I'm struggling to think of a media property that eventually got a prequel that didn't damage the existing fiction...

Star Wars prequels? Embarrassing.
You might have an argument for Rogue One...but certainly not the other films.

Harry Potter prequels? Just look what they're doing with Grindewald and Nagini...
