93. I really can't see how this scores less than Brawl (besides being broken) .

I'm not even slightly invested in the scores, but for those of you who are, keep in mind that when reviewers tally up pros and cons for their summary box at the bottom, one could imagine SSBU getting dinged for its relatively meagre offering of brand-new characters and stages, along with its removal of arcade/high-score minigames.

I remember that for SSB4, at least one publication was bright enough to commission a "double review" by somebody with an eye for advanced/competitive mechanics who was able to write one piece for generalists and another for specialists. Even as a non-competitive player, I recall that quite distinctly as the only review of SSB4 worth reading, as it was written from a position of care and expertise. That is what I'll be looking for once the embargo drops.

Apart from that, the whole reviewing circus for this game just doesn't matter. Everyone already has a good idea of what this is, and if they've played any Smash in the past, understands whether this offering is up their alley. All the game needs to do is deliver exactly what was promised and what has already been amply shown to the public. Press reviews for known quantities in established series like this may as well go the way of sportswriting and be left to machine generation; I'm not convinced I'd see the difference.

Smash is like Pokemon in that the average reviewer and the diehard fanbase look for vastly different things. Reviews are always similar to, "There sure is a lot of characters I like to see Mario and Link on the same screen 9/10" but fans look for very specific elements to base their decision on.

I agree. Just earlier today I wrote this:

[...] That said, reviews seemingly completely don't matter for this game. For almost all games, even ones that are expected to be similar to their predecessors, I always see people in the lead up to release date speculating about what the reviews will say and throwing out predictions for the Metacritic score.

I'm not seeing any of that for Ultimate. No one cares.

Ironically, this topic was posted hours later. Thanks a lot, Phantom.

94. Ultimate fighting game anthology, but will get points dinged for the lack of a proper campaign and the gameplay loop staying largely the same.

I still think it will lend low 90s, because "lesser" entries have managed to do so before.

But you never know. High eighties are not out of question, though I'd be surprised by anything lower than that.

Even a couple of 7s can lower the score a lot.

90-94.
It isn't perfect and 2D google pictures behind a cheap mobile game system will never replace collectable trophies for me.

But the GameCube controller special edition is pre ordered and I can't wait to play it.

I think critics will knock it for Spirits mode which doesn't sound too hot. Quality of online play is also a factor. I'm thinking low 90s, 91-92.

Is there any reason to be excited about Smash reviews. The games are iterative, so you know exactly what you're getting.

Fanboys on all sides love review threads because they can fight over other people's opinions of a game they haven't played. Even for something iterative like Smash bros. Logic has never been an important factor in this forum's obsession with metascores.

95+ The game looks incredible, surely it will play even better and the character/music selection is the best in the industry.

I can even see the game joining the 97 club (BotW, Odyssey, and yeah.... RDR2...) if the online game and World of Light are really good.

I'm thinking 96 MC. Will be interesting to see for sure. Such a large MC score vould really boost its sales out into the stratosphere.

Nah, I don't think that the MC score will affect the game's sales whatsoever. It's Smash. What kind of person would only buy it at 96 and not buy it at 92?

By the way, I've changed my mind. Since review score don't matter, there's no reason not to hope for the best. Ultimate will be the very first perfect 100 on Metacritic! Mark my words!

I predict a sea of 9s/10s except Slant who will give it a 7, no one will be surprised

Low 90s is a reasonable prediction, sure, but I don't see why some people think it will break the 95 barrier.

Only a tiny handful of games have managed that feat this gen,

My pessimistic guess is 90, if only because if Smash 4 could get 92 and MK8DX could break it's original metascore, it stands to reason that this ought to at least do a similar range in that regard as well. I don't expect it to do much better than that because reasons.

Think it will get a lot of 9s under the Edge Magazine philosophy of 10 requiring some paradigm shift .. Being perfectly what you expected not being good enough for perfect.

95

85-88. Some of you guys are crazy thinking it'll score so high, it's never gotten above 93 before. It'll be criticized for being so similar to previous entries.

Everybody is here. Someones favorite character is bound to be in the roster which is an immediate 9. I predict a 95.
