For a movie with a highly acclaimed soundtrack, it is sad that many viewers in this Blu-ray age have probably never even seen the movie with the original BGMs. The OST and the 5.1 remixes use alternate, and IMO worse versions for some of the BGMs that have not been used on the original theatrical mix.

The original theatrical mix was fine, so I don't understand why Tsutomu Ōhashi had to keep tinkering with the mix over the years. The 2001 5.1 remix and 2009 Hypersonic remix were not good IMO. There's clipping, sound effects have been replaced with inferior effects and a total of 14 (2001) and 16 (Hypersonic) BGMs out of 34 have been altered in some way or replaced.

Where can I watch this?

And I want to see the original with the proper SFX etc, I looked a little while ago and was confused by reviews etc about poorer audio quality and just walked away confused.

I can't believe there hasn't been any 26 episode adaptation for the manga at least...

It could gave more story than the movie version.

It's in my all time top 10.
The manga is my favorite comic-book ever and yet I do think that the film is the superior version of the story.
A superb achievement in sci-fi aesthetics, I just love to get lost into that world, as uninviting as it is. It's the Blade Runner effect basically. While I do like the story and the characters, they are not the reason why I am drawn to this film. I love it because of its mood, its sights, its sounds.

Finding a copy of this film was my holy grail as a young teen in the 90s. Living in the middle of nowhere in the era of vhs, I wanted to see this film so bad because of the manga but couldn't find it anywhere. I racked up a massive minitel bill (France's prehistoric version of the internet) trying to find it but with no luck. My mom thought I was looking at porn, haha. And when I was around 15 or so, I finally happened upon an ad to order the vhs at the back of the tv guide. I jumped all over the place when I saw that.

And when I first watched the film, it didn't meet my expectations due to years of fantasizing about it of course. But I slowly grew to appreciate it and as I said, it is now one of my all-time favorites.

I can't believe there hasn't been any 26 episode adaptation for the manga at least...

While I prefer the movie to the manga I completely agree with this.
I want to see a complete adaptation. It could work as a mini-series too. Even if it would probably be severely scaled down compared to the ambitions of the first film, I'd still want to see that happen.

In 1996, age 16, i was working my first ever job sweeping platforms and checking tickets in train stations. Cleaning the platform one day i found someone had left behind a copy of a magazine called 'Manga', so i took it. It had the final part of the Akria manga reprinted in it, and even reading just the end of the manga, knowing nothing about it at all i was like "this is so cool". Hunted down the VHS, watched it over and over, and absolutely loved it. The story is confusing and really doesnt make much sense, but it is still a landmark movie. Im not really an anime fan nowadays and i kinda miss when anime was still this edgy, cools as shit animation like it was in the mid 90's or so, before it got swamped with fanservice shit.

I don't know what the quality is like but both subbed and dubbed versions are streaming on Hulu.

Watch it again soon and relive your childhood.

Saw it when I was about 12 and it blew my mind. Didn't understand what the hell was going on but loved everything about it and it had a big impact on me.

I've been buying the graphic novels whenever i'm seen them going for cheap but i'm still missing one. Soon as I get the last one i'm going to try and get my head round the story, roughly 2 decades after first seeing it.

For anyone loving Akira, I highly recommend Tribute to Otomo artbook :

81Y3ue5BsLL.jpg

Its a collection of original arts by european, american and japanese artists, a tribute to Akira or Otomo's other works. Each page goes with its commentary of the artist to its relation to Otomo's work. Its amazing, and tons of super famous names in there.

Where can I find the original audio track. If I have to rip my Blu-ray and mux the OG stuff back in myself, I'll do it.

Included as a PCM 2.0 encoded track on the:

- Honneamise Blu-ray (US)
- Bandai Visual Blu-ray (Japan)
- Pioneer Blu-ray (Japan)
- Manga Blu-ray (UK) *On releases before 2016*

These 4 releases are basically identical (same language options, menu, etc.), though the Manga UK Blu-ray is region B locked instead of being region free.

The original theatrical track is absent on the Funimation, the Manga Blu-ray re-releases from 2016 onward and many overseas releases in non-English speaking territories.

Akira will always hold a special place. I remember when Sci-Fi Channel had the U.S. premiere on tv I recorded it on videotape and watched it on repeat. It wasn't until dvd was a thing I finally saw the non-edited version.

It's a masterpiece.

I watched it before reading the manga and ended up loving it even more when rewatching after reading the manga. Both are amazing.

It's been years since I've last seen it, which was back when I only had a monitor screen to watch on.

Now I have a projector and some good speakers so it's time to rewatch it in style on a 120+ inch screen.

That youtube link image shows that Akira predicted the Tokyo Olympics

indeed it is, they even got the year correct. But they were off by 2 regarding the number of the event itself... I guess they had to skip it twice due to the war (Tokyo 2020 are the 32nd not 30th Olympic games)

I'm probably gonna buy the bluray this week. Need to rewatch.

There's always the risk that they'll release a 4K bluray someday, but at the rate 4k anime is rolling out (it isn't) I should have quite a few years if not forever.

Damn, really? I'm sure pirates have provided these tracks somewhere? Would be nice to sync to my bluray when I rip it.

EDIT: ^ never mind I see the discussion above.

I liked it a lot better on my second watch this year but man, the most pivotal plot thread of the rivalry between Kaneda and Tetsuo, and Tetsuo's jealousy, felt extremely rushed.

I imagine that is much more fleshed out in the manga

I haven't seen in 25 years, when a friend and I rented it from Blockbuster. I was completely blown away.

It's still hard to believe it was a relative bomb when released.

I didn't read the later posts where they said it was actually available on older discs. Thought we were talking pure 30 year old bootleg territory there.

So of course I will hunt down an OOP disc instead..
You'd better. Post a photo of yourself holding the disc for proof or reported!!

Such a beautiful and surreal movie. It's one of my all-time favorites for sure. Probably a big reason why I've taken an interest in cyberpunk. I think I'm due for a rewatch.

I adore this film. It's completely overwhelming. The first time I saw it was in a theater and I'm so glad I got to experience it that way. The music and visuals completely blew me away. The cyberpunk world was captivating and the story, while completely insane, was engaging, though definitely the weakest link of the film. The influence of Akira cannot be understated.

first time i saw the movie was Channel 4 on a black and white CCTV monitor in the back of my dad's shop. We had closed up but the extractor system had failed and he was stuck repairing it till about 4am. Could of gone home with mum but i didn't want to miss a second.

Rare good memory from the childhood there.

Channel 4 in the UK had a great spree of anime movies around that time. Legend of the 4 Kings, Devilman, Violence Jack, Ninja Scroll etc.

I disagree on that one. The manga is one of the best comic books ever written and the movie is one of the best pieces of animation ever created. Both are masterpieces of their respective mediums.
Yeah at most you could criticize the story but otherwise they are pretty different and the film is so good it feels like you're being unfair if you just say it doesn't compare.
