Good List. What is it about music from when we were younger that sticks with us? Is it a wish to be that age again? Or is it that the music connected with us on a deeper level when you're younger? Either way, I find myself going down rabbit holes like this every now and again

I'll add a few, and stick to your one per band:

Greenday - Basket Case
Eve 6 - Inside Out
Harvey Danger - Flagpole Sitta
Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy
Everclear - Santa Monica
Blur - Park Life
Live - Lighting Crashes
Butthole Surfers - Peppa
Nada Surf - Popular
Garbage - I think I'm Paranoid

I would change the songs for so many of those artists, except the one hit wonders. And no NIN?!
Metallica? Tool?

Presidents of the USA - Lump
Primus - jerry was a race car driver
Beck - Loser
Arrested Development- Mr . Wendell
Three Non-Blonds - What's up?
Soundgarden - Black hole sun
Crash test dummies - Mmmmm (or however you spell it)
Weird Al - Amish Paradise

I came into the thread to suggest a Tool and NIN song until I saw more of the standard alt rock focus on the list, which is also fine and going for it's own thing. But hey, whynot;

Tool - Stinkfist
Tool - Prison Sex
NIN - Head Like a Hole (a year too early?)
NIN - Closer

More alt rock one hit wonders?;

Local H - Bound for the Floor

A few from my everyday playlist:

Alanis Morissette - Uninvited
Massive Attack - Teardrop ('90s song, but discovered in '00s from House)
Pixies - Where Is My Mind (released in 88, but popularized by Fight Club)
Nine Inch Nails - Hurt, Right Where It Belongs (this one is from '00s oops)
Radiohead - Talk Show Host

and generally a lot of Tool, NIN and Radiohead.

So, i was bored at work one day and decided to make the definitive 90's Alt Rock playlist. I used the Billboard Top 20 Alternative Rock charts and put in every song that appeared from 1-20 at some point in the 90's.

The embed on here only goes down to 100, but there are almost 1100 songs in the playlist. A few songs that should have been on there weren't on spotify though.

I could unload on this with more nu metal, alt metal, and rap suggestions, but the list seems to have a distinct vibe that these simply clash with. I hade a lot of suggestions but people have really hit the majority of the high notes.

REM seems to be the only obvious glaring omission up to this point in the thread.

Dude/Dudette this is amazing. Will have it on in the background tomorrow during work.

90s rock/alt is like my go to listening for a road trip or something in the background.

One Man Army by Our Lady Peace came out in 1999 so it makes the cut
You could go back farther, though, and pull like Superman's Dead or Naveed. Lots of good stuff to pick from pre-Gravity (to be fair, I didn't like Gravity so I haven't really heard anything from them since... though I am seeing they released Spiritual Machines 2? Interesting).

My personal deep cuts:

I feel no 90s Quintessential Alt Rock list can be complete without this one:

  • Mr. Henry - One

And this Goo Goo Dolls classic, which originally only appeared on the Batman & Robin (Music From and Inspired By The Motion Picture) album, until released on one of their collections, Volume 2 in 2008.

  • Goo Goo Dolls - Lazy Eye

This is an amazing thread that speaks to me greatly having been in high school in the later half of the 90s, so I gotta contribute. Most - if not all - of mine will be one hit wonders because I feel that was the majority of the music on the radio at that time. That said, some of the artists/groups had really decent to great albums outside of their one hit (K's Choice, Mansun, and Our Lady Peace have an amazing catalogue).

SuperDrag - Sucked Out
The Urge - Jump Right in
Artificial Joy Club - Sick & Beautiful
K's Choice - Not an Addict
Chalk Farm - Lie on Lie
The Dandy Warhols - Not if you were the Last Junkie on Earth
Eels - Novocaine for the Soul
Esthero - Heaven Sent
Forest for the Trees - Dream
Mansun - Wide Open Space
Morcheeba - Blindfold
Poe - Angry Johnny
Matchbox 20 - Long Day
Primitive Radio Gods - Standing Outside a Broken Phonebooth with Money In My Hand
Radio Iodine - Things I Do
Reacharound - Big Chair
Screaming Trees - Nearly Lost You
Sneaker Pimps - 6 Undergound
Our Lady Peace - Superman's Dead
Social Distortion - I Was Wrong
Space - Female of the Species
Huffamoose - Wait
Sponge - Wax Estatic
The Verve Pipe - Cup of Tea
White Town - Your Woman
Wild Colonials - Charm
Summercamp - Drawer
That Dog. - Never Say Never
Leah Andreone - It's Alright, It's Ok
Tracy Bonham - Mother Mother
Elastica - Connection
Geggy Tah - Whoever You Are
Ashley MacIsaac - Sleepy Maggie
Placebo - Pure Morning
Luscious Jackson - Ladyfingers
Dishwalla - Counting Blue Cars
Marcy Playground - Sex & Candy
Save Ferris - Come on Eileen
Black Lab - Wash it Away
Veruca Salt - Volcano Girls
Mundy - To You I Bestow
Republica - Ready to Go
Local H - Bound for the Floor
Cool for August - Don't Wanna Be Here

Sonic Youth - The Diamond Sea
Time takes its crazy toll.

My youngest daughter loves that song (as do I, and the entire album), and so I spent an hour showing her old clips of 90s rock on YT, starting with SY:

1. Sonic Youth - Bull in the Heather
2. Sonic Youth - Dirty Boots
3. Sonic Youth - Sugar Kane
4. Sonic Youth - Kool Thing
5. Breeders - Cannonball
6. Breeders - Safari
7. Breeders - Saints
8. Guided by Voices - Shocker in Gloomtown
9. Breeders - Shocker in Gloomtown
10. Smashing Pumpkins - Cherub Rock
11. Bikini Kill - Strawberry Julius

Also threw in

12. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps

but that's not a 90s track.

Ok. These songs I listed are the ones that take me back to the 90s. These are most populars because I will hear those on the radio/MTV/Mall/Car rides etc. So no deep cuts.

I also omitted bands like Tool/Rage/Soundgarden because even though I love those bands, their songs doesn't take me back to the 90s.

I did a little more compiling and for those with Apple Music, you can listen to the playlist here. The name of the playlist is in reference to the alt-rock station I listened to in high school. I assume I'll just keep updating this with more and more songs that come my way. But this is a good representation of what you'd here almost exclusively on the alt-rock stations in the mid to late 90s.
